Texas GOP Platform Calls For Imprisonment of Homosexuals

That is abhorent and there is no defense of such bigotry.

However, maybe my reading skills have failed me. It would seem Jeb and Cletus are asking for a law to make it a felony to issue a license to marry to same sex couples. Again I could not disagree more but it does not make homosexuality illegal or a felony.

We would all do well to remove the hysterics from the objective...lol... news and from our discussions. Would we not?

it does say that marriage is only defined by the church... if thats the case, they want to stop marrying people across the board as a state gov't and leave it to someone else.

that is weird and a good reason to argue for strong gov't.
 
Yep the Texas GOP is more hateful than they've ever been.

I thought for sure that the last time that Republican Texas Governor "Good Hair" Perry was up for re-election that he'd get his "base" out by proposing a Texas Constitutional Amendment to codify marriage between one Man and one Woman was just a ruse to distract from the fact that he had opponents.

He won re election by 38% of the Vote.

Guess what?

It's re election time!

Did the Texas Democrats stand in the Texas GOP's way in 2006?

Nope! [-X

In fact the Texas Democratic Party laid low.

And The current Texas Democratic Party Chair; Boyd Richie is up for re election next week.

And former Houston Mayor Bill White is Rick Perry's Democratic opponent in this fall's election.

What's a Gay Texas Democrat to do? :cool:

The Texas GOP wants to go all early 1930's Germany on our ass, and the Texas Democratic Party appears to want to placate them so that they might stand a chance of retaking the burned out Texas Governor's Mansion. :mad:

Is it too much to ask for some leadership here? :grrr:
 
I think Texas would make a fine independent republic again.
 
ALong with California..... after there economy implodes because of inept give away policies it will make the housing bubble look like an average day on wall street

ahhh.... so the hardliners are trying to yank the national chain. sounds like another election year stunt.

Mid terms are unusually bizarre this year.
 
sigh - I really do love Texas, the people are very friendly, cost of living is cheap, everyone pretty much minds their own business but then you have Texas politicians who are some of the most absurd, backwards, hateful people I have ever seen speak.

At least I have a Mayor who is gay friendly since she is a proud and open Lesbian :)

From my experience it's which ever train wreck | fear that they relate to the most emotionally. :cool:

Here in Texas Gay Democrats are expendable even within our own party. Especially amongst the "Conservative Christian" African-American Caucus, and the predominately "Catholic" Hispanic Caucus.

Though to be fair we have friends in both caucuses.

"We also believe that no homosexual should have the right to custody or adoption of a
minor child, and that visitation with minor children by such persons should be prohibited but if ordered by the court limited to supervised periods."

"We oppose open adoption and adoption by homosexuals."

They want to do away with stem cell research, a woman's right to choose. They want to privatize Social Security and invest it in the stock market. (If they did that 5 years ago wouldn't everyone's benefits have been wiped out?)

They use the term "Obamacare". Exclide any gay person from the Americans with Disabilities Act. No bilingual education. Religion in public schools.

"We oppose any sex education other than abstinence until heterosexual marriage."

....and on and on. These ideas were rejected by the American voters in 2008 and they're still clinging to these ideas. Wackos.
 
Actually if you had reinvested in say Chase and Citi... your investment would be double by now...

Yes, and I'm proud to say that under the Texas GOP regime *cough* Leadership Texas ranks 49th on just about every; teen-pregnancy, childhood obesity, number of failing schools, etc., just above Mississippi. ..|

We actually had that very law within the city limits of Cincinnati fro 1993 to 2004. It was passed as Article XII of the City of Cincinnati Charter. It read:

The city of Cincinnati and its various Board and Commissions may not enact, adopt, enforce, or administer any ordinance, regulations, rule or policy which provides that homosexual, lesbian, or bisexual orientation, status, conduct or relationship constitutes, entitle, or otherwise provides a person with the basis to have any claim of minority or protected status, quota preference or other preferential treatment.

The provision of the City Charter shall in all respects be self-executing. Any ordinance, regulation, rule or policy enacted before this amendment is adopted that violates the foregoing prohibition shall be null and void and of no for or effect.

It is difficult to understand the meaning of the charter amendment from the text. What this amendment did was make it illegal to prosecute anyone who discriminated against gays. By prohibiting the city from recognizing homosexuality as a "protected status," gays could not file discrimination claims for being fired for being gay, or for being kicked out of housing for homosexuality, etc. The law was challenged in court, and was appealed all the way to the US Supreme Court, which upheld it by refusing to hear the case.

Finally, in 2004, we got a Democratic mayor (Charlie Luken) who made it part of his platform to get this law repealed. A documentary film "A Blinding Flash of the Obvious" was made, explaining how we got the charter amendment repealed. It is available in three parts on YouTube:

The local Republican Party has vowed to re-instate the anti-gay charter amendment, but they do not yet have the votes to do this.
