i just got back from watching star trek...

holy shit! i loved it!

has anyone else seen it? thoughts?

Re: **star Trek**

Saw it last night. I liked it a lot, but I would have liked more characterization as opposed to action and comedy scenes. Still, a good reboot for the franchise, love Nimoy, and great eye candy.

But I did think, "WTF is Winona Ryder doing in here????"

i suspect the purists will bitch about deviation from cannon but whatev.

i'm geekier than most and probably know more trek cannon than i should (i read the star trek encyclopedia for fun) and i totally bought it. it all worked for me. in fact, it rocked my constitution class star ship! :square:

i see it tomorrow morning at 10 am. we're going at 8:30 just in case it's busy. hope i don't have to stand in line that long.

i think you are right GL the purists will likely bitch. as they did with enterprise. but i'm ok with scifi just being good scifi it doesn't have to match everything from every episode before.

I thought they did a great job of leaving themselves an out with why things might be different moving forward, yet still respecting the history of the characters and their relationships.

And how did you like Pine's underwear scene? :)

yay! i think you'll like it! i can sort of see how the purists might get upset and all but you know what? the concept did need a reboot imho. it worked for bond...

uh... i had to fight the urge to spank my captain's log right there in the theater! :D

I know, right? If Shatner had worn those when I saw the original series way back in the day, I'm ashamed to say I would have started spanking it even earlier than I did.

I agree. It's clear that the screenwriters knew their Trek, otherwise the movie wouldn't have been overflowing with subtle inside references. I loved every second of it, and really think that JJ Abrams has made a Trek that everyone is going to love, not just the purists (who, no offence, will probably be mostly dead from old age soon).

And how did you like Pine's underwear scene? :)

Holy hell, speaking of overflowing. *|*My geeky disappointment that his underwear weren't blue lasted only as long as it took for him to get to his knees and then-- Well, I didn't have enough blood running through my brain to think about it.

i really wanna see this film, but i know nothing of star trek. well i hope the movie doesnt leave me as too much of an outsider

While it would help to know something about it, you can easily walk into this movie knowing nothing about Star Trek and still enjoy it. Maybe even more.

wow, im really looking forward to seeing it now. that was the only thing i dreaded about watching the movie, was that i wouldnt know much bout star trek.

You might feel a little lost at first, Raf, because it seems like things are happening that you need backstory for, but it actually just hasn't revealed what's going on yet.

My buddy knew very little about star trek going in, and and he kept asking me, "Am I missing something I should have known about already?" By the end though, it all made sense for him, and he left really liking it.

well im kinda expecting to be somewhat confused, being that im not a trekkie. so does the story take place in the original star trek series, cuz i noticed it has most of the star trek characters from the original series.

The answer to that would be "wait and see."

:)

I am going to try and go today after work. A friend of mine went last night and he said it was very good.

i saw it this morning. it was very very good. the characters are similar to what they were historically but different enough for this to be very much a revitalized star trek.

personally i don't think you need to know anything about trek to enjoy the movie. there are "inside" things that you wont get, but not being a trek person i don't think you'll even notice them, let alone be confused that you don't get it. i think most folks seeing this will be very happy with it.

I will never claim to be a trek purist, but I do have something to complain about. I'm putting it in a SPOILER frame for those that haven't seen it yet.

My beef is similar but more substantial.

I thought the film itself was good but I really didn't like that they essentially invalidated all the rest of Trek with it. Spock's mother was nothing. They completely destroyed Vulcan and had Kirk and Spock meet way before they would have otherwise. With that, the whole future would have been totally different, and plenty (if not all) of the stuff in the other movies/series would never have happened.

I wouldn't have minded if it was just like Enterprise where they made some minor changes but didn't completely alter the entire universe. Still, as a film it was good and I'm sure it will be successful.

In one Trek film Kirk dies. In this Trek film we learn that Spock...
[this is partly directed to agaymale's objection...think about the whole theme...it's broadly audacious]

now you got me all excited to see this film. who know, maybe ill become a star trek nerd after seeing the film, lol.

Have you been following Lost? If you have, your brain won't have much trouble following this. Well, a little...kinda like with Lost but a bit less convoluted, to be sure.

Adding to what others have said: Mr. Abrams has done an honorable job here.
