Thad's Hockey Corner

I don't like talking much about hockey in the offseason.

BUT I bought my first ticket for next season.

I'll see the Winnipeg Jets in Dallas Thursday evening, November 21.

Nice! Now that the NFL is getting ready to kickoff tonite, I know the NHL can't be far behind. I'll be ready!

Yes. The Tampa Bay Lightning first pre season game is Sept 17th vs Carolina!..|

And the season has started!

I'm going to Brooklyn this Tuesday to see the Edmonton Oilers play the Islanders. Poor Oilers...despite constant high draft picks and Connor McDavid they never seem to get it together. I'm NOT a fan of new Islander goalie Varlamov and expect a decline from this year's Islanders. Unless they play Thomas Greiss all the time.

Someone should pay attention to what I write! Last night Varlamov gave up 4 goals and was pulled halfway thru the 5-2 Oilers win.

James Neal, a longtime favorite of mine, had his first 4-goal game! He's new to the Oilers and it sure seems like a good fit. He set a new Oilers record with 6 goals in the first 3 games this season. No previous Oilers sniper - not Smyth, Kurri, Messier, or even Gretzky - has done this.

Tonight I saw the Flyers shut out the Devils, 4-0, on TV. I've been telling people the Flyers will be good this season since almost nobody is expecting very much of them. They're 2-0 now and go off on a Western trip.

I'll be by the TV tonight. NBCSN is airing the Lightning-Canadiens game, and NBC Sports Philadelphia will air the Flyers-Flames game.

I'm watching MSNBC's coverage of the Penguins-Lightning game. And wishing I was there in Tampa, even though it was a really nice fall day here.

I stayed awake to watch the Flyers' 4-1 win over the BlackHawks on TV last night. And the Flyers had two goals disallowed, to boot.

I'm headed to work early. And i'm tired. It was worth it.

The Kings are not looking too good! Looks like a long season for Jonathan Quick, Drew Doughty, Alec Martinez, etc...

Well, the Sharks are off to a bad start too.
I don't like them even if I am going to see them at home this month. It's that bucket list thing. At the end of this month I'll have seen games in every NHL city except Vegas.

I'm watching the Flyers-Canadiens game on TV. It's tied 2-2 in the 3rd.

Remember when I saw the Islanders over a month ago? That's the last time they lost in regulation. They were trailing the Flyers, 0-3, in the third period last night and came back to tie, go through overtime, and win in a shootout.

I'll see the Islanders again next Saturday...in San Jose. I hope their winning ways continue.

I was at American Airlines Center last night and saw an exciting 5-3 win by the Dallas Stars over the Winnipeg Jets.

The Stars got a 3-0 lead. Two of the goals were of the "What was that?" variety. You know, an odd bounce or the goalie not paying attention. (The first goal was just a really nice play.) But the Jets tied it up and it fell to Stars captain Jamie Benn to score a beautiful goal with under five minutes left. An empty-net goal completed the game.

I'd forgotten how much I liked American Airlines Arena. Good sightlines and just enough non-game nonsense.

The Stars have been underachievers. That should change. John Stevens is now their assistant coach. He knows how to win, with Stanley Cup rings from LA and the Calder Cup in 2005 when it was the most prestigious prize in pro hockey that year. (Remember that disgrace?)

For me, it's on to San Jose and a visit from the hot Islanders. They're on a team record point streak and I hope it continues.

Hello from San Jose! It was a hockey doubleheader for me today. The AHL San Jose Barracuda (yes, the Sharks' farm team, who play in the same building) had an afternoon game against the Colorado Eagles. The Sharks hosted the Islanders at 7:30.

For the Barracuda, the upper deck and part of one end are curtained off to create the impression of a larger crowd. Didn't really work. Despite very reasonable ticket prices and family-friendliness galore, there weren't that many people there. Rather a shame, because the hockey was exciting. The Barracuda built a 6-0 lead: the game ended 6-2. Either the power plays were superb or neither team could kill penalties at all. I met Frenzy, their mascot, and liked him. (I did not meet S.J. Shsrkie, the Sharks' mascot, but Gritty doesn't like him so I did not seek him out.)

The upstairs was open and the place fairly packed for the nightcap. Penalty killing was much in evidence. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, so the Islanders' record point streak stays alive...but the Sharks scored in overtime to win 2-1.

Compared to Dallas, SAP Center at San Jose seems plainer but is a good arena.

I still hate the Sharks.

On to Arizona for a game Wednesday.

That's great you are visiting different NHL arenas! I remember when the Sharks played their home games at the old Cow Palace (south of San Francisco). I grew up watching the Oakland/California Golden Seals. The Seals played their home games at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Arena. Right across from the Oakland Coliseum (home of the Oakland Athletics). The Raiders are relocating to Las Vegas next season.

I have never been to the SAP Center in San Jose. When the Seals left the Bay Area in 1976, they relocated to Cleveland. At that point, I followed the Los Angeles Kings. In those days, the Kings played at the Great Western Forum, in Inglewood, CA. While attending college, we attended numerous Kings' games. Marcel Dionne was the main star. Great player, but the Kings never had great teams, until Wayne Gretzky arrived in a trade in 1988.

I remember the Forum in Inglewood. I did see two games there. And I went to Staples Center after my TV taping in January 2002.

The Sharks are visiting the Kings tonight, but my hotel Direct TV doesn't carry NBC Sports California. I'd never get Direct TV; I am happy with RCN cable at home.

I just saw the Arizona Coyotes beat the Anaheim Ducks in a shootout. It was a fairly exciting game, but the Ducks seemed to control most of the action. Both goalies were good. I think Darcy Kuemper, the Coyotes goalie who I like, won the game for them.

Gila River Arena feels big. It's not very distinctive but does seem to magnify drama. If the season ended today the Coyotes would make the playoffs.

OK, here's proof I'm hockey-mad.
I'm leaving Phoenix in a few hours. I decided to make a detour to Buffalo to see a Sabres game.

I like Buffalo and haven't been there in years. Good enough reason.

They're playing the Devils Dec. 2.

You'll have a whole week-end in Buffalo. Yeah, if your reasons are good enough for you then they are good enough. Have a great time.
