Tariffs in the second Trump Administration [SPLIT]

Just a reminder again.

The Switzerland/Nevada thing is a bit of a mystery, but I assume they eat a lot of cheeses and chocolate

I imagine we have our sights set upon his state again.

"retaliatory tariffs during Trump's 2018 trade war crippled South Dakota's agriculture-dependent economy -- which relies on billions of dollars worth of soybeans, corn, beef and other agricultural products it exports abroad every year."

I know Britain will argue but Canada is our closest ally.

We always have been. So much of our history and development has been interdependent.

Even with those little blips in 1776-1789 and 1812-1814 when we were still a colony.

From an FB friend:

Less than 1% of fentanyl smuggling and illegal crossings into the US come from Canada, so these tariffs are not about drugs or migrants. It really is time that we, as Canadians, take a long hard look at this presenile rapist and convicted criminal our next door neighbours put in the White House, and ask ourselves what his real problem is with us. The concurrent tragedy is how much pain our response is going to cause our friends to the south. The fact that none of the governors and senators of the states that are about to be impacted are brave enough to challenge him on this is a masterclass in Republican spinelessness, cowardice, and lack of integrity.

I expect the same approach from the LCBO. Even if they don't remove it right away from shelves...I suspect that customers will avoid the products.
The LCBO is the largest buyer of wines and spirits in the world, so if they ain't buying it, we aren't drinking it unless we bring a bottle home with us while out of country.

Well...too little, too late.

And where are the rest of the governors?

Just so that you know which states we are targeting for tariffs and exclusions from imports.

Oh...and if some Americans still don't understand...the imposition of Tariffs was only made possible by creating a fake pretext 'crisis' and using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Trump admitted as much that it required some kind of Act to make the abrogation of an international treaty 'legal'.

Once again, it was never about drugs. Or immigrants.

It was just about a cash grab from the American consumers to balance tax cuts for the wealthy.

Americans have been played again for suckers.

And we've seen all this before in the 30's...when capitalist oligarchs supported Hitler's plan to pick the pockets of the Germans to finance his upcoming invasion of European countries.

Wall Street Journal editorial calls Trump tariffs ‘dumbest trade war in history’

And the Wall Street Journal is calling Trump out on these...although they still seem to confer some legitimacy on Trump's use of a fake 'Emergency' declaration as a pretext.

WSJ knows as well as anyone that the purpose of the tariffs is to raise revenue to offset the tax cuts.

And they touch on the bizarre notion of the US shutting down trade.

But Trump, as always eventually tips his hand and as I have noted for months now...thinks that the US is being ripped off because it runs a trade deficit with basically the world.

He was also on record in 2024 as wanting to demolish the auto pact...although it is staggeringly clear that he and his advisors don't understand how that whole side treaty works for the benefit of the auto industry in North America.

In his sophomoric rant against the WSJ yesterday, he noted:

“ The USA has major deficits with Canada, Mexico, and China (and almost all countries!), owes 36 Trillion Dollars, and we’re not going to be the “Stupid Country” any longer.”

As I noted in previous posts, the majority of the US trade deficit with Canada is for oil...which I also note, the US buys at deeply discounted prices to other foreign oil.

And odd, isn't it that if he wants to reduce the trade deficit, TrumpCo. backed the fuck off a 25% tax on Canadian petroleum. So while he rants that the US doesn't need any oil from Canada, apparently it does?
