I thought the purpose of the tariffs is to force manufacturing to take place in the US and thereby reduce the trade deficit, while also reducing US economic dependence upon other countries.

The armies of millions of people- well, remember, the army of millions and millions of human beings screwing in little- little screws to make iPhones, that kind of thing is going to come to America. It's going to be automated and great Americans- the tradecraft of America, is going to fix them, is going to work on them.

The purpose of tariffs is to bake in a federal sales tax on the middle and poorer class and shift the revenue stream away from taxing income.

The topic of the thread isn't CNN.

It isn't your fallacious claim about Biden's handling of the economy or his supposed frailty.

It isn't about men in women's sports.

Or border control.

You are going to need to pace yourself.


To the point of the thread. Trump (and really shysters like Lutnick and Navarro) are trying to replay the Smoot Hawley Act that plunged the US and world into a deprtession and gave rise to the Second World War.

Congress has the sole power under the Constition to impose trade tariffs except in exceptional circumstances. Using Tariffs as leverage to barter trade agreements is not that and the court has been clear about this in their ruling yesterday.

The President is not empowered with imposing a tax on Americans.

The US had a fucking revolution about this very issue of taxation.

I am sitting on the edge of my chair, eager for you to cite legal and historical precedents that justify TRumPCo. in this action.

Meanwhile though, I see that the Appeals Court have granted an emergency stay to permit tariffs to be collected while the case works its way through to the SC.

Given that is your understanding of tariffs in your opinion does the way Trump keeps changing what the tariffs are from one day to the next conducive to the desired outcome you describe?
