Survivor 21: Nicaragua

^^ Also white people bond with other white people and form alliances of only white people (based on common backgrounds etc) and then vote for white people to win all the time on Survivor and Big Brother. Just because they don't explicitly say, "We want white people till the end" doesn't mean it's not happening. And anyone who has a problem with minority groups coalescing in response to that so as not to get picked off by the (unintentional) racism of dominant culture dynamics, should also be complaining when white people on these shows do the same shit ever so often. Hello? Shannon was forming an alliance with Chase, Fabio, Benry, Alina and One-Leg. Do you see a black, brown or yellow face in there? Did anyone complain about that??

Hell, fans often cheer on these "likable" all-white alliances. I'll never forget how vicious some fans were about about Kenny/Crystal/Susie on Gabob, even though those three pulled off some awesome blindsides. Instead, these fans were upset about the pretty white alliance being picked off, and they never questioned why Marcus/Charlie/Corinne/Bob/Randy stuck together very cliquishly. What could those five people possibly have in common? Hmm, let me think.

If you're only complaining about it when people of color do it, then that says way more about you than them.

I really didn't like Crystal or Susie, it had nothing to do with their race. I hated Corrine and Randy was less than stellar. As far as Big Brother goes, I'd love some more minority representation, but I don't remember alliances that excluded people by race. By the virtue of the games themselves there are more likely to be all white alliances because there are more white people in the game.

I don't think people go into alliances generally and make it about race. James and Amanda, the girls alliance on Micronesia, Taj and Stephen, were all alliances among whites and non-whites. I think that's why I was surprised that Sash brought it up.

^I agree with you totally. Can you believe it?

I also agree that i dont think it is always intentional. Like you said they just bonded culturally and pick off people outside their alliance. Those people often end up being the minorities.

But in Shannon's case there was nothing unintentional about it. He was just full of hate. Sexist, homophobic and it was only a matter of time before he showed himself to be racist as well just to complete the trifecta.

But that season with Crystal/Kenny/Susie was infuriating. The castaways who were eliminated were so completely awful. They weren't just upset they were out of the game but they clearly couldnt handle that the minorities had dared to form an alliance and make moves against them. the way they treated Crystal at the Ponderosa was just disgusting.

Oh totally. And not only were they outplayed, but Marcus/Corrinne/Randy in particular were entitled jerks, yet they were the good team? Please.

Bottom line is, there are WAY more examples of white and white only alliances in Survivor history and I've never heard anyone on this board accuse them of being racist.

Oh wow! I'd never heard that before about Crystal. What did they do to her?

Again, that's because there are more white people. If it was a season full of mostly Latino (or Black or Asia or gay) people, the same thing would happen.

Yea but that's a bad example because in the end JT and Stephen chose to eliminate Taj before Erinn even though they didnt have to. Stephen was Taj's alliance partner long before JT. She even let him hold onto the immunity idol she found. But he throws her under the bus because he says she is a bigger threat for votes and challenges? Is he high? JT was easily a bigger threat for Stephen winning than Taj. Stephen got zero votes in the end when he lost to JT.

Have you ever seen a reality competition where there are more black/latino/asian/gay people than anything else? it doesn't happen.

I think Stephen just underestimated JT, which was stupid and cost him the game. He had always been closer to JT, but I think it's because he thought he could beat JT in the end. I don't remember the season well enough to say if he could have beaten Taj.

What about that Omarosa show on BET? Regardless, the point was simply that it doesn't matter what the race is, majority groups have a higher likelihood of forming exclusive groups due to their numbers.

Just when we thought our pretty little princess Shannon couldnt any more adorable. Read this sweet E! interview:

http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b201998_survivor_nicaragua_eliminee_on_gay.html

He actually proves he's not sexist by saying he would vote for Palin for President.

And he thinks Parvati is hotter than Brenda. Is he nuts? Parvati despite believing she's super hot is average at best. Brenda is a gorgeous exotic beauty. But then again I wouldnt imagine Shannon would have diverse taste.

Brenda is hotter than Parvati by a long shot. She's the hottest girl on the show, I think. Although Yve isn't bad either.

That omarosa show is a horrible example. It's a dating show. Obviously she is a black woman who dates black men.

And Sgt Pepper and I both said that it is often unintentional. But the outcome is the same. the white people often wind up in an all white alliance and pick off all the minorities. They don't openly say "Hey let's make an alliance and exclude all the minorities!" They just make alliances that often exclude all the minorities.

All Sash did was acknowledge that this often happens and took steps for the minorities to empower themselves instead of allowing the dominant majority group to annihilate them. There is NOTHING wrong with that.

I guess I'm just not as observant when it comes to race on reality TV shows. I'd value personality over physical characteristics when it comes to alliances. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be in an alliance with Nanonka. And if I realized how crafty Brenda was, I wouldn't go near her either.

The way it was shown made it sound like race was the only reason why they got together, which I think is bad gameplay if it's true.

Oh wow! I'd never heard that before about Crystal. What did they do to her?
When Crystal got to Ponderosa on her season Corinne, Marcus, Charlie, and Randy completely ignored her for days. They were so smug and unapologetic about it. They thought it was so cute and funny. The only person that felt bad about it was Charlie. prolly b/c he is gay and knows being an outcast isn't fun. But he gets no points b/c he still went along with it like a sheep b/c he didnt want to go against his boyfriend marcus.

Crystal was obnoxious and those guys were already jerks, so I guess I shouldn't have been shocked.

Minority or not, who in hell would want to allign with Nay. So Nay is clearly from the same institute for the very very nervous as Holly is. Yet Sash chose to go to the loony bin to form his minority alliance.

I watched that sock incident again and Nay needed her head crammed in a plate of porcupine spines. Jud has every reason to despise her, and she doesn't like the way he looks at her. I imagine she has a lot of confrontations with people who look at her sorry ass.

Who is going to trust Chase now except the girls because he is a wimp.

Good point about Chase, but perhaps it will be forgotten?

I'm not stunned about the way they treated her. They were some petty bitches.

Charlie was the most pathetic one, honestly. "I really want to talk to her but my friends won't like me anymore! :(" What the hell, dude, you're 30 years old. Grow a pair.

At least Randy talked to Crystal.

Survivor Cook Islands and Survivor Fiji?

Which, incidentally, had an all-minority alliance band together to pick off the white people (Cook Islands) and a three-person alliance of black people making the Final 3 (Fiji).
