texting

What an incredibly infantile response, yet not at all surprising coming from the youngest generation.

"There are rules, but they don't apply to me." Can't wait to see how far that gets you in your professional life.
It isn't just the "younger generation" texting at work and school. So don't act like it is.

And that's precisely why this world is going to crap. Just imagine the future when those people are in charge.
I'm not all that worried. When you were young, your elders were saying the same thing about you. I choose to ignore (no offense to you) the rantings of the older generation about us young-ins.

this is soo sad - those of you that are finding reasons to TEXT -- are
1. All under 25
2. looking for rationale to support NEVER having to talk to a person !

when i was working - we were - as a company - very very heavy into leaving VOICE MAILS - it was a time that was overlapping with e-mail's birth... i would walk around the building - stopping at various emplyees desks - say hi - and begin to discuss the subect matter of their VOICE MAIL - -and -- without exception - they would say - why are you here? i left you a voice mail - and i would say - yeah, and i wanted to give you an answer - -IN PERSON!! IT makes them sooo uneasy?? WHY -??? it's not like I was a big freeking V.P. or something.
THE DAMAGE being done to young people's hands because of these phones is HUGE - and the orthopaedic group i go to - for something else- has over 10 DOCS - and they can't keep up with all of these problems.. We are raising another generation of not only SOCIAL OUTCASTS - but SICK social outcasts that will cost MILLIONS AND MILLIONS in health care benefits to try to fix their hands/wrists - before they are even 30.. and then there is disabililty claims and worker's compensation claims -- MORE MILLIONS.
Yeah- you guys enjoy it while it lasts - keep on texting - but don't cum around when you can't close your hand enuff to beat your meat - cuz it hurts too much.

With texting, your constantly talking to another person. The person on the other side of the text is a human after all, and they are talking about a lot of stuff.

I know my texts range from serious, to just being bored and wanting to talk to someone sporadically.

And none of my friends are anti-social. Yes we text, but we also see each other a lot. I think that's a common misconception that young people never see each other face to face and don't like human interaction. That isn't true at all, I see my friends all the time. And still text with them.

If anything, people today are more connected and in contact with each other than ever before. The only difference is that it isn't always in person.

I never get how CONSTANTLY talking to another person all day is being anti-social. Just because it isn't always in person, suddenly it is being anti-social, even though I am being social all day long.

OKAY - last time -- YOU'RE NOT TALKING - (while you're texting)
YOU'RE KEYBOARDING .....
you're leaving a message... that's all..

I'm done -- Good nite!
Thanks Alley - for providing the GASOLINE - AND the MATCH !! luv you!

And last time, so? It still doesn't make me any less anti-social for not vocalizing the words to people. They still get the message, we still have the long conversation about said guy someone is into, and he/she still gets the advice, or satisfaction that they wanted.

Yeah my Sir thinks the same way.

However, when I am at work.

If my Sir calls me or something or I find out that something is happening and I need to inform my Sir immediantly. It is very hard to take out my phone and call my Sir quick.

Like texting you do have to type or push the digits. However, with texting once you type it sends that's it.

If it's a phone call you have to wait for the dial tone. And than if they don't pick up leaving a message.

That takes time away from work especially if you need to give a quick message. With a text you can simply text, "I'm working an extra hour today."

Texting that would take. Well let's find out. Took me 10 seconds to text that on my iPhone.

However, with a call yes you can select from the contact book or recents. But once you do. There is a SLIGHT 5 second pause for the call to connect.

Once it connects than the dial tone begins. This can take from 5-15 seconds.

And depending where the person is the house if they have to go to another room to get the phone or if they have slow reaction times with getting the phone.

Now to actually say your message when you call someone it is customary to say some type of greeting. Even if it's quick. Such as, "Hello Sir, I just wanted to inform you that I am working an extra hour today so I will be home later. That is all."

That's an extra 5-10 seconds.

And if you have to leave a message than the dial tone is usually 15 seconds.

So the total time for texting a quick message.

Texting: Less than 10 seconds.
Phone Call: 15-25 seconds

When you are working during a VERY busy shift. EVERY SINGLE SECOND counts. So if you can save just a few seconds it's worth it.

The point is in some situations you aren't always able to communicate by voice. But more than likely you will be able to with a text.

Now as for texting conversations. No. I don't get into that. This is just one example of how texting is useful.

However. I hate the fucking, "Hey do u wnt to c a movie 2n8".

Text talk pisses me off and it almost is like you are so lazy that you can't even spell properly. I know that's not the case since with some phones texting is different than with a full QWERTY keyboard or touch keyboard. But still.

That is what I find annoying with texting. And as for MMS. I'll let you know once AT&T decides to stop being a dick and let's iPhone users in the US get MMS.

I'm pretty sure people are going to be awkward if they're going to be awkward and it's not texting that makes people awkward.

