For anyone under 65, this is Cass Elliot, pop and folk singer, who died at age 32 of a heart attack.

She was a lead singer in the Mamas & the Papas, and was really overweight at that time, not well shown in the pic.

In interviews, and in her TV shows and appearances, her humor shone. She actually began her career as an actress, but moved into singing.

The group was very popular, and she particularly so, and a commercial hit.

This is a pic of her in performance:

Curiously, the Wikipedia makes no mention of "Get It Together," a midday Saturday pop music TV show Cass Elliot hosted.

Antonia "Tonke" Dragt, children's author, aged 93.

She had this anthology of stories called Water Is Gevaarlijk (Water Is Dangerous) that left a deep impression on me. It had Old Man Willow from Tolkien in it, if memory serves.

Give gen Xers a little credit. Our moms and dads were listening to that.

It's not a question of if you could know who she was, but that some likely would not.

I myself saw her on television as a kid and barely could recognize her in that carefully staged photo.

It seems kind of unfair to have a Death List post with the assumption people will recognize a face only.

Yup. I'm 45, and I recognized her immediately.

But with every passing year, you and I and rareboy and Alistair are increasingly fewer than those who are culturally ignorant. And for the dozens who read the post without a name and didn't recognize her, they shrugged and moved on without advertizing their ignorance.

My co-worker is 33 and bright, but he not only looks up words I use, but also cultural references for things we take for granted.

I thtink it is a product of the information Luddites avoiding television and the news. In his particular case, he's bragged about having been home schooled, and later in public school, not wanting to take the sex ed class that was a required part of the high school curriculum. His parents registered an objection and he was not made to attend it. He was compelled to write a paper on any topic he chose in lieu.

He's married with three kids and has them in his (Catholic) churches primary school.

When discussing almost anything, it's like walking on broken glass, as you can tell he's anti-vax, etc. I'm doing my best to just be a mentor and friend in order to dispel some of what he believes, by example, just as I did with the Mormons. If it doesn't work, I did try to make one community. I estimate 75-80% of my co-workers are pro-Trump, but a much smaller number anti-gay.
