Because they don't like gay people, kinda like a lot of Christians. Seems to me the problem is as much religious as cultural. But that certainly doesn't mean that they won't ever, ever, ever get over it. Christians liked to burn witches for quite a few centuries.

Anyway, it's perfectly possible to be technologically sophisticated and even western in origin and still be murdering fucks, anyone care to toss in that famous example.

For the same reason that bashers get off scott free over here. Religious prohibitions are huge contributors to the climate causing violence against gay people the world over.
 
I don't think that any of us would like to live under repressive regimes, but to then go on to say that they will never change is a bit much.

None of us would have liked to be a jew in Nazi Germany either (yes, I said it, but the example fits.)
