What is the appeal???

I mean you can say things better and faster just by calling the other person.

I have no idea, but the appeal seems to be more important than staying alive. I was about to cross a street the other day at an intersection. I had the green light to cross to the west. Coming south on a one-way street, a girl on a bicycle came barrelling down the street with her right hand on the handlebar and her left hand holding her phone and pressing buttons to beat the band. She didn't slow down and barely even looked up from her phone before going through the red light and crossing two lanes to get to the other side of the street.

Calling is an immediate intrusion on whatever a person's doing at the time - texting is not. Also, for no-reply-needed messages, texting is quicker if you factor in the inevitable "hi" and "bye".
Actual conversations, yeah, they're better in person.

What about endless conversations done with texting---one text begets another and another?

What a bunch of lame excuses to avoid the REAL reason KIDS text !!
(and some semi-adults).....
ALLEY - MY MAN - it's to AVOID TALKING TO ANOTHER HUMAN BEING.
my friends granddaughter will NEVER answer the house phone - or her OWN cell phone (if it rings) - because she admits that if she did that - she would actually have to SPEAK to someone - OR worse - take a message for someone in the house. and she is not alone - she the benchmark of her generation (16 years old) -- she will actually talk (in person) to her only 2 BFF's - but never talk on the phone -
IT'S like they will go to hell if they speak into the thing - ONLY TEXTING is SANCTIONED BY THE GODS.
Alexander Graham Bell would have a stroke if he knew!!

they AVOID speaking to other humnoids AT ALL COSTS. IF you e-mail or TEXT - You don't have to talk - you don't have to hear the emotion in another person's voice - - you can also keep a "record" of the convo to use it against the person that sent it - when you have your next fight --

I work with a LOT of under 25 kids. They walk past you in the hallway and look away -- pretend you're not there. if I am still stupid enuff to say Hey- howzit goin? -- as i pass - i NEVER get a reply - They just walk on by - EYE CONTACT? FORGET about it - you could rape any of them with your eyes - and they would never EVER look at you... is there something in the HIGH FRUITCOSE CORN SYRUP that is damaging the brains of the new generation? WTF?

Txt messages can be done all day, instead of spending time talking to someone on the phone for a little bit.

You're kidding rite? like you can't talk on the phone for hours and hours??
since when is there a time limit on phone calls but not the number of texts you can send..

Maybe after how many times have you cum in 24 hours - we need how many texts have you sent in 24 hours?

Some girl recently won big bucks for 500 texts -- don't know the timeframe - but it's totally rediculolus not to mention EXPENSIVE .

It is an excuse to remove human to human contact to a more abstract level.

Most of the txting is just mindless crap reduced to txtspk.

No wonder most people under the age of 25 are increasingly socially retarded.

I nearly wrote the exact same thing, verbatim.

I see it in my younger siblings - with IM and texting, social contact and interaction has been reduced to a minimum and as such, has retarded many young kids' ability to carry on a conversation in person. My brother is a smart kid at 22 but he's socially awkward on many levels because he'd rather text and IM than verbally communicate. When he's in a group setting where people are talking he's often awkward and rarely filters what he says, creating odd moments.

texting is good for sending your address and time details.

i use texting a lot because most of the day i cannot stop and answer a phone call. if its someone i know calling me, i will usually text them and tell them im at work and that i would get back to them later. it is also convenient to say what is needed and not have a long drawn out conversation on the subject. i also use texting a lot if i miss class to find out homework and stuff.

It is useful if you don't need a reply or you don't want to disturb them. People text me all the time, it would be much worse if those people were calling me all the time.

Got me thinking, so. . .

June 1, 2009:
Teenagers sending and receiving an average of 80 text messages each day may be vulnerable to repetitive stress injuries of the thumb, according to the New York Times. As with Blackberry Thumb, compulsive texting can cause cramping, pain or numbness. While previous reports have stated that teens seem largely immune to Blackberry Thumb and that problems (like tendonitis) tend to crop up in patients in their 40s and 50s, the long-term effects of frequent texting are unknown. Ergonomics researchers are just beginning to study texting's impact, according to the Times.

Unknown date:
Virgin Mobile has launched a website which explains how to avoid repetitive strain injury (RSI) from sending too many text messages.

New findings from Virgin Mobile reveal that:

• Latest figures from the MDA reveal that over 100 million text messages are sent every single day in the UK alone
• 3.8 million British mobile phone users suffer from text-related injuries
• 38% people suffer from sore wrists and thumbs from texting
• Virgin Mobile link up with the British Chiropractic Association to help prevent Text Message Injury ( TMI )
• Visit www.practisesafetext.com for further information

And this entire article from the New York Times is an interesting read. Texting may be doing much more harm than simple sore thumbs:

Well you can talk for hours and hours, but cellphones charge talk time by the minute, and an unlimited data plan for texting is cheaper.

not to mention kids and people have school and work to do. so keeping a convo going while in work or school is so much easier.

not to mention the conversation is more private. unless someone gets your phone of course.

When teenagers today are 40, just imagine the advances in medicine for them.

i personally don't see anything wrong with txting, but i am still a teen, sooooo.

and for me, none of my friends write text messages in txt speak. we always write the full words out with minimal punctuation though.

Do you have any idea how contradictory those two sentences are?

The kids are in school to learn. The people are at work to work. They shouldn't be "keeping a convo going".

Yeah, but we live in the real world. Not the world that is supposed to be.

Kids do get in trouble for texting in high school, but that doesnt stop any of them.

What an incredibly infantile response, yet not at all surprising coming from the youngest generation.

"There are rules, but they don't apply to me." Can't wait to see how far that gets you in your professional life.

And that's precisely why this world is going to crap. Just imagine the future when those people are in charge.
