Tariffs in the second Trump Administration [SPLIT]

So shipping down 60%...consumers are definitely going to be seeing empty shelves in about a month.

Meanwhile, it is clear that there is no coherent policy or execution.

It is mind-boggling that Congress refuses to act but you can bet that a lot of them are making a lot of money because of the chaos.

Schaudenfreude for a Friday.

These guys that donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration and were seated conspicuously at the inauguration event, have gotten their rewards since the election:
  • Bezos - losses total about $40 billion
  • Musk - losses total about $125 billion
  • Zuckerberg - losses total about $25 billion

Tim Cook doesn't own the large number of shares in Apple, so he's just considered a multi-millionaire but Apple as a company has lost $751 billion in valuation since Trump was elected.

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, only has about 140,000 shares of Alphabet, so he's only lost about $5.6 million in the past couple of months.

Get readyu to subsidize all the US farmers again.

I'd bet that farm bailouts aren't coming. Toad doesn't need them anymore and never cared in the first place. If it does happen, it will come from terrified Trogs in the House - with no guarantee he'd sign it.

Exactly from Congress...because they will be shitting their pants by the end of this year going into 2026 mid=terms.

Trump is simultaneously claining they have over 200 trade deals while claiming that tariffs will eliminate income taxes for people making less than 200 K when they have fully kicked in.

Income taxes or payroll taxes?

He says income tax.
Which means that people who get a paycheck would still pay taxes but people who live off investment income or annuities would not.

Treasury secretary Scott Bessent was making the tv rounds this morning and his argument concerning China and trade was that we buy 5 times from them as they buy from us so they are the ones who need a deal more so than the Americans. Thats good economic analysis and hard to disagree with but it’s only valid if the Chinese are as money grubbing as the Trump administration is. There are things some value more than money such as the ability to hold your head high because you bow down to no man.

Demanding respect for yourself and your country should not be discounted and when Trump says everyone now wants to ‘kiss his ass’ he stiffened more than a few spines. Knowing the price of everything but the value of nothing and assuming everyone is just like you is stupid negotiating.

Bessent, like Navarro, is so far out of his depth that he looks like an utter lightweight. China has an international reach and market and even if hurt by tariffs , WILL NOT YIELD.

In a few short months, Americans are going to notice the empty shelves and rising prices.

BTW. Apple just indicated it will move production of cell phones to India (likely Chinese owned plants) so Lutnick's wet dream of tiny fingered Americans putting in screws in a plant in Ipsilanti is likely a porn dream Nifty stories gone astray.

Everyone, Democrat and Republican, is out and about talking about how expensive houses are and how the US needs to build more of them.

Canada is laughing because a significant amount of lumber is imported from Canada.

China is laughing because just about everything else needed to build a house comes from China. US makes concrete and bricks but everything from nails to appliances used in home construction comes from China.

Americans have forgotten what China did to their own economy during the COVID pandemic. They have a much higher tolerance for economic hardship, certainly much higher than Americans. And they know that Americans cannot build finished goods without the cheap raw materials imported from abroad.

I agree Navarro is out of his depth but not Bessent, I honestly can’t figure out why he joined this shit show and wonder if he wished he hadn’t.

China is hemmed in by not allowing a domestic market to develop, it’s tough when you’re ascared of your own population and I agree given their history with the west these last 200 yrs I agree they will not blink first.

I’m already having a difficult time getting hardware for work. Everything is back ordered and some things they can’t even give me a delivery date for.

The Seattle Times reported that the port was empty...portending shortages in the next dew months.

Meanwhile...some rumblings about tariffs on automobiles being relaxed...we'll see. In the space of a day they go up, drop down, are on, are partly off>

Where they see a hostile and political act I see a vendor placing economic blame where it belongs.
