The Dalai Lama is Not Gay-Friendly

^ Exactly. It's all a load of old bollocks anyway religion. It should either be one rule for all or non at all. Not "oh gays can't have penetrative sex because they can't reproduce but it's ok to have recreational sex if you slip on a condom on if you're straight." Seriously who can listen to religious leaders when they spout a load of hypocritical non sense?

He's not anti-gay at all. He's anti the sex act because of his belief. Is that all gay is? A cock up the arse?

He's also against hetro oral sex, I notice that didn't get much airplay.

It always amuses me how straight people try to say fags are disgusting for fucking each other in the ass, but when I point out to them that straight people invented anal, and that blowjobs are also considered sodomy, they always say something like "Well. . .yeah. . .I guess you're right. . .but at least it's with a woman!"

/facepalm

Most religions are anti-sex except for very specific purposes (like procreation) for the simple reason that sex is so lovely that it can draw people away from the narrow confines of their church's teaching. And this anti-sex stance suits most churches as it provides a powerful means of keeping their adherents in line.

I'm not one of the Dalai Lama's cheer squad, and quite frankly his views have about as much relevance and sense as the Pope's. On matters of sex, both men should have the humility and good sense to shut up.

What amazes me is the tremendous concern and attention brought to the debate about what Mr. Lama said vs. what Mr. Buddha may have thought on the subject. Knowing either of those things doesn't really matter, as we are all still on the hook for figuring it out ourselves.

We werent put on earth as a test of will power we were put on earth to test our abilities as a race and as individuals these religious zealots need to realize this. enjoy the physical world while there is one and get over it

It hardly comes as a big surprise. What is more difficult to find is a religion which actively accepts and welcomes gays. I can think only of Creation Spirituality - which is not a religion but which identifies a mystical tradition in all the world's religions, arguing that there is no monopoly on 'truth and that all religions are simply attempts - and partial ones - at fathoming the unfathomable.
Creation is seen as an ongoing process and guys have a vital role to play in that.

It's DL's opinion.Doesn't reflect buddha's teaching. You wouldn't find homosexuality being condemned to hell in scriptures. That would be against its base premises it built upon - metta otherwise.

I like this article on the issue better:

by Steve Peskind

I do as well. thank you for posting it.

"When science points to or proves a truth contrary to Buddhist teaching, then Buddhist teaching must change," he said as we were leaving his suite, "Changing Buddhist traditions will be much harder than advocating for your human rights."

well as hitchens say,
"religion poisons everything" !!!

Religion = food

People should treat all religions like food.
You eat the parts you want to eat and throw the parts you don't want in the rubbish bin.

I agree with you as long as they realize 2 things:
  • Aunt Jemima isn't really the one who makes their pancakes
  • It was never such a decent believable story anyway.

Once people know that, then they can treat their religions like food and get a good meal out of them.

can someone tell me,

has anyone said Religion = Food before ? !oops!

any kind of sex is wrong in Buddhist teaching.

I'm sorry, but that simply isn't true. Monastics in most Buddhist traditions are expected to be celibate as long as they remain monastics. However, unlike Catholic monasticism, leaving the monastic state in Buddhism is easy and no one will think the worse of you for it. The post about sexual misconduct above pretty much sums up the Buddhist attitude.

Are there Buddhists who think differently? Sure. The Dalai Lama is one of them. He represents one sect (the Gelugpa) in one school (Vajrayana) of Buddhist. He doesn't get to set the limits of the Dharma for all Buddhists, and he would be the first to admit that he doesn't. Pema Chodron, another Tibetan teacher, is thoroughly pro-gay, as is Vietnamese Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh and mot American Buddhist teachers.

'The Dalai Lama is Not Gay-Friendly'? What a co-incidence, I'm not Dalai-Lama-friendly.

:-) I'm sure he will be crushed.

He has some intelligent things to say on some things. He is actually a very smart man. But on the subject of sex, as someone else said above, he and the other Holiness (the pope) should have the humility and good sense to shut up. Ain't gonna happen, though.

any kind of sex is wrong in buddhist teaching.

This is so wrong Buddha himself laughed into tears.

Buddhist teaching states sex is one of the 'suffering' which must be expurgated in order to reach Nirvana. But it never states it is sinful; the sermon only advises to avoid doing it.

Nor does Buddhist teaching prohibits homosexuality. In fact, it is never mentioned in any.

The conclusion: in origin, Buddhists are neutral toward homosexuality. It is the religious Buddhist people who invent their own definitions.
