so here's the thing - I like raw spinach leaves - actually prefer them over lettuce for a salad - and I like florentine dishes - rice florentine - chicken florentine - etc. HOWEVER I can't stand eating cooked spinach straight up - just gross - is that weird?

It's not weird at all. I like raw cabbage in salads, but don't particularly care for it cooked.

Love it just wilted in a saute pan with a little fresh garlic and crushed red pepper.

Or some good chicken stock with tortellini. Throw in a big handful of baby spinach.

Love a wilted spinach salad with a sweet and sour dressing with bacon and hard boiled egg wedges.

Throw a nice dollop of mayonnaise on cooked spinach. It completely changes the taste, and makes it a lot more palatable.

I absolutely hate mayo as well :vomit:

once the spinach is soggy it's just a nasty mess

I am happy to eat spinach combined with other stuff but alone

I’m the same way: I eat salads daily, and I use spinach and chard in place of lettuce. I love Florentine dishes, especially Eggs Florentine (exactly like Eggs Benedict, but with sautéed spinach in place of ham). But plain cooked spinach is gross to me. I think what this stems from is when I was a little kid my mother would make me eat spinach the way she cooked it: finely shredded, and cooked so it came out in a lump like mashed potatoes. Not only did it look nasty, it tasted vile. It looked like baby food, except she would eat it, as would my father. I was too young to pay attention as to how she prepared it, and what she added to it, but I always refused to eat it. Even the dog refused to eat it. Throughout my teens I refused to eat anything that had spinach in it because I hated the taste. But once I tried it in salads and in other cooked dishes (where it wasn’t shredded into a gross blob) I loved it. There’s even a psychedelic rock band from the late 60’s called “Ultimate Spinach” that I love.

As a child I was told to "eat your greens" which meant the same inedible dark green blob that you describe. I used to think that was spinach but in fact it was the leaves from turnips or beetroots. Does anyone still eat those? I put spinach in salads but it doesn't seem to me to have a flavour, I only throw it in because it has a reputation for being healthy. I've tried cooking it but it just turns to a wet slop.

Here's a song about spinach. At least I think that's what it's about

I like it in my morning shake which is 3/4 fruit and 1/4 veggies blended BUT I prefer kale which I couldn't eat for a long time (blood thinners) but now I can.

I think spinach is gross and nasty in any other setting.

Ive been getting better with it I still don't like straight up frozen that shit needs hollandaise and cracked pepper

Spinach the real Soylent Green...

love it in many variations - best: sauté stile with garlick

would never eat it from a can :##:

btw. remember the movie Soylent Green plays in the year 2022...

I :luv2: spinach! I buy it fresh in the bag and steam it or eat it raw in salads. Steaming it is so easy and just takes a few minutes and is delicious with just salt, pepper and butter. I imagine canned spinach is gross though...never tried it and doubt I ever will.

Not weird at all.

Love a spinach salad and pissed that for us it was not a great crop this year.

For cooked leaves, I prefer Chard or Collards.

In the Northeast US the spinach has been great this year, even with the heat waves. I alway try to buy fresh bunched spinach. Never canned or frozen. Pre-bagged only if it's all I can find, but only some brands are trustworthy.

I love it cooked. It has a hearty, almost meaty flavor.

For those who don't like it that way, it's easy to sneak into a lot of things; just chop it up finely. The nice thing about it is that it reduces when cooked.

It's good raw too. Some of its nutrients are fat soluble so make sure you eat a little fat with it.

This is why I am so disappointed.

But the Chard has been incredible and the Kale as well, so we should have lots of that lovely smokey, meaty flavour in our frozen leaves for the fall and winter.
