I used to play volleyball and badminton, but have since moved and never got around to finding a new place to play.
Been a season ticket holder to the Colorado Mammoth indoor lacrosse team since they moved to town in 2001. Why? Here's a couple things that happened at last night's game.
* Met up with friends early, grabbed some food, and chatted about the upcoming game (it was supposed to be an easy win for our team, and luckily, it was).
* Settled into our seats. We're near a corner, although a bit more along the long side, about halfway up. From there, we're close enough to see things close-up, high up enough to get a good vantage point of the entire field, and get a good view of one of the goals.
* Said hello to all the other regulars in our section.
* Watched Mammoth captain Gavin Prout outwit all FIVE defenders on one play and score a goal unassisted.
* Saw Mammoth goalie Gee Nash make more than his share of amazing saves, including a diving save with his back to the guy shooting the ball.
* Went nuts when forward Nenid Gajic dove into the crease as he shot the ball, scored a goal, then got punched three times by the opposing goalie...then went even MORE nuts as the goal was disallowed and Gajic was sent to the penalty box for interfering with the goalie!
* Joined the other 17,000 fans in yelling "GET IN THE BOX!" when an opposing player was sent to the penalty box.
* Had my bloodlust stirred up when the players threw their gloves off and began mixing it up near our side of the field.
* Cheered like crazy when the game finished, with the Mammoth 16-7 victors.
* Made our way down to the bar inside the venue after the game and got a good table.
* Had a couple drinks, and did some people watching for the first 20 minutes or so, waiting for the players to show up. They always come out for an hour or so, dressed in nice suits, to have some drinks, sign autographs, and chat with the fans.
* Called over Dan Stroup when he showed up. He played with the Mammoth for the previous three seasons, but he was picked during the expansion draft and traded to Edmonton in the offseason. We welcomed him back, which he seemed touched to hear, and we congratulated him on getting his championship ring from last year (finally). He pulled it out of his pocket and handed it to us to look over. Even let us try it on. Damn thing is huge and weighs a ton.
* Joked with the general manager/president about his pre-game speech (where he gave the championship rings to former players Stroup and Chris Gill). Long story about that which isn't worth relating...
* Got to chat with Gavin Prout for quite a bit. He recognizes us as "that gay couple with the two women" (we usually sit with two female friends). Talked with Gavin Prout about a variety of things, including asking after their strength/conditioning guy, who was rushed to the hospital last week with a life-threatening condition. He's OK now - in fact, he was at the game! He also seemed surprised to find out that everyone at the table thought he was cute, although I played it off by saying, "Enh - you're average."
(Actually, he's better than that, methinks...)
* Got to chat briefly with almost every other player we wanted to. Brian Langtry was notably absent. All the players chat with you if you want. Gee Nash obviously is uncomfortable with the "fandom" that he's earned, so we tend not to talk to him much.
* This didn't happen last night, but it could've. Someone led a kid up to Brian Langtry, and it was pretty apparent that this kid was "special needs" of some sort. The kid said, "Hi, Brian. I'm John Smith (or whatever his name was)." Brian's eyes lit up and he said, "Hi, John! I got your e-mail! I'm sorry I haven't written back to you, but I've been really busy. I'll make sure to write back to you this week, OK?" Then he signed the kid's jersey. You ever hear any other players doing this sort of thing?
* Besides, how can you not like a sport where there's at least three "crease violations" every game?

Some of these players are quite easy on the eyes, and really cool guys, to boot. They can violate my crease anytime.

* Cost for this night of fun? Tickets are $25. Food was typically high, but not insane - maybe $9 or so.
Geez, how could you NOT like this?
