Thad1527 Appreciation Thread

I'm getting a flu shot Monday. But not just for my health...I used to take pharmacy inventories before I quit August 8, and I'm nosy enough to ask how things go without me.😆

Great pic of Roxie, I'll bet she's a sweetie! I used to have cockatiels, and a couple of them stole my heart.

Yeah, it's that time to get flu shots again.

Good Wednesday morning, Thad! (*8*)

Sounds like you had a good time at the National Coming Out Day block party. We could use more of that down here right now.

Good Saturday morning, Thad! (*8*)

I hope that moneymaking opportunity worked out for you. And I forgot. When is the New Jersey Devils hockey game?

Yesterday was my trip to Newark, for New Jersey Devils hockey and a good meal.

So many choices, but I went with the tried-and-true. Spanish Tavern has been in Newark since 1934. The food, service, and atmosphere were so good.

To start, I had a delicious glass of sangria, and minestrone soup. Dinner rolls were OK.

The main course was veal medallions San Jose, fork-tender veal in a tomato and mushroom sauce. It was served with yellow rice and crispy Spanish potatoes. So good.

Then to Prudential Center (about a 10-minute walk) for hockey. But what a crazy game! The Coyotes aren't supposed to be good, but they got a 2-0 lead. The Devils are supposed to be good, and they came back to lead 3-2. But lots of penalties, and the Coyotes tied it on a power play when the Devils simply could not clear the puck.

It went to overtime, then a shootout, and the Coyotes beat goalie Akira Schmidt twice. So a 4-3 overtime loss for the Devils and a downbeat train ride home for me.

My next hockey game is Tuesday in Philadelphia. It's the Flyers' home opener and it starts at 6 PM. They're having a celebration starting at 3 PM and I'll probably go.

Thad, are there still good Portuguese restaurants in Newark's Ironbound neighborhood, or have the Portuguese there been entirely supplanted by Brazilians?

It sounds like you had a good time despite the hockey team loss. It looks like you had a great meal, though the meal is a bit different from the typical Cuban/Spanish fare you see in Florida. You don't tend to see sangria served, and instead of rolls, you usually get partially sliced Cuban bread loafs, or perhaps buttered Cuban bread slices. The restaurants down here are big on black beans and rice. You'll get black beans, either by themselves or as black bean soup. And you will get a choice of yellow rice, which usually has a few vegetable bits like green peas or carrots in them, or plain white rice. Sometimes you might see Spanish bean soup. I've never seen potatoes or minestrone, but you usually get a serving of ripe plantains (platanos maduros). The entrees tend to be things like pork chops, pulled pork (ropa vieja), palomillo steak, steak Milanesa with thick tomato sauce, or chicken (pollo). In Tampa sometimes you'll see the Cuban cuisine blended with Italian, since both groups immigrated there at the turn of the 20th Century, and tended to intermarry there.

I had some friends that were into the Tampa Bay Lightning when I lived there, and I started going with them to some of the games. They played in the arena now known as Tropicana Field, then known as the Thunderdome, across the Bay in St. Petersburg. The place was originally built as a baseball stadium, as they wanted to attract a major league team, but MLB wanted to establish a team in Miami first. I don't know if the record still holds, but in those days the Lightning had the six or seven largest Major League Hockey attendance records due to all those extra seats. They now have an arena in downtown Tampa. But in those days it was fun to take in the games. Sometimes we'd plan an outing, and other times it would be spontaneous. I remember one time we had planned on watching the Gasparilla parade, sort of Tampa's Mardi Gras knockoff celebration in late January/early February, but the weather was freezing cold that day. So we decided to go watch a hockey game across the Bay instead.

What you had looks like a good Northern Spain meal! The minestrone soup would be called cocido or something, and the veal looks delicious. The crispy potatoes look good but they aren't that common here: more often we have patatas fritas, that is long squared cuts (like french fries).

I'm glad you enjoyed the evening :)

It's still easy to find Portuguese food, and Portuguese, in the Ironbound. There's a Brazilian presence and it's now easy to find Brazilian food too. Remember, Portugal is the only European country to have ever been ruled from the Anericas...those years when the capital was in Rio!

Spanish Tavern has many northern Spanish delicacies. There was something a la Corunanse, which is clearly northern.

And now I want to eat my way around South Florida, too. Comidas criollas....yum. Let's do it right and hit El Siboney in Key West. Or Calle Ocho. And a Nicaraguan coffee shop and somewhere for arepas. Or pupusas.

I won't go hungry in the Tampa area, either. Columbia Restaurant is amazing. And Amalie Arena has the only third-floor outdoor beer garden usable in January in the NHL. I'm sold.

But I'm staying close to home for a week. Aren't some of these treats at ShopRite?

Last night I went to the Fillmore in Philadelphia to hear Omar Apollo.

I'd often read about him in the gay press - he is openly out - but I knew nothing of his music. But I had nothing to do, and Vivid Seats had dropped ticket prices drastically as showtime neared. So I paid $21 and went to town.

I liked him! He sings in English and Spanish, is proud of his Mexican heritage, but was born and raised in Indiana. (I Googled.)

As always with pop concerts, I was the oldest person there. And almost everyone seemed familiar with the songs and could sing them. They were new to me, but I liked them.

So now I'm playing my way through his catalogue. So far, this is my favorite.

I've left concerts where I didn't know the artist and didn't like the songs. (I'm talking about you, Chris Young.) But no danger of that last night.

Oh he's playing Madison Square Garden in NYC later this week. Tickets start at $111. Yikes.

Good Wednesday evening, Thad! (*8*)

Speaking of Spanish/Cuban food, I'm familiar with El Siboney and Columbia restaurants. I also like La Teresita in Tampa and Don Ramon's in West Palm Beach. We also have Havana in West Palm, but I've only eaten there once since it's so popular there's usually a long wait time for a table. There actually is a Portuguese restaurant only a couple of miles from my house, but I haven't been there yet.

I hadn't heard of Omar Apollo, but the song you posted sounds pretty good, not to mention he's easy on the eyes.

I hope you enjoyed the Flyers hockey game, though I didn't hear the score. Hope you had a good time.

Tuesday's game ended with a 2-0 Flyers win!

I'm going to Thursday's game against the Edmonton Oilers as well. I'm wearing my vintage late-1990s Oilers jersey, with the copper accents they no longer use. (Those were lean years for the Oilers, after the five Stanley Cup wins between 1984 and 1990.)

Well, thanks!

I'm back from the Flyers-Oilers game, which the Flyers won 4-1. Maybe I shouldn't have worn my Oilers jersey.

But I'm fine with the Flyers winning. Cam Atkinson, who was out with injury most of last season, scored twice last night and I'm especially fine with that.

Friday will probably be a very ordinary day for me. The highlight will probably be a trip to the dollar store. Wow!

I went to Dollar General, which isn't quite a true dollar store but had the bargain toilet paper and tissues I like. They're more convenient for me, too.

Tomorrow? Nothing on the agenda.
