My friend convinced me to get a gym membership, and after I got it I went five days the first week and worked myself hard. I didn't really know what I was doing, but I just slowly figured out more and more machines and used decent amounts of weights with lots of reps (versus high weight /w low reps).

Anyway, after the first week I got really sick and it's been almost two weeks. I still have a mild sore throat and cough. How long should I wait before I go back to the gym? (when I get sick I usually end up with a lingering cough for a good month afterward)

I had signed up for five sessions with a trainer, but when I got sick I canceled all my sessions until I got better. Now I am getting really antsy to get back to the gym. I had only been going for a week but I was already feeling some progress--but I don't want to make myself sick again. Any advice?

Also, is it possible I got sick from the gym? Contaminated machines, or working myself too hard?

I would go back immediately, but with a much reduced program, concentrating on light aerobic machines. The idea is to get your blood circulating, but without tiring yourself. It'll make you feel better and get help to get you back to health quicker. The key is to not exaggerate.

Well you shouldn't be going 5 days a week right when ya start. You have to ease yourself into going to the gym. It will be a shock to your body if you go from 0 to 100 right away. I'd say only do actual weight lifting 2x a week and throw in a few extra days of cario if ya want, to begin with. Once you've done a bit of that you can slowly but surely start upping the amount of days a week you actually lift weights on.

Also, maybe ya just caught a cold or the flu? It is that time of the year. ;)

It's winter in the US- cold and flu season. You could have picked up a bug anywhere- not necessarily the gym.

You can return to the gym as soon as you feel up to it. If you're still a little under the weather, then call and reschedule your training sessions after the holidays.

Definitely do the trainer sessions. It will help you feel more organized and less unsure of yourself when you're at the gym.

And good luck with your workouts.

Well, getting a membership for the gym is one of the greatest resolutions you can make for yourself in 2009. but considering that you have a trainer and falling sick and going to the gym for 5 days a week...hmmm didn't your trainer warn you about overtraining?

Don't you have a trainer in this gym who can tell you how you should train?
Have a look at this book: www thenewrulesoflifting com
I read it and the ideas are kind of cool and it definitely works. They present different workouts for different goals and also explain how you can change the programs according to your needs and taste.

Thanks for the tips guys :) Just got back from the gym for the first time in two weeks. Felt great! I did some leg workouts and then some cardio (but took it easy on the cardio). Now I am going to get a full nights sleep and stick to three times a week for the gym until I feel 100%

Also got back in contact with my trainer and we are gonna reschedule our appointments tomorrow.

Wish me luck!

Dude same thing happened to me i worked myself too hard too fast and was sick for 2 months!!!

I sugest just start with 30 min on the tread mill for the first 4 weeks increasing the pace/incline as u advance in the weeks, it will get u in the routine of going to the gym and increase ur fitness level evenly and steadily :D

Yea, there are a lot of sick people nowadays due to flu season. Try not to touch your face with your hands (like to wipe off sweat, etc.) or anything after touching machines and wash your hands after using the machines. Use hand sanitizer, etc etc. You don't know where people's hands have been... lol I'm kind of a germaphobe. But yea, keep working hard and good luck.

also be sure you're well hydrated, meaning drink plenty of fluids - a good workout can seriously dehydrate you

when you're dehydrated your immune system is compromised so it makes it easier to get sick

that may be part of the reason you got sick after a few days of working out - you weren't sufficiently replenishing your fluids after your workouts & the effect was compounding itself

satisfying your thirst does not mean you're sufficiently hydrated - if you feel thirsty, take a drink & then don't feel thirsty any more, you still may be a long way from sufficient hydration

a rule of thumb I learned long ago that if you amp up your workout but you piss less, you're not rehydrating sufficiently - drink enough fluids so your urine output remains constant

Just remembered something, if you're going to gym, you'd get more energy if you don't jack off the night before.