I haaaaaate talking to people when I can't see them (phone calls) and so I text them instead. People know never to call me. Won the lotto? Txt it. Sudden family death? Txt it.

Video chat on instant messengers are cool, and IMing is fun too. Just because someone leaves out a vowel in a word or three of their texts/IMs doesn't make them stupid or socially retarded.

There are just some people who are weird and always have been. Some of y'all are reminding me of the grouchy old neighbor yelling at kids to "GET OFF MY LAWN!"

lol that's all i'm seeing in this thread.

There has to be a balance. Saying something like, "OMG", "LOL", "WTF" or things like that aren't so bad but even too much of it gets annoying.

But my god. I know someone who texts me all the time replacing every letter or word with something that just looks so illegible and you can barely understand it.

It surprised me but even my dad texted me once and used something like "R U". He's only done it once or twice since than though so it's not a real problem. But when you replace EVERY word and either try to shorten everything or replace every letter to the point where it's not even english anymore.

Than why not just invent "Text Language" and say that to learn the new language you must by a cell phone without a QWERTY keyboard...

I do think that the posts such as "TEXTING IS MAKING PEOPLE AWKWARD AND STUPID AND IT ISN'T HUMAN INTERACTION"

What the hell do you think forums like JUB are doing. You aren't interacting with someone's voice or by seeing them. It all depends on how you use it and for what purpose.

And if you are going to say that texting is the problem than IM clients should be included as well. And..I won't even get into facebook or twitter..

Texting can be a VERY useful tool if people don't abuse it and actually text legible words. And not everyone has huge conferences or conversations with texting. Each person uses technology in his or her own way for their own purposes.

Would you kindly show me where I was 'ranting'?
Well you yourself weren't ranting.

But worried about the state of the world and what will happen when my generation takes over is usually in line with the mantra the older generation has always taken on.

I think the people in charge now are more prone to kill us all than anyone in my generation personally.

see, no one has even texted me like that with letters missing and the such.

every once in awhile, someone will do R U and small stuff like that, but it isn't common for me.

same in instant messaging. me and my friends always right full sentences. doesnt mean it doesn't happen though. i have seen some sentences from people where it was barely readable.

Calling is too expensive.
A call from my mobile to another is 30p (ish) a minute. A text is 8p. I can normally say what I want in 1 text message, and very rarely does it take 2 or 3.

A phone call costs 30p as soon as the other person picks up, so I'm saving A LOT of money by texting.

I'm going to steal your friends than :D

Things like. Oh yes I have examples.

"K wel go soner come ova wen u done wok"

"7 a ten"

"T can leave wen u need ta go"

"My friends. Ima go dm at 5 if u wanna com"

And i've had some people text me freaking paragraphs that are fully legible.

But it's just when people get so lazy and they barely wanna type is when texting gets annoying. But you are right. Not EVERYONE is that bad with texting. But some people are..and those are the people who text while they drive. I can guarantee you that.

But do make a good point. Things like "How R U" aren't too bad. I am glad that you and your friends type or text legible on a regular basis. And I can understand someone doing something like "Hey wats up dude" if they are good friends and they just joke around. Or even doing ":P" in a message.

But it just depends. I've told some people who text me that I hate the lack of effort they barely put in and some care and some don't. But it is very understandable if two people have a thing they do and it's an inside thing between them.

And with things like MMS. It sounds like it would be much easier to send a video clip or picture instead of sending that in an email. An email takes a lot longer to send on a phone especially if you attach something.

I love texting...
I dunno why tho... its just I dont like talking on the phone...

^haha wow, no one has EVER texted me like that in a message.

For people on a T9 keyboard, doing short hand is so much harder than just using complete words, and a lot of my friends use a T9 keyboard where the words finish for you.

Some have full keyboards now with the new phones, but they still type full words out cause they are used to it now.

I do get a "Hey wats up dude" all the time, but that kinda carries over from IMing when we all would start a message with "wats up?"

The How R U is kinda common to. But not so much for me.

Lol those examples are crazy though. I would have to talk to my friends if they typed like that regularly.

The word correction isn't always good. It helps sometimes but I might turn mine off.

When they first introduced it I do remember people making a big deal about it though. But even with the sidekicks I knew SO MANY PEOPLE who still texted in an illegible way just because they were used to it. Yeah that's not too bad.

It just depends who you are talking to I suppose.

I am kinda wondering if people like touch keyboard or physical keyboards on cell phones though. Now that both are out and you can get either one on different types of phones. That would be an interesting question.

I don't know. I don't even have a cell phone and if I had one, I'd probably end up smashing it with a hammer if people started texting the hell out of me.

On some sites I read, a lot of people don't like the all screen cell phones. They get mad with the absence of a physical keyboard.

I don't think it is that big a deal though. After a month with a touch keyboard, you get used to it, and usually forget why you disliked it in the first place.
