It isn't phantom retribution. This is you looking at it as if the successful black people care enough to actively be trying to get back at whitey.

I grew up a poor black man, but my aunts and uncles were actually pretty successful in life. One is a very successful architect who travels from Houston to California on business. I had the privilege at thanksgiving and Christmas to hear them talk, see how they lived. (I was never super close to my family for COMPLETELY different reasons, so I didn't see them a lot a lot despite living in the same city) They simply prefer to live around other black people. It isn't hard in Houston to find little communities of successful black people living together, going about their business. To them, they have the benefit of living in a safe community, while having their children grow up around other black children. They are very ethnocentric, their book shelves are littered with books by black artists and philosophers, histories of Africa etc.

Apollo I'm not claiming no form of nonwhite prejudice happens. But if we take black people-- who are what, 12% of the population-- and then we take the rich or well off ones who may be in a position to either exercise power or whatever else over others-- furthering the small number we're talking about-- I don't think we can pretend that the prejudice and the preferences go equally every which way, including against whites and to their detriment.

Huh? When did I explicitly say that? I have firsthand experience with white privilege. I listened when my uncle would talk about pretty much being harrassed by white people in his neighborhood. But he didn't let it get him down, he made something of himself in life and didn't let them get him down or deter him from making any changes he wanted to his own house. Especially when he was an architect, and his son (my cousin) is a contractor. He blamed white people for a lot of pitfalls of black people in American society, but he didn't let it destroy his will to be successful and work for what he believed what his right to have.

This is a man in his 70's who was in his teens when Dr. King was marching on Washington. My mom was a teen as well during that time, but she had less motivation than he did to make something of herself. He has grown up seeing the changes America has gone through since the time of segregation.

Uh, that is not first-hand experience because it was your uncle whom experienced it directly not you. That is second-hand exposure via being told of experiences and stories from someone else's point-of-view...

i respect your opinion but you are living under a rock if you think that racism no longer exists in american society where it doesn't have an effect on people's lives. you simply cannot go "fuck this shit" like your uncle does if the police pull you over ready to harass you because you're driving while black in a neighborhood which is predominantly white.

the main point is you cannot run from it. even when you do try to avoid it as long as you have to deal with people and live in the world, it will find you. that's just the way it is. you can say whatever you want to say but you're black and living in america, even though you think it doesn't matter, it does.

even if you don't drive or whatever, you don't even need to experience it firsthand to know what's going on. look @ the news.

as for some of my personal experiences, just let's say that i've seen and know enough to know that i have every right to feel about the police the way that i do. yeah, there's some cool cops and there's some bad ones but being that they all wear the same uniform. so you will never know who is who until you see them do their job.

and it's not entirely a race thing because there's plenty of black cops that are assholes too.

meant to say that there's plenty of black cops that are assholes too. the funny thing is that they're usually assholes towards other black people. what's even ironic is that even with a badge, that doesn't entirely mean that the black police officer is immune from facing the same fate by his own police department that has happened to black men at the hands of the police. there's been plenty of black cops that have been gunned down by "friendly fire" from their fellow officers because they were mistaken as criminals. sad but very true.

Not gonna lie, even though I grew up poor, I distanced myself from the toxic people who lived around me. I used my friends address to go to a better school in a nice part of town. I got up early as fuck and rode the bus for about a hour and a half to get to school. Then I had to wait maybe another 1 or so for school to start (Houston public transportation SUCKS). 2 - 3 hour bus ride at the end of the day. Never seen my mom get pulled over. Going through well off areas, driving around a giant city with tons of police officers. I never get pulled over, driving through Los Angelos in the nice areas, cause I like to party in the nice areas

Same in San Diego. I like to speed too, and I am still a new driver so I swerve and weeve like a teenager. Nothing.

You can call me naive, you can say I don't see what you see. But I am a black man, who is living my life everyday. I do see "white privilege" and I still see the quiet racism around me. My friend married a white girl and she mentioned all the looks they get. He ignores them, and moves on with his life. I do the same. If you want to hold me back, you better kill my ass.

This shit is so tired on this board. Why do you focus on it so much? Why don't you just try and make something of yourself and put up the middle finger to white privilege?
