Sorry laptop users

Of course I think it's rude to monopolize a table at a coffee shop for hours when you are not a paying customer--but that goes for people sitting there reading books, magazines, and teachers correcting papers as well! If internet users are evicted, or charged by the minute for their seats, everybody should be: the book club participants, the knitters, the, talkers. They should all have to feed a "parking meter." It's not fair to single out the internet users as "loiterers" and undesirable "deadbeats." And while we are at it, let's banish forever this fantasy of universal connectivity and the "information superhighway" because it really doesn't exit. If you are not at home or at school, WiFi availability is not what it used to be. You might as well write a letter.

ugggggh, you need to read a forum or something.

you can get wifi anywhere. You can buy a mifi card, slip it into your pocket and have wifi anywhere you want it.

Or buy a EVDO card, plop it into your computer, and WiFi anywhere.

Or have a smartphone, and use the internet on your phone anywhere.

Hell, if you need some info right now, you can call google, KGB, or that other call in service.

wait, the Russian Secret Service is involved? Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti) >>>> wtf?

Evidentally you're not aware of the requirements some users have for connectivity.

In order to remotely connect to my desktop at work, and complete necessary tasks I require the full functionality of a laptop. A smartphone will not do. Ditto for school assignments.

You cannot get WiFi everywhere.

And I am aware of the expense and technical glitches associated with EVDO and MIFI. With a monthly communcations bill over $300 for my various devices and subscription services, I'm not looking to add to that expense.

I just think it's fantastical for people to keep talking about "Internet everywhere, all the time" when that is clearly not the case unless one is willing to resort to exotic, expensive (sometimes unreliable) work-arounds.

When that fabled era arrives I will welcome it with open arms, but it's not here yet.

there is a cell service called KGB where you can text them questions, and they text you back the answer. i think you have to pay a charge for KGB, but there is another service called Cha Cha that is free. they text you advertisements with the answer.

to text cha cha, text the numeric symbols for cha cha

then thats when you get a netbook. it is light, small, cheap, and has enough room to have certain programs. but if you prefer just living in the cloud, you can find a service for anything online. Including a word processor.

there aren't many glitches with evdo and mifi. EVDO essentially runs off of 3G, soon 4G and depending on the carrier you use, your connection will be awesome, or not some awesome (possibly bumped to Edge)

and you're bill isn't really common for most people. Most people pay probably 100 dollars for all the fixings. Hell, tack it on to your cell bill, and a normal person is paying...what? $120?

Not to mention, all the open wifi spots from peoples home connection. Where I live, I can walk a short ways, and there are two open connections i can tack on to if I want. And if I don't have internet in my home, I do go piggyback.

Internet everywhere isn't far off for anyone. Eventually (if they havent already) they will simply build 3G/4G into computers big and small, and if you want, just activate it. With mifi, it is simply putting the mifi card in your pocket and letting it do it's work.

Not to mention with things like the iPhone, if you are willing, you can do anything you want on it. People have been checking and writing email forever on their phones, and now they can do all types of new shit.
