The British burned down Washington D.C.???? Exactly 200 years ago today????

I live in England, so don't have a vote. I doubt that CG does either now he's moved to Brighton.

That is why I said that you "would go" "and...": to help, as an Englishman, let Scotters go get themselves lost away from England... like those Spaniards who who vote for Catalan people go get fucked as independent for Spain.

History of the U.S. is badly taught but every one knows this!

History, period, is badly taught. I would love to, as an educator, revamp the entire school curriculum for Social Studies. Unfortunately, it is not considered as critical a subject as Mathematics and Language Arts (which are tested by most American states annually, in each grade level), and therefore, often falls to the wayside (or is ignored) in order to allow more time to prepare students for the state examinations (which are not only tied to student performance, but also to teacher evaluation).

The best history teacher I ever had said it simply, "Until 1781, British History is American History." That was when the last major battle of the Revolutionary War was fought (Battle of Yorktown) and the last of the 13 states (Maryland) ratified The Articles of Confederation.

Many teachers (this teacher, included) sneak history in through the "back door", by teaching reading and writing using nonfiction history articles and historical fiction to compensate for the lack formal history instruction in our curricula.

"Until 1781, British History is American History."

What? From when on "until 1781"?

I knew from 1066 to 1763 British History was French History but... American?! EVER?!!

Oh... silly me... silly copulative sentences... yeah, that is rightly expressed that way.
So I should have written: "from 1066 to 1763, French History is British History".

And you might have been correct had the Normans who invaded England in 1066 actually been French.

And they didn't speak French either: that's why the English of 2014 is closer to the language of the Beowulf than to French.

Are you referring to the old myths/claims of Viking ancestry?

Otherwise, the British would have to give up the logic according to which, had they lost the Battle of Hastings to the French, today they would be speaking a sort of French pidgin, and London would sport, like Paris, a 1,000 ft. pyramidal tower.

1066 is the only date I remember with no effort. All the others I have to concentrate on to find them; or just Google.

It's relatively similar to 666 which, working for Madame, is a number you have very much present every day of your working life.

And the Stuarts Scottish and the Hanoverians German.

I am part Italian if any one is interested.

I certainly didn't know about the burning of the "White House". I am beginning to think that my education was severely lacking in some spheres.

From my understanding, the War of 1812 is typically viewed by British historians as a footnote to the Napelonic Wars, which is completely inaccurate.
