  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

"That's so gay" Commercial.

The GLBTQ group that I used to be a part of had frequent discussions on this topic. I use to have no objection to the expression, even used it myself. But when you sit down and really think about what you're saying.... It's volatile, rude, and thoughtless. And I was really surprised when I saw how much it hurts some people. For some of those kids, it really cut deep.

I've seen a few get annoyed by 'breeder,' but you're right. 'That's so straight' would fly right over his head.

That's what I use to counter their "that's so gay". They seem to get the picture once I've said it.

This thread just gets my ragheads in a twist....some people pretend to be

so catholic in their tastes....makes me go all holy roller but that is so

baptist I just 'cant' keep it st8 what pew I'm supposed to sit in on the banks

of the Mississippi.

But, like a few very ugly sayings and words, it could hang around for centuries.

I quite agree. I am from the beautiful island of Newfoundland and back in the 40's the despicable and much hated "Newfie" word was born. This is 2011 and it is still predominant as a means to belittle the people of my home. Some may think it to be cute and adorable while others use it as a means of insult and incapability of intellect. If we are not careful the cute little
"That's so gay" can go just as far if indeed not further. I've never taken some one down when I hear it here in Ontario but I give a look. They get the point!

I don't stop people from saying it, because the vast majority don't even realize what they are saying, and aren't saying it as in insult. A survey done at my school a while back found that 99% of the school wanted gay marriage to pass, yet almost all of them used "That's so gay". When you come out of the blue and attack them for using it though, that just makes them think that gay people are touchy. Congratulations, now they don't say the phrase anymore, but they have a negative stereotype about us! Yaaaaaayyy!!!

JaZus Margo............

That point of view is so Tiberon.

I don't know. You know, 'lame' as a description of people has largely passed out of my vocabulary. I generally say, "he has trouble walking" or something like that. I have come to use 'lame' only to refer to ideas or expressions. I don't know that that makes it any better.

I still think 'lame' as an analogy for inadequate thought or expression is a more direct analogy than 'gay' is for second-rate. In the former case, the "lame" brain is said to be impaired so that it doesn't work like most people's in the same way that a "lame" person's legs keep him from getting around as easily. I can't think of a good reason to say that "gay" people are second-rate.

But that's the point. "That's so gay" isn't SUPPOSED to be a direct analogy. When someone says "That's so gay" they're not saying "That little porcelain chef over there is so very homosexual, and as such is therefore inferior"

And you've also proven my point (which I make in every thread that follows this convoluted topic) in your first paragraph. Maybe one day, thanks to "that's so gay" Gay as a description for a person will pass out of everyone's vocabulary. You have come to use lame only for ideas and expressions, and when referring to those who are "properly" lame, you don't apply the word. Is that not what the MAJORITY of people (see: Teenagers) using the term "That's so gay" are doing? They are applying it to ideas and expressions, and sometimes things. They use an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT definition of the word gay when referring to homosexuals, and when they WANT to be derogatory they throw words like "queer ass mother-fucker" "Faggot" "sissy" "Ass-Pirate" and such into the mix.

This is because when someone self identifies as gay (which we do when we come out of the closet) its kind of hard to say "Haha you're gay" Because they know. They're the ones who told everyone. If it is not an insult that can be applied TO THE DEMOGRAPHIC IT IS SUPPOSED TO OFFEND, I don't see how it can be offensive in any way.

I'd rather people say it in my presence then NOT because they know I'm gay.

Still I think it's rather tacky to use. I remember for a while in my school it was popular to say something was "Mexican" to mean dumb or stupid.
Never really understood the logic there #-o

This thread is just getting to be

Too Starcrasher.

(!):-<*wave*:-<(!)

i tried but yo dog is really a bitch and

the sistah wouldn't hole still long enuf.

..|:badgrin::badgrin:

Even though people may not mean to insult anyone, they are. Otherwise, why use the word gay at all? Why not just say stupid? However, it is pretty clear who is on top.

"So are we cool?" "Yeah, we're straight."
"I hate this class. "Yeah it is so gay."

Of course people do not mean 'this class is so sleeping with the same sex' and some people may not mean to be insult anyone, but they are. I'm not going to tell people to stop, and I'm not personally offended. I just think it is dumb of people so say 'that's so gay.' It makes no sense and only furthers heterosexual normality.

Its a phrase meaning stupid in its meaning, no hidden agenda behind the phrase, no intent to slur. If the use of the phrase was used to denote something 'awesome' or 'cool' there wouldn't be a problem would there, its just because it is a phrase used to denounce something (not someones) that is percieved as negative that really bothers some people.

What's your point with the bolded text?

As for my feelings, I don't like the phrase and I think the commercial is decent.

Which is why, when something is being described as stupid, people don't call it gay, they call it, 'that's so gay'. They are using a phrase, not a dictionary definition of a key word within it.

Not where I'm from. People say 'that's gay,' 'how gay,' or 'wow you're gay' over and over. Do you think it is meant to be a compliment? It is no different than 'grow some balls' or 'stop being a pussy.' I think you aren't looking deep enough. There is a reason why these words are chosen. No one is going to say 'grow a pussy' now are they? And no one is going to say 'I had the best day ever. It was so gay' to mean gay=something positive.

Once upon a time gay meant happy..I think it is "interesting" how means change...for better or for worse

You guys should watch the UK film, "Fit". It's very good. I don't find it very offensive. But I just find it is insensitive and nonsensical. Just like people saying "ret@rded".

Phuck if I know how affluent white 30 something white Canadian boys think.

wealthy, white Californians talk.

My point is that the origins of this phrase is driving offence where there isn't actually any to be taken in its contemporary use.

If no offense was meant why did they choose the word gay instead of some other word like that's so wood or something?
