Stop Online Piracy Act

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet. Help fight for a free and open

I just read about this not even three minutes ago.

They're only doing this because they got some fatass checks from all of these movie studios. These congressprostitutes are ruining our fucking country.

America: home of the bought and paid for legislature.

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

Someone needs to censor Congress!

And what do you mean RUINING? We are already there....

Oh boy... just when you think they couldn't possibly come up with something worse.

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

"piracy" of movies and music : shouldn't an object that costs nothing to produce and distribute be of very small ( = nothing , really ) value ? and the point made perhaps as a joke but still very truthful : to all the owners of movies and music : if people don't want your stuff even for free then you ought to be worried .

Well said!!

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

Time to find a good, non-US based proxy I guess...

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

The problem in USA is that you need money and someone to sponsor you to even become a senator. This is a huge problem, because most often the sponsors often get their way with laws too, like this one. The republican asshole behind this is obviously bought and paid, and now the whole country will pay for it. The big corporations have too much power in USA, they even affect the lawmaking.

Also.. to the guy over here saying you will now use a proxy.. well, do you even NEED a proxy when sites like this and many other social networking sites are gone? because that will happen for sure with this new law. ANY infringement whatsoever on a website, and the whole website will be shut down. You might as well say goodbye to all your favorite websites right now.

It's not even about piracy.. it's about censorship, violating human rights, and most importantly, violating free speech. We need this spin on it to make it go away. We need people to see the bigger picture. We can STILL stop it! Please voice your opinion and spread the word, it is not too late yet! Sign the petitions and make everyone aware of this. Help stop this ludicrous bill.

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

Should be made illegal to receive money from "interest groups".

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

Oh please.

the only sites that need to worry are sites that deal in pirated content. BlogSpot has thumbed their noses at movie and music producers and let pirate bloggers post links to their content, File Sharing services openly allow people to make money off the content they link to.

Sites like ItsAllGay have made millions of dollars by charging people to see content they didn't produce. Nobody has given a shit and every time anyone in the industry has tried to stand up to it, people have shouted them down.

I know that when I've posted negative stuff about piracy, many people here have told me I'm stupid for thinking the industry would ever be able to stop piracy and we shouldn't try.

Well, since the public were so happy to keep downloading content they didn't pay for... this is where we have gone. I don't think we'll have to worry about free speech being stopped. Unless your idea of free speech is "come to my blog and download pirated files."

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

I've been in the creative arts for a long time. I try to make a few bucks now and again on my efforts and, yes, sometimes I do worry about my copyrighted, published work being hi-jacked by others who may profit from it.

I could support legislation to stop the piracy from happening, but not this Bill. Here's where they lose my vote:

Per the Washington Post article referenced above: "The bill also includes provision that could hold third parties — payment-processing and other partners — responsible for piracy and counterfeiting on other sites, some critics say."

Punishing a website (such as JUB, or any other third party Hosting site) is wrong. If you can't find the actual perpetrator, keep on looking; don't take it out on any unwitting 3rd party. They don't have the staff, the money, or the time to be checking every little piece of content uploaded by 6 billion people.

Consider me Signed.

That, of course, is a very good point and most likely something that will have to be addressed. HOWEVER...

Blogspot is very aware that the majority of it's users are just people sharking links to pirated porn, movies, music and games and do nothing to stop it. The digital locker companies encourage it. They're not innocent 3rd parties.

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

Agreed Congress is a whore for the highest bidder, unlike ALL the parliaments of other countries who never kowtow to moneyed interests. Riiiiiight!

Also agree that stealing copyrighted material should be stoppable.

The internet has bred a sense of entitlement because of early-on anonymity and slacker ethics. Grow a pair, and pay for your entertainment. There is plenty of free content without stealing stuff.

'Everyone is doing it' is a really poor reason for being a whore. ;)

That being said, I agree with everything else you've said.

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

this is just another reason why i think we as a country are going to drown in corporate greed. thats it! I'm fleeing to Canada of the UK... but i don't like cold... Mexico then... but thats too hot... fuck it, i will stay in Florida...

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

Spot on! This is the main point - for now; more on which later.

The sheeple think the whole interwebz will be turned-off. FFS, just look at tumblr - the kiddies think the world will end.

Whilst it will only initially be used for infringing websites, the precedent that's set is unsettling.

I fear, though, that should this legislation pass, the reach will extend to other sites of questionable content.

Take a gander at the TSA. They're now patrolling bus stops and what not. I'm sure it's only a start.

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

^ I was speaking to what I observed - the knee-jerk ZOMG of the unwashed masses. Those, for the most part, who are TL;DR kinda people. THey hear a snippet of what's going on and run with it.
