Songs Worth Sharing

These words were written in another era but they could have been written yesterday.

Heaven help the child who never had a home
Heaven help the girl who walks the streets alone
Heaven help the roses if the bombs begin to fall
Heaven help us all,

Heaven help the Black man if he struggles one more day
Heaven help the white man if he turns his back away
Heaven help the man who kicks the man who has to crawl
Heaven help us all

Heaven help the boy who won't reach twenty-one
Heaven help the man who gave that boy a gun
Heaven help the people with their backs against the wall
Lord, Heaven help us all
Heaven help us all, yeah, oh, hurry

Now I lay me down before I go to sleep
In a troubled world, I pray the Lord to keep
Keep hatred from the mighty
And the mighty from the small
Heaven help us all

Well they say time waits for no one dear
And it takes near death to show one yeah
But time waited... for you and me

We know real love takes forever yeah
And the clock ticks faster every year
But time waited... for you and me

And if we don't watch out
(Time waited)
Yeah and if we don't watch out
Time will run off on us

But if we move right now
(Time waited)
All of the world is here for us
Ain't no spare time

And I did cry on your shoulder dear
At the thought of getting older yeah
But time waited... for you and me

And if we don't watch out
(Time waited)
Yeah and if we don't watch out
Time will run off on us

But if we move right now
(Time waited)
All of the world is here for us
Ain't no spare time

Time waits for no one
Well no one 'except you and me!
We've got forever dear
Take all the time you need!

And if we don't watch out
(Time waited)
Yeah and if we don't watch out
Time will run off on us

But if we move right now
(Time waited)
All of the world is here for us
Ain't no spare time

And if we don't watch out
(Time waited)
Yeah and if we don't watch out
Time will run off on us

But if we move right now
(Time waited)
All of the world is here for us
Ain't no spare time

Lyrics

It's the same kind of story
That seems to come down from long ago
Two friends having coffee together
When something flies by their window
It might be out on that lawn
Which is wide, at least half of a playing field
Because there's no explaining what your imagination
Can make you see and feel
Seems like a dream
They got me hypnotized
Now it's not a meaningless question
To ask if they've been and gone
I remember a talk about North Carolina
And a strange, strange pond
You see the sides were like glass
In the thick of a forest without a road
And if any man's hand ever made that land
Then I think it would've showed
That's why it seems like a dream
Got me hypnotized
And I know that's right
Seems like a dream
They got me hypnotized
They say there's a place down in Mexico
Where a man can fly over mountains and hills
And he don't need an airplane or some kind of engine
And he never will
Now you know it's a meaningless question
To ask if those stories are right
'Cause what matters most is the feeling
You get when you're hypnotized
Seems like a dream
They got me hypnotized
Seems like a dream
They got me hypnotized
Seems like a dream
They got me hypnotized
Got me hypnotized

Here is a time capsule from 1972. "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" by Gil Scott-Heron did a riff on then-current commercials, celebrities, and news/entertainment topics. Give this a listen, and see how many references you can get.

Don't know why but I am weeping with this one today.

This song struck a cord today. I was driving to NH and this song came on. The lyrics, I take in a different way.

Bob Seger has a way of making songs that hit me in a profound way. In "Sunburst" he powerfully describes the stage presence of a rock singer, and how he whips up the concert crowd into a frenzy. Notice how he creates the mood with aggressive lyrics and invoking the specter of the Roman Colosseum.
