Someone please talk me out of buying this

Yeah sure thing. But the product here claims to be worth over 1k but reduced to 100. That's why it's shady. If it was just for sale at a low price that's fine. But clearly they are trying to set this up as a higher priced model.

Really though, don't buy shit from a dodgy website which makes no reference to who even made the item. The website seems to mostly sell hair straighteners

I'm not trying to suggest the price is too low for a drone. Its not.

Just this drone in particular is suspect.

Caveat emptor, always.

I take it for granted that anything selling for $100 is that price range, and the $1000 reference is for kids. Any adult knows that there is no business incentive to sell any $1,000 item for 10%.

But, your point is noted.

Using something like Paypal to pay is a good cover since they will back you if there is a sham.

I wanted one for a few minutes then I lost interest----average one's like this one usually go for $100----I was checking them out on Amazon.

What in the world would you use it for?

If nothing else, it’s fun to fly and learn ways to improve your piloting skills.

BTW, if it's range is 500 meters, why on earth would it need GPS? It's not like you can lose track of something only 1500 feet away.

This appears to be the main limitation that differentiates this drone from the more expensive versions – which can fly miles away. The one we have will maintain its GPS position, even in windy conditions. Another feature is that it will not allow you to accidentally operate in a no-fly zone, such as near an airport. I should note that FAA rules require you to keep the drone in visual contact at all times.

Before we got the drone, we bought a very inexpensive little helicopter that relied upon bluetooth to maintain control. The problem it had is that it frequently lost signal and would crash.

I finally got permission from my husband to buy a toy. Deal too good to pass up. $130 for a drone with gps, sensors that prevent it from flying into stuff, water proof, 4k camera, 4 batteries @ 25 minutes fly time each, fly home button, follow target, etc. I read reviews and people are saying good things about it. Free shipping, too. Hope this works out.

Allow me to talk you out of it. As I PM'd you or commented when you posted this, I bit and placed an order the week of the posting of your thread.

Gearfun is not surprisingly a total fraud.

I bought two drones, and spare parts, and extra batteries.

The company immediately confirmed the sale, sent emails, but at no point stated a promised delivery date. Finally after a month, I emailed the company and asked what the target would be. No response.

Finally, about six weeks after the order, a package appeared on my front porch, with two boxes inside, one damaged from being inadequately packaged. It was simply in a Tyvek envelope with two different sized boxes enclosed.

The return address was in California, but the shipment has originated in China.

Upon opening the boxes, the drones were much smaller than they appeared on the web site. Although, caveat emptor, the website never gave dimensions.

Additionally, the web site explicitly stated the camera was on a dual-axis gimbal, but it was in reality just a slide in bracket with no ability to move the camera in any manner from a fixed mount.

The camera was so cheaply made it looked like it was from a box of cereal.

The drones were not at all what was in the photographs on the web page. The propellers were flimsy and small whereas the pictures showed them capped with hubs.

There were several falsities in the sale. The advertisement claimed they were comparable to $1,000 models from other companies. They were not, nor did I believe that comparison when I bought them, but expected them to be in the value range of the purchase price, in the $100 range apiece.

In actuality, they were the cheapest ones made in the industry, along the lines of the toys sold for $10 at the dollar store at Christmas.

So, I immediately contacted the company, both to the email address they had contacted me from at the sale, and on the company's web site. Despite florid claims of responsiveness on their web page, nothing.

I placed a claim in Paypal for the full amount. Paypal requires the buyer to contact the seller and allows a three day response time. At the very end of three days, a form letter reply came via the seller expressing concern and asking for photographs of the items. The response completely ignored the statements made by me that they shipped an item they did not list on their web page. I stated as much to Paypal and opined that it might even be possible that the seller did not speak English.

Paypal contacted them once or twice, but never shared what responses they received if any. Paypal refunded my purchase in full the next day.

I have never heard back from the seller. I have two drones so cheap I cannot even use them as gifts.

Don't do it.

And Johnny was dead on. I knew it was possible, but I was willing to take a chance. I thought they were just cutting costs by marketing direct sales and not having the overhead of a store.

Thank you for taking the bullets for me.

I actually ended up ordering from another company. And yes, I'm fully aware that these are cheap drones. Here is the one I ended up ordering.

https://idearlife.com/collections/h...-remote-control-plane-small-uavfactory-outlet

The worst that could happen is I lose $130. Trust me, my dumbass has lost thousands over the years. I figured I could use this as an intro to drones.

I'm just going to say that IdearLife or DDRfun (they use one as the website and the other as the company name) appears to be another Spotify shell seller, which is what Gearfun was.

The website is slick, with great closeup pics of the drone and testimonials on the page. However, I don't find the company in the reviews where Gearfun had a 98% negative rating.

There are several pattern similarities between Gearfun and DDRfun, including how they arrange the page, the disclaimer that a battery extra cannot be ordered separately, and a general hype language.

The countdown clock for the sale is a new addition. I suspect the game is to keep reincorporating (if Spotify sellers are even incorporated at all) as new names and selling the same scam under new names to avoid reviews like those for Gearfun.

My guess is that your drone will arrive and be exactly the same misrepresented fraud, but it will be great if it is not. I just suspect you cannot buy the drone of that quality for $73.

An engineer at work is a young man who builds these as his hobby. He gave me the name of a local store that carries the parts as well as ready made models. I would recommend the same for you.

Aww, I didn't mean to scare you off, but there really was a similarity in the two sites.

This one looks like the real deal and should be at that price. I'd just find one where there is real feedback, either on Ebay, Amazon, or some website with reviews.

The description makes you wonder how developed the military grade ones have become.

Update on this. I sent an email to them asking to cancel the order. Apparently, they had already shipped it out by the time they got to my email.

I will test it out. It's only $130 regardless. If it turns out to be not worth it, I will go through paypal I guess. We'll see what happens.

I really did not expect this drone to be high quality at all. At best, it's a starter. We'll see what happens from here.
