Tennis Anyone?

As popular as it is, it is not a huge "mass sport" and the powers that be are not going to pour millions into television rights when they know they will get very little in return!
The same could be said for Ariadne auf Naxos, not to mention Die Aegyptische Helena!

Actually, the French Open is getting quite good coverage on ESPN2, if you have cable anyway.

JUBers,

Please advise me about what to look out for in the women's tennis at the FO. Tell me about the don't miss matches. #-o

I've got the men pretty well figured out. Andy Roddick seems to be benefiting from my donation of confidence (although my game today did not) and looks like playing on Tuesday. (!) :=D: (!)
I say sharapova, her first match was awesome i mean this was her first time on clay all year and her first real match play in 7 weeks.

That bitch came back from match points twice.
she's such a fighter, she reminds me of old Roddick.

and her pink outfit on red clay is hawt.:D

and im always interested in watching Venus, cause she's just that cool.;)

Havok, I love Tennis watching and playing - Right now I'm watching Rafael Nadel and just saw James Blake - what great asses!!!

I know it's not the most popular sport in the world, but I love it! Anyone else out there into tennis, or am I the only loser in JUB?

Don't worry about that Captain. Once we get a little further into this thing I'll be on here all the time yammering on about the matches I can't wait for and who better win. At the moment the bottom half of the womens draw is going to be the one to watch. It's looking for an Henin-Hardenne vs. Petrova (two of the top picks to win it) quarter final match. Hingis could play Dementieva in the round of 16 and the winner of that could face Clijsters in the quarters who would face the winner of the Henin/Petrova match in the semi's. So if I were you I'd keep an eye out for that half of the draw. The winner will likely come from that side.

With all of that said, there are always upsets.

The French fans are known for being extremly rude. Athough the Aussies do it when people are playing against one of their own. Other than that they're pretty good.

Petrova lost! :O I knew she was going to over do it with all of the tennis she'd been playing... well I didn't so much KNOW it as much as I thought it was possible, lol. Other than that not much excitement on the womens side. I'm glad that Molik won her first round match. She's had a really shitty year and a half and I'd like to see her get to where she was before all the sickness and junk. And Hingis was really looking on form!

Men's side was sadly predictible. The Americans are already starting to crumble. Blake made it through, but that's really the only American that could do any damage left over there. I can just imagine all of the french and spanish players going, "Welcome to France bitch!" to all of the American's. Oh well. Federer's still got his shoot!

It just hit me that if Federer wins this it'll make 4 in a row, or a Serena Slam (which I hate) as it's been dubbed.

well, she did it.

...I think roger is calling it the Roger slam.
he should keep calling it the serena slam, just cause he is much prettier.

Just in from playing night outdoor tennis for the first time in 3 -4 weeks. Everything went well tonight. The absence seemed to have helped my game and even the lights cooperated.

Got me thinking that time off is what some of the pros need. Lleyton Hewitt took it. Got married, had a kid and is now back playing his game again at the old standard. Andy Roddick needs to slip off to a desert island with a significant other for a while and maybe he could regroup. Federer seem to take care that he doesn't overdo it by carefully choosing tournaments. Nadal on the other hand does play too much and seems to be always out with injury.
...and look what the prolonged absence did for James Blake, although none of us would choose his route.

I think you've got a good point there Captain. Remember about 2 years ago Kim Clijsters was off the face of the planet. She came back ranked # 130 something and ended up winning the Pacific Life Open and the Nasdaq 100 back to back. She then went on to win the US Open series and the US Open! A little time off helped her A LOT!

I think Andy probably could take a year or so off and maybe that really would help his game. You've always gotta worry about burn out too. When you start playing tennis so young you'll all the sudden wake up and realize that you've never stoped to enjoy all the things you've worked so hard for. That's what happened to Martina Hingis.

I think it's the same way with the men, but I know the women have certain tournements that they are required to show up at. For each player it's different though. It's kind of the WTAs way of making sure that they have a couple of big names at every tournement. For example; last summer Kim Clijsters signed up for 4 (I think it was 4...) tournements in a row. She figured she'd make it to the second week of each one, but wasn't anticipating on winning the first 3. She played for 3 staight weeks and wanted to cancel the 4th tournement in Canada, but couldn't because that was one of the tournements that she was required to show up at. So she went on and played it anyway.

I know the Williams sisters (mainly Serena I think), keep getting fined for not playing at the tournements that they have requirments for.

As far as playing as certain NUMBER, I don't think they have to really. But the catch is, you get more points the more tournements you play. So if you really want to do good, you have to play a lot of tournements.

yeah its the same for the ATP...but as far as rankings/standings they are based on your results the previous year so by the end of the year you have a certain number of points to defend the next year or your ranking slips.

example roddick was the winner of queens and a wimbly finalist...if he does'nt make it to the final again and even if he does and guys with less points from last year to defend do better...he falls to possibly 8 or 9...
but since he went out in the first round at the u.s open if he improves on that this year he'll go up.

i dont know if that made sense tennis is so number complicated,
but basically its in the players best interest to play the same tourneys as the year before and maybe more aswell as similar if not better results.

fines for not playing tourney's... fines for not doing media...point penalties for audible obscenities....disqualification for not wearing 90% white at wimbledon, tennis is a bitch- but that's why we love it.:-({|= :D

It's always seemed me that, as long as the top players keep their big sponsors, any fines do not amount to more than pocket change. They can, in fact, generate publicity which in turn will increase earnings.

yeah that and consistently winning.
i heard that agassi's prize money only was around 31 million.
venus williams at over 16 million.

speaking of agassi i love that he is like the god of mens tennis...inevitably they talk about his wife & they have to mention she won wimbledon 6 more times than him and basically won every slam at least 4 times.:hearts:

she's my hero.

Steffi had, and still has real class on the court. :=D: :=D: She still looks pretty good in the stands, too.

I've been watching some tennis this afternoon. Roddick against Tipsarevic. That Tipsarevic is soooo sexy! And Roddick - well, I notice he's wearing something dark under his white tennis shorts :)

I was just thinking the same thing... I really like his piercings, too!

I know we've gone thru this before, but I still get confuddled over scoring.

Andy won his 1st round match at Wimbly 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2.

What do the numbers in parens mean?

The numbers in parenthesis are the scores in the tiebreaker. A tiebreaker, if you don't know, is when a set is tied 6-games all. The first player to seven points up by 2 wins the tiebreaker. In the first set Andy lost the tiebreaker 7-5 and thus lost the set 7-6.

Also, when showing the score they may show 7-6(5) instead of showing 7-6(7-5) and you would understand that the player won the tiebreak 7-5. Or, for example, it could be 7-6(11) and you would know the tiebreak was 13-11. Only at three of the major grand slams (Australian, French, Wimbledon -- Not the US Open) there are no final set tiebreaks. That means that if there is a third set for women or a fifth set for men they keep playing. So if you look at the score for Ljubicic's match today he won 11-9 in the fifth set, not 7-6 (11-9 in the tiebreaker).
