texting

Those are OLD!!! most deaf nodays use VP- VideoReplay Phone on their television or Computer. I have one at home and i use it once in while to talk to mmy friends

But that is a genuine reason for texting. It's really the only form of distance communication you and other deaf people have available to you.

I still remember the old TTY systems. I've actually used one of these. My friend had it in his house:

SKSK

(I can't believe I actually remembered that!)

I used that TTY in the NAVY for many years !! Does everyone know the difference between chad and chadless tape? --

HARDING - I consider ALPHA a friend - i was in no way insulting her - if she felt that what - i would most likely be castrated by now -- anyone and everyone 20-30 years YOUNGER than me IS a 'kid"..

AND -- JUST IN TIME FOR THIS THREAD - TODAY -- a "kid" came into the store and asked for an application. So what? you say !!
He filled out the ENTIRE APPLICATION IN : You guessed it !!

TEXT ABBREVIATIONS !! every bit of the 2 pages of quesions/ info .....
The Store manager - after he pissed his pants laughing - had to get help for a GEN X'r to decipher what the hell he was trying to say. This Highschool student - soon to graduate with a actual diploma - can't write in ENGLISH? wtf? and don't say he's an isolated case - he is our future !!
and BTW does anyone think this kid will be able to get a job writing applications like that ?

Text all you want- i could give a rats ass -- you will have the carpal tunel surgery - not me -- you will forget - if you ever knew - how to spell -- how to feel - how to be around people .
I've used a computer since 1972 -- i think thats BEFORE many of you were born -- point is - I'm not an old troll under a bridge - I'm a pretty "hip cat" -- i can carry on a convo - with "kids"- they actually think I'm "cool"-- i know what FML means. I know what POS - or PAW means ! I WANT to understand them. - I'm just afraid of the future. One of you might become Governor of Alaska -- no wait -- that might be a good thing..

He is an isolated case. No one is that stupid to write in text speech on a application.

I don't view texting/sms-ing as a form of convenience. It's just another way of conveying your message. Some words are better text-ed and some are better said.

That being said, I prefer face-to-face conversations. That's how I like it. I'm shy and all but I still like to see and feel and hear humans.

I wasn't offended. Harding just hasn't come across a thread where I've dished it out too. ;)

Your post reminded me of something interesting though. Originally, I assumed you were a young teen. My conclusion was based on the way you communicate on JUB. I'm unable to follow pieces of your posts sometimes, and must rely on context clues to tie up the loose ends. Hey, I'm older and am not versed in internet speak (I don't understand LOL cats either). But, from chatting w/ you, I know you've accomplished many things in your lifetime and are very intelligent. So clearly, you're able to turn "it" off and on depending on the circumstances. Since you're able to communicate in a professional manner when you're in an environment that calls for it, and are also able to communicate informally when you're in a relaxed environment, why on earth do you presume that the rest of us are unable to do the same. Sure, you ran into one crazy kid who was clueless (or was he? Maybe he just didn't want the job and his folks were making him apply for it. Screw up the application as a way out.) However, I believe most of us have mastered the fine art of knowing whether formal or informal communication is proper for the given circumstance.

Also, the notion that kids do not communicate face to face is unrealistic. Kids attend school. They work. They have families and form relationships. It's impossible for them to go through the day w/o speaking to someone.

As for the fella that passed you in the hallway w/o saying hello, maybe he's shy. Introverts and shy people (often one in the same) aren't keen on chatting a person up. Extroverts are much more likely to talk your ear off. I know, I am one. Perhaps this person wasn't.

Like with everything - it's certainly unfair to "generalize" - it's just that alley's thread came at a time when this topic has been very much "in my face". When the clerk at the supermarket is stocking the shelves with ONLY ONE HAND - because SHE is talking on her cell with the other she is cheating the company - and yes, I reported her to mangement.
When my grand neice tells me that she WILL NOT answer the house phone (hell, she will not even answer her own cell phone unless she WANTS to) it makes me wonder - why go to such lengths to AVOID talking to someone -- maybe it's me !! but she insists she will not answer - (even with caller ID) mostly because it means she will have to take a message for someone else in the house and she can't be bothered. Sadly, her friends all feel the same way. so i guess, the only face to face they are having is with their BFF's in school or at micky D's.
There is way more than one kid at work that will not give out a simple "hey" - or make eye contact -again - maybe it's a generational thing. - They can and do speak to customers (maybe because they HAVE TO).
The engraving on my tombstone will probably say "Could start a convo with a rock!" Cuz I'm a Libra - and I love to talk to peeps.
I have a cell phone because it's somewhat convenient -- I can type (keyboard) over 85 words per minute with fairly good accuracy - but I still have no need to text anyone for any reason. Maybe some day- but not now !! (Yet, I don't consider sending an e-mail "impersonal')-- that's convenient too - especially when you're "talking" to someone with a 6 hour time difference

Those are OLD!!!

I know they're old. I said so myself. Back in the '70s when I used them, they were donated teletype machines which the deaf people of the region could get for their homes. There was one like that in the main office here in Peterborough and I knew a number of people in the city as well who also had one in their homes.

The last time I used one, smaller versions about the size of a typewriter were coming out. Computer versions hadn't been invented yet.

for some its just easier, for me i hate holding phone to my ear, id prefer texting unless its someone's voice who i enjoy hearing

If you're in a hurry, you can get to the point real quick and avoid long conversations about things you didn't want to discuss in the first place.

It's also easier when you're not sure if people can be disturbed by a phone call, but you want to let them know something. You can be assured that sooner rather than later they will read the text.

I prefer texting over calling. :)

I feel the same way...
