star wars is all pretty pictures, nice explosions and magic. don't get me wrong, it's nice escapism; but that's all it is.

i actually love them both. i agree with gl that when SW first came out...i was young but i was RIGHT there and that molded me into the scifi nerd i am today. i think though...that ST had the larger social implications, so i voted trek.

james doohan made it for the first movie

okrand fleshed it out later when it was decided that they would be used extensively

on the language thing... if you read the vulcan high priestess's lips in the first movie, you can see that she was originally speaking english and made up vulcan words were dubbed over it to make it seem more realistic

Too bad TMP was so boring. It was very nostalgic when it came out but the script lacked the essentials of a good episode of the original series. Which was interplay between the characters and Kirk boldly facing a supposedly unbeatable enemy.

This they remedied in The Wrath of Khan.

well did you know that he considred the original release to be the unedited unfinished version? he almost didnt make it to the release date and the ditributors wouldnt let him delay. he re released the film just about five years before his death.

it is a much faster paced film

i think it may not have been until TNG, but i cant really remember exactly

Anakin and Padme's conversation in the field is an example of political justification for the grab of dictatorial powers as well

which was an important american concern when it was written

I grew up reading Robert Heinlein's "boy's novels" when I was in grade and high school. They were written for teenage boys and included:

Rocket Ship Galileo,
Space Cadet,
Red Planet,
Farmer in the Sky,
Starman Jones,
The Star Beast,
Tunnel in the Sky,
Citizen of the Galaxy,
and Starship Troopers.

Star Wars is very much in the Heinlein action packed good guy, bad guy, hero and damsel in distress in another galaxy strain. So its wonderful for combining all of those elements that make a story exciting and interesting and placing it in a much larger universe.

I also loved that finally space ships were dirty and broke down and that science fiction had moved beyond clean white rooms.

and the film did not do the book justice

it was originally written for savik... neither kirstie alley nor robin curtis would reprise the role... it was decided that recasting the same roll three times would annoy the fanbase and so they renamed the character valeris

this explains the opening sequence when valleris quotes starfleet regulations and the bridge crews amused response.... it was a tie in from the star trek two script in which savik was told by kirk to keep on quoting regulations

it also explains valeris and spocks bonding ritual in star trek six... which was of course a tie in to star trek three

it also made her betrayal infer spocks belief that vulcans are better more complicit in the racism theme
