"That's so gay" Commercial.

That Makes 3 of us I think.....and counting.

Queer, faggot, puff, shitstabber, all obviously meant to offend, this phrase is ultimately harmless, if you put 2 and 2 together like a previous poster mentioned, you would be coming out with 3 or 5 if you felt you were being victimised in any way because of this phrase. Its political correctness gone mad again.

Harmless? What planet are you on buddy? So the words used in films for decades to demean people is harmless?
Rev. Phelps would love you!

Well "society" in Canada doesn't view us negatively. Gay Marriage has been allowed in Ontario since 2003, and nationwide since 2005. Gays in the military have been allowed since 1992. In 1986 sexual orientation was added to the Ontario Human Rights Code as prohibited ground for discrimination, and to the federal list in 1996.

I live in Ontario, the quickest of our provinces to adopt gay rights. Everyone I meet (even in the small town(s) I used to live in) has no problem with me being gay and sees it as a non-issue. Many schools around where I grew up even include discussion on sexuality in early Sex-Ed classes as young as grade 6 (sex-ed starts in grade 5).

Yet despite all this "that's so gay" is still used. I have yet to hear a single person use it towards an actual gay person. Teenagers use it on each other yes, but when one of them does/wears/says something stereotypically gay, by saying "that's so gay" which in and of itself is somewhat true based on what the media shows people "gay" is, making its use on people (at least where I'm from) even more harmless than its use on objects.

I also disagree with your point that they were likely saying the porcelain chef LOOKED gay. No offence but thats kind of ridiculous.

And as I've stated (ad nauseum) the reason I see sissy as offensive and gay as not, is because sissy is used offensively TOWARD gay people, where gay is not (save for your experience in hearing it used as such, but where I'm from I've never heard that)

As far as stereotype that's where all insults/derogatory terms come from. We use stereotypes to insult a demographic because we're too lazy to think of insults for each individual.

And no, in my posts sissy is being used with one definition "1. an effeminate boy or man" whereas gay has the double-meaning of "homosexual", or "stupid"

And if society didn't look negatively on those who were "lame" once upon a time that word would have never became a synonym for stupid. But we seem to be okay with this one for some strange reason.

But seeing as there's clearly no changing anyone's mind, if you want to think "that's so gay " is homophobic go ahead. I'll look at gay bashings, executions and imprisonment in the middle east, and USA's clear lack of equality rights for gays as homophobia. Too bad nobody makes commercials about those.

Ta-ta:wave:

Just saw this commercial, thought I would post it to see what you guys think. Apparently there are a few different ones, but this is the only one I've seen on TV. Also, do you find the phrase "Thats so gay" offensive?

I'm not politically correct so I don't like to control people's language. But I get to then say, "No, that's more niggerish than gay." or any custom-tailored slur.

I remember when I was trying to help counsel this kid, he was telling me about when he was ready and willing to come out to his best friend. They were walking home together from school, talking about whatever- school, friends, girls, etc.

Then the straight buddy starts talking about a teacher who neither of them liked very much. The straight friend started going on about how, "Mr. X is so fucking gay. Fuck! I hate him. Hate his gay ass."

Mr. X was not gay to the knowledge of either kid. But what that said to the gay youth was that his friend associated gay with hate and gay with bad people. There was no mistaking it for gay in the happy sense. The origin of the term did not matter. It mattered in the context of the day. The youth didn't come out to his friend. How could he?

I've heard dozens of stories like this one. And if it hurts my gay brothers and sisters it hurts me. So it doesn't matter that I had never been offended by the term before, I am now.

Most of the discussion in this thread is self-centered and theoretical. Only this and a few other posts have actually endeavored to get inside the heads of people negatively impacted by the use of "gay" as a derogatory term.

We all jump fast to condemn bullying, but this use of the word "gay" is just a form of bullying. It's not overt or intentional, but it's still harmful -- call it "negligent bullying", parallel to "negligent homicide": no harm may be meant, but it's still done.

Some in this thread have come up with effective quips for responding to the word's misuse. Others, such as above, have actually shown serious empathy. I suggest we all endeavor to emulate both.

Excellent. Been trying to say as much myself.

I'm gay, so no he wouldn't. And you are missing the point that i have been making, Musik2400 gets it. The phrase is not used EVER to demean people, it is used against inanimate objects or phrases or experiences to describe stupid, or unfair.

