Do you prefer to go to the supermarket for your food or order it online?

I prefer going to the supermarket, I like walking around with a trolley and spending hours reading the back of everything.

When there is nobody around I still do that thing where you jump on the trolley and ride along really fast !oops!!oops!!oops!

The online thing is not that popular here yet, even if it was I would still go to the store. I like to pick out my purchases and see what's on sale.

The only thing I like to buy online is DVDs and stuff like that.

I know of only one store in Peterborough which does that. It's a smallish grocery store and, for many decades, would take telephone orders, pick up the groceries, and deliver them. It was a great service for shut-ins and people who had difficulty getting around and doing things like grocery shopping.

With the internet, they have expanded that service to online shopping:

Supermarket. I love to check out all the people. I am just a people person I guess

While it would be convenient to have my groceries delivered, I like to wander around and see what's on sale. I don't think any of the supermarkets around here deliver, anyway.

I do have a disabled friend in England who gets her groceries delivered, and it works very well for her.

I think most of you are American or Canadian. I guess most places don't deliver in those countries... All the big stores round here deliver:confused: All the ones I would shop at anyway.

I insist on going to the supermarket. This way I can be sure of getting the freshest looking vegetables and fruits. I can also double check the expiration dates of the food that I am getting. The Stop and Shop by my house just started this service - thanks, but no thanks - I want to see the food that I am buying.

I had my groceries delivered a couple times because I had coupons for free delivery. It's convenient if you don't have a car and you want to buy a lot of stuff. Online they might have a few things that I know my local store doesn't have, but there are other things that I can't get online either. That's the case with a lot of grocery stores. You have to go to different places around town to pick up everything on your list. Since I'm already running around town, I might as well make stops at the big chains instead of having them deliver stuff. Delivery can also be a hassle in itself because you have to be at home to accept it and it can be like waiting for the cable guy.

About the only thing that gets delivered around here is booze from the local 'Dial-a-Bottle'. It's a private delivery guy who'll drive to the local beer/liquor store, pick up your desired potent potable, and deliver it right to your door. . . for a fee, of course.

What is the English version of a grocery store?

Around here we have the big supermarkets that sell everything, all of them deliver.
We also have little stores that sell just the basic stuff (simple foods like bread and milk, cleaning products, fruit and vegetables, dirnks, sweets...) which don't deliver as they take like 2 minutes to walk to and there are about 10 of them.

In America, some of the big chain supermarkets allow you to shop online and deliver, but it depends on the area in which you live whether or not it's available. There are also smaller chain and family run or boutique or ethnic grocery stores that usually don't deliver. In some smaller towns or very dense cities, a smaller grocery store might offer delivery after you order over the phone or by mail.

i would much rather go to the market, i enjoy the experience. i like to see what is fresh, on sale and i check out the guys too.

Sometimes i'm fearful of the future and how lazy people are going to get with the internet being able to do everything for them.

I like going to the grocery store, and I have to look at my fruits and veggies before I buy them.
I sometimes order t-shirts online.

It is more efficient though. It is better for one van to drive to 50 homes then back to the store than for 50 people to drive to the store and then drive back home.

My Mum was always really embarrassing when buying fruit and veggies, should we lift all the boxes up to get to the newest ones. It was funny that one time when apples went flying everywhere though

A lot of people do that where I'm from. I think it's more embarrassing to pick the crappy top fruits/veggies with blemmishes and welts that everyone else tossed aside.

If ordering online was available in my area I would use it. I can't stand going to the grocery store.

Several years ago there was a company here called 'Webvan' that delivered. I ordered from them a few times. Amazingly the produce was fresher than anything found in the grocery stores. I think they tried to expand a little too fast and in a flash they were out of business.

When I lived in S.Florida, Publix started a delivery division called Publix Direct. It had horrible management (I had a friend working for them) and they only lasted a little over a year.
