Survivor - Fans vs. Favorites

Ok, that was a Survivor classic. Kudos to Malcolm for orchestrating such an entertaining tribal. So glad they got Phillip off, and in such an amusing way. I don't think Phillip is deserving to win the runner up money and glad the guys did not want to drag him to the final. For a moment before giving his second idol to Eddie, I was afraid his overconfidence was going to send him home with 2 idols (which would not be the first time in Survivor.) Unfortunately, he really has his work cut out more than ever. Desperately needs to keep finding more idols and winning immunity challenges. But hopefully He, Reynold, and Eddie somehow manage to break up the other alliance. It's rare to see so much eye candy this late in the game.

Hallelujah! Thank you Malcom. I hate Phillip. Too bad he couldn't have been voted off three weeks ago so he wouldn't be on the jury.

I haven't been a fan of Malcolm much this season -- or ever since he became a total douchebag at the end of last season -- but this is the first time he ever did anything that I thought was strategically stupid. Oh don't get me wrong, I always enjoy seeing a dominant alliance get bitchslapped and it was even better that asshole Philip got the boot, but why not keep the extra idol for yourself so you'd be safe another week?

Then again the way they keep replanting idols on this show, Malcolm will probably find them both again, thereby eliminating the need for game essentials like winning immunity or you know, actually playing.

Have players always been allowed to privately huddle up during tribal and discuss how they should change their vote? I don't recall seeing that happening in Survivor before. It seems wrong. Private discussions during tribal should not be allowed.

Oh I completely agree. Don't get me wrong, Boston Rob played brilliantly and earned every penny of his million. I just got bored that season because no one even tried to put up a fight. That girl he took to the finals with him was about as useless a castaway I've ever seen on this show.

As a fan of the show myself, I get bored anytime they roll over like that. These players simply don't watch the show! If they did, they'd recognize red flags (e.g. dominant alliance members) right away and proceed accordingly.

I now realize that Phillip wanted to leave. He realized that his age was getting in the way for some of the challenges and someone from his group was going to have to get voted off, so he told his group to vote as they had planned so he would be the one to go.

Yeah, and he threw that one challenge too.

JEFF PROBST: First off, some perspective… Any time Phillip says anything, anything at all, I’m interested. When he ups the stakes and declares something important or assigns a Stealth R Us name to another tribe mate, I immediately begin to zone out all other distractions... Mostly I just love it when Phillip says… or does… anything. I would like to thank Phillip for all he gave this season. There are some who think we featured him too much, some who wish he had shown more of him and still others who wish he was never on in the first place. I am firmly planted in the “love me some Phillip” camp — and I’m sorry to see him go. But boy does it open up a whole new game.

OMFG. Somebody please contact Mark Burnett and make him give Jeff an intervention before he gets this show canceled.

Probst can be a dick in a lot of ways but on the topic of castaways who make for good reality TV, I get where he and any producer is coming from. They like Phillip types (even if we're annoyed by them). Every network operates this way, not just CBS.

The point is, there's a type of crazy that people tune in for (Rachel on Big Brother) and a type of crazy they don't (Philip) and Probst is unable to make that distinction which is kind of lethal for a producer. Also, he's had lots of other ideas for Survivor and they're ALL bad.

That's exactly what I thought when he played the Idol.
It was awesome to see philipp go (finally) with this move. But Malcom could have stayed much longer

- He would have 1 extra idol
- he could've looked again for the one he played
- He could still potentially win Immunity challenges
- ANd eddie would've been gone, which means : 1 friend on the jury, and 1 threat out for the Immunity challenges.

With that extra idol he could've easily been in the finals and problly win again. Now he doenst have any idol which is riskier IMO.

I still like Malcolm. I don't see what there is to dislike about him. Douchery. Didn't see anything to make me think he was a douche even in his season. I also loved that play that sent Phillip to Gitmo.

I'm not a fan of Probst's (ditto for Burnett) but in fairness, it isn't like it's any diff on Project Runway, Top Chef, ANTM, Idol, The Apprentice, Rupaul's Drag Race, etc. The producers are cheering on the train wrecks. At least on "Survivor" you have the chance to have some control over your destiny. On the aforementioned, you don't, hence the boring/listless ones going first and the Phillip types are given several passes even when they deserve to go.

Yes but...I only watch Survivor and Idol out of those shows, so I can only bitch about those two. ;)

I've been reading alot of rumors that either Survivor 27 or 28 will be Favorites vs. Family. I really hope this is just a bad rumor. I really could not bring myself to watch a Hantz family reunion. Seriously. That is one shark that should never be jumped. Here's an idea, how about doing just a regular Survivor?

But shooting for 27-28 does begin in May. Location has not been revealed yet. Seen rumors of Tasmania, but nothing that credible.

Even Russell Hantz was up in arms in protest over that idea on Twitter. I posted the screen caps of the tweets somewhere in this thread and it's fucking sad that even Russell Hantz might have more of a grip on the reality of this TV show than Executive Producer Jeffrey Probst.

Sadly, I think the fact that the One World went over like a lead balloon with the casuals means that they will never try another all newbies season again as long as Jeff's delusional ass is at the helm. At best we can hope for a Philippines situation where there's a nice variety of lulzy characters and smart players to offset the returning player circle jerks. Also featuring an editing team that doesn't totally suck.

Since they're always going for lousy ideas these days, why not just to Celebrity Survivor with all the reality shows hosts playing for charity? It would be worth it to see Jeff lose immunity challenges and a spot in the finals against three chicks: Julie Chen, Heidi Klum and Ryan Seacrest.

If Malcolm only saved himself he would have had his alliance down to 2 people. His goal with saving Eddie was to pull in more people to his alliance so the 6-3 can split to 4-5 or something. This was actually his best move.

Saving the other idol would have gotten him past next week, but then he would have been alone after that if Reynold didn't win immunity.

This also increases his chances with the jury should be make it to the final 3, because if Eddy's on the jury he might vote for him, and a few other people would as well depending on how much they hated Phillip and how well he sells that move to the jury. It further showed who S-R-us would try to eliminate if the 3 guys weren't an option - Andrea and possibly will tempt her to flip as well. After all, it's not a final 7, it's a final 3 or 2.

Erik shifted his vote to Phillip, so he could maybe align with the guys and make 6-3 a 5-4 split. They just then need to pull in one of the girls (Andrea/Sherri/Dawn) and they become the majority. This wouldn't be possible if Eddy was gone.

An easier way to look at this is from a chess point of view. If your opponent pins a piece to your king, you either sacrifice the piece being pinned, or bring in another piece as well to guard the piece in question, the king, and at the same time threaten your opponent's piece. Players who don't think long term strategy will sacrifice the piece and save the king for 2 more moves, but players who think long term strategy will go for the best shot.

You can't tell if this will pay off until next week, because generally when you're down so many pieces anything you do is a risk.

Finally, THANK GOODNESS Phillip is GONE.