If the word gay in future dictionaries is used to define something stupid, i don't care and have no valid reason to care. It already traditionally means happy, yet that word is likely to phase out for the confusion arising when someone says 'i'm so gay right now' etc. Meanings of words and in this case phrase change over time. It will probably dissappear soon enough anyway.

The phrase has no ill intent, its usage being bothersome to some is unnecessary, and clearly as the thread demonstrates, its no big deal to even gay people.
There are bigger things in a short life to worry about than this phrase.

this thread represent whole planet of GAY FOLK< or da real ones????

how many is a post this thread ans how many gay?

how many live gay all life? not day dream on internet?

And people who smoke don't do it with ill intent, either.

Secondhand smoke still kills.

secondhand smoke ans

dead folk dat connection?

like alive then dead cause some turds of humans go figure hey da just public shit ya can fuck up ans POOF OUT?

love internet it sooooo educate

Secondhand smoke would however be the 'sticks and stones' in that old phrase.

This is a phrase with no malice, where its usage is understood (and most clearly by the youth of today) to be disconnected to homosexual people. Its developed a new meaning and some people don't like its usage to mean stupid because the word stupid is negative and thus it means that gay people are stupid....that's an extreme way of looking at the phrase imo.

Not worth getting upset about.

Really?

It's negligent bullying. Just because it may slide off most gay kids doesn't justify it -- that's like saying bullying is okay as long as it doesn't hurt very many people.

I said it before and I'll say it again, if a word or expression truly hurts a group of people, why would you want to say it or defend it's usage? I mean, fack.

YEA dat kool!

FARRRRRRK UM

It doesn't hurt a group of people, it hurts 'some' members of that group. Those who i would consider to be too sensitive.

A homophobic slur, which is meant to be offensive, naturally will be to the whole 'group'. But this phrase doesn't have that intent to be a slur or offensive and so accordingly there is a split between the 'group' about its significance.

We are not all like minded just because we share the same sexual preference.
The more integrated the gay community becomes, the more you see the differences between gay people, no longer is there a 'we must stick together' attitude but an evident acknowledgement that gay people are indeed no different to straights, we all see things differently. Some people will take a conservative attitude about this phrase, some will take a liberal view and various degrees in between and to the extremes.

The best objectives of gay rights groups are to tackle issues which can be universally agreed upon by the group as a whole. Tackling this phrase just seems like the campaign group or whatever behind the ads are looking for something to occupy time.

ya gons say da ( I ) word ooooooooh

gay rights groups? ans the group?

Yes, it hurts a small portion.

You know who falls into the group "too sensitive"? The kids who kill themselves because they can't handle the pain of being gay.

This adds to their pain. Seeing these commercials can be a help to them just like the whole "it gets better" campaign.

Having been in that particular psychic space, I can tell you that your posts would be saying to me, "I don't give a fuck -- if it hurts you, tough; you're on your own, no help from me." But one of those commercials says, "You're not alone. Some of us get it."

It's always, always better to err on the side of helping.

in meantime OY professions ya mind cut ya crap ya just tooo painfuls fa world put up with

guess wha they doinsssssss behinds da walllllllll!!!!!

Or my posts may be seen as tough love. I'm not saying i don't care, but what i am saying is that cotton-balling is not the answer.

I seriously cannot concieve that anyone would kill themselves because this phrase could be a 'straw that broke the camels back'. I attempted suicide myself when i was 16 because i was having difficulty with the gay thing at a time when i was trying to do exams and a family crisis was under way, the pressure was too much. This phrase is hardly adding pressure, its usage has nothing to do with gay in the homosexual person context, its highly unlikely to be a contributing factor in a persons suicide.

I think you're using what would be a rare case scenario to justify the end of a phrase which has nothing specifically to do with a person involved in that case scenario. It has an unwelcome imposition about it and making people who innocently use the phrase feel bad for no good reason, which is illogical when considering that the phrase is not meant to be a slur about homosexuals and yet some people get upset and feel bad about it for no good reason. Its a bit of a hypocricy really.

People need to be able to rationalise a little better instead of taking the extreme POV sometimes.

folk wanna WIN argument ! over da dead ans diein ans create more it
