I can't believe the last post here was 2016.
So, not a hater or a superfan. I listen to a lot of her music and hear why she got popular. I like a good bit of it. I came around to her outside of pop culture news and gossip which, yes, probably turns a lot of people off her. I also came around to her more not until years after leaving a supermarket job where she gets played constantly. That helped.
There really was something to her old music especially. Striking a balance between a relatable/storytelling/conversational kind of style and catchiness like she did. Not easy. She was neither too 'wordsy' or 'folky,' or too 'trashy pop.' At Taylor's best I enjoy the balance of those two things.
But homegirl or her team does not have the best instincts for choosing or curating her songs. I don't think they ever did, even at her musical peak (which I think was 'Red' to '1989' - she had moments before that, but also some really juvenile (like "Mean") or overly-sappy songs (like "I Almost Do") spoiling the party at times). Unfortunately it's kind of hampered her ability to put an album that's truly a fully even listen from start to finish.
I was originally gonna post this to Reddit, but it's fucking nearly impossible to post to any popular topics over there

so here it goes:
-
I'm rooting for her to put out just one perfect album - IDK if she's capable.
The reason I think is that even in the cases she has, or had, the songs from a certain album's recording cycle to do it, I think she or label, team, whoever, invariably choose a 'wrong' one or two to include on the main album rather than leave as a bonus track or a 'vault.'
I bought Red TV on CD a couple of years ago (my second fave of hers), I like it, but just talking the songs that make up the main album, the mish-mash of pop jams and slightly more coffee shop stuff doesn't work totally. It was an absolute crime to leave off 'The Moment I Knew' over 'Stay Stay Stay' for instance on the main version, and a few others are kind of more sappy for me, so I disqualified that album from being perfect right away.
A few weeks ago I bought 1989 TV on CD (Aquamarine Green version) - I still can't believe Team Taylor was bold enough to say 'collect all these different versions' though lol. Anyway, this one is a lot closer to being perfect for me, but the big hole in it for me is 'How You Get the Girl.' It's not terrible, but especially 'Wonderland' or 'New Romantics,' but also hell, even 'Sl**' or 'You Are In Love' are better than that one for me.
I think opinions would differ about the individual songs, but I'm sure anyone who's played a full TV would say of at least one of the songs 'why wasn't that on the main album instead of this other one?'.
For me her output has generally declined after 2014, just my opinion, I think '1989' was her shot to leave behind her 'Thriller' so to speak, but even at her prime, sometimes her song selection missed unfortunately, and I don't know if she has it in her anymore to be honest. Unfortunately. I find '1989' or '1989 TV' pretty fantastic, there just always seemed to be times that she left better songs on the table and went with one or two that sounded a bit more 'average' by comparison. Just IMO.
