The Death List 2023

Welp Jerry...thanks for helping to make the US the shrieking trash show that it has become.

You're not wrong, but ...

... Gee, thanks, neighbor!

I was once visiting a beau in Montreal who had Sally Jessy Raphael on the TV (from the station from Plattsburgh, NY) one day. I made a face; he made one back at me.
At the sleazy low point of the show, I turned to him and said, "I hope you're proud of yourself." He said, "I love American trash TV. It makes me proud to be Canadian."

Carol Bryant Donham.

The woman whose lies as a girl got Emmett Till lynched in 1955 for lying and saying he whistled at her, is dead at the age of 88.

Hopefully she has an eternity in Hell.

Her husband and her brother-in-law unquestionably were guilty of murder. And that it was a racist lynching is undebatable.

But exactly what is she supposed to have done to participate? According to articles on the crime, the victim did in fact make a wolf whistle, and possibly made remarks, during his purchase of goods in the commissary. This is testified to by the victim's cousin, who was present at the time, and is yet living. The woman allegedly went for a pistol in a fit of anger at the effrontery in the Jim Crow South. She later calmed down and made her sister-in-law not tell the two husbands of the event, as they were out of town when it happened and the woman clearly understood what conveying the event's details would precipitate. According to an article, one of the sister-in-law's children told the men what had happened when they returned.

So, if the description is correct, she tried to avoid the lynching, but failed. In that era, it made no difference whatsoever whether Till made comments and whistled, or merely whistled. Any sexual overture at the time in the South would have likely resulted in a lynching.

If the suggestion is that the Donham was actively involved in going to get Till and hanging him or beating him, that would have very much been implausible at the time, as it wasn't in keeping with the roles of men and women in that day.

None of that to take away from the murder. Till made a terrible mistake in bucking the code at the time, but the code was horrendous and murderous and wrong, but it was the status quo. He was young and foolish and, like many a teen, made a mistake that cost him his life. Jim Crow needed to end, and this injustice helped bring that about, even if he nor his family ever got justice. What he did was not a crime, only a social taboo transgression. He didn't deserve to die for it.

But, can't find where she actively attempted to lynch him or get him lynched.

^ The last time I saw him perform live was a few years ago in Ottawa during a Canada Day (July 1) celebration. He didn't look well then. He still sounded great though. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did. No one has even come close to taking his place in history.

Oh, I wasn't ready for that.

Mr. Lightfoot, we live in your debt.

😭
