I feel more ashamed that this happened in Canada, more than I do about her being here in the first place.

I mean, the University had to know that she was going to say something that was going to turn a few heads in the wrong direction. She's like Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reily, in that something will be said just for pure SHOCK value; after all, if they made calm and rational points, most people wouldn't pay close enough attention...

Whether the University wanted this to happen is a better question...

Either way, I agree with torontoguy22, we prevent George Galloway from entering the country because of his views and beliefs and 'suspected' ties to certain organizations; yet we allowed an equally questionable, but right-wing figure into our country.

Anything can be taken to be slanderous. Even the laws of slander can be twisted to imply that those who would be slandered have to be protected by such laws because they are delicate wallflowers, incapable of defending themselves.. which is rather condescending, when you get down to it.

Our hate crime and hate speech laws were enacted to protect all people in our country, be they citizens or visitors. Coulter is as much protected by our laws as she is guilty when she breaks them. But they are our laws, and she should respect them.

Her American rights and laws stopped at the border. They don't exist here.

I don't know why some people here are confusing the right to freedom of speech with the right to a public platform.

Ann Coulter has unimpeded freedom of speech.

What she does not have is the right to speak to a graduating class or any other group where she is not wanted -- same as all of us.

If I want to deliver a speech to a graduating class, to the board of Apple, or to fully assembled Congress, am I denied free speech because no one wants me to do those things?

Of course not. And neither is she.

Saying racist things isn't 'freedom of speech'. Comment likes that should not be tolerated at all.

A caveat, if I may:

Saying racist things in and of itself is certainly covered in the US by freedom of speech. Same for homophobic things. I support the right of people to say what they will, with some limitations on incitement to violence and so on.

But what's critical to freedom of speech is that government can't limit it. That doesn't mean private citizens have to indulge one another in it at their own expense.

Ann Coulter's freedom of speech doesn't entitle her to deliver an address at a college, speak on a TV show or be published in a newspaper except as she is invited to do so. Same for all of us.

If she can be invited to speak, she can be dis invited to speak. Her free speech is not infringed upon, because she is still free to speak, though she is not entitled to a public platform.

I am committed to non-interference of government in self expression, and that includes Coulter and Fred Phelps and Karl Rove. I am equally committed to the rights of everyone else to choose whom to grant, or deny, a platform with their own resources.
