I think it's the people writing the giveaway to the wealthy who want to pretend this isn't a tax on us, so they get a free ride. They're the ones whispering in his ear.

Only the horde is going to buy that.

I heard an financial reporter say today that Wall Street thinks that Trump will back down on the tariffs when the going gets tough.

The term he used was T.A.C.O. - "Trump Always Chickens Out".

One thing I read is that the last shipments at the old tariff rates are arriving now. Anything new will be at the new rates. It was predicted that shortages and higher prices will be seen in a week or two. We'll see if that's right and if he T.A.C.O.'s then.

I just went and bought a bunch of summer clothes.

I'm already hearing from friends in LA that the ports of LA and Long Beach are running much slower, have fewer ships and they cut overtime a couple of weeks ago.

Even if he TACOs, we learned from the pandemic that our "just in time" ordering system takes weeks to get the supply chain going again. This could get worse before it gets better.

Japan is raising the subject of their Treasuries again as a negotiating tool.

Why do I think that even the precious people who have to have every latest iPhone might be not buying a new one
soon?

I also just upgraded my Iphone and bought that tablet I'd been thinking about.

I should point out that whether or not there is a huge tariff, the tech companies will say there is and raise prices. We may have to start bootlegging iPhones from Canada.

Once companies figure out that customers will pay higher prices, the prices rarely come down again.

It might be a good opportunity for Canadians to set up a vacation package that includes an upgrade to the vacationers' phones.

Just a question on #1 if they don’t separate the cost of the tariff from the cost of the product in states with a sales tax won’t people be paying a tax on the tariff?

Yes, because the supplier will pass the tariff on to retail prices. Considering that States with no income tax already pay the highest sales/property/incidental taxes, places with regressive tax schemes like Texas and Nevada will end up paying more tax than places with progressive taxation.

The bigoted idiots in the trailer parks who elected Toad are going to get to pay for his bloated ego.

Frankly, they fucking deserve it.

But I don't, and it fucking pisses me off.

Jon Cooper:

"As of 12:01 am ET today, most auto part imports will come with a 25% import tax.

Not a single one of the 10 million cars turned out by US plants last year was built without some imported parts.

The tariffs on parts will mean tens of billions of dollars in new costs to American car buyers and owners."

So what's the next shortage?
Per this article: clothing/fast fashion, holiday items, and school supplies.
Don't worry about toilet paper The COVID-year shortage was mostly due to distribution: janitor-supply firms supplying schools and offices had plenty, but no schools or offices were using it.
