Dewey didn't beat Truman.
America's failures are against our former stature. We still drive the economy that pipes the tune for much of the world economically. Japan was touted as the ascendant country before the marbles stopped rolling during the tech boom. China is a juggernaut, but her economic policies have left her dependent upon her own low wage base. Her own workers have begun to balk at the very wage that made them so attractive to the West.
Be sure of it, the US buying economy controls much of the world's markets from sheer spending power with a large population. India and China have vast populations, but not vast populations with large expendable income.
Economically, militarily, and even culturally, the US remains in a very powerful position. Those clucking their tongues do so without addressing the full spectrum of influence that constitutes a nation's status.
This may not be "The American Century," but don't expect to see us in hobo clothes anytime soon.

^ Very true.
The next world war will be between the West and muslim-fundamentalist countries. Like the UK before, the USA will win the war and lose the peace, which will be won by the old democracies of the West and the new, future liberal democracies of the East.
