The expanding Israel-Hamas war

Today's Live Map indicates diminished UDF control over a number of areas in north and central Gaza.

Control of the coast will be essential...as will dividing Gaza into smaller and smaller communities...it almost seems to suggest that Israel has a long way to go to eliminate the underground network between different zones.

The ICJ has found some of the claims in South Africa's case against Israel plausible. However, in the have it all ways approach, they have just told Israel...'Don't do genocide.'

Given that Hamas’s stated goal is the elimination of the state of Israel I’m glad the International Court only did what they did, had they done more it would have required them to give Hamas a pass for their actions which is absurd.

Hamas may be bad at actually fighting but they know human emotions and how to manipulate them.

So very sad to pull this forward...because it shows the indifference of the west to this war.

To me it looks like a stalemate or a campaign of grinding attitrition.

Palestinian deaths are over 31,000.

Israel doesn't seem to have gained control.

Just ruzzia having fun with a distraction from Ukraine.

The problem is politics around the world. Hamas are firing missiles, they are pissing off Israel.... what do they expect? however, Hamas is backed by other countries which you don't want to piss off. So what do you do? tell Israel to stop, this is fab, until Hamas fires more missiles into Israel or Hamas does not go to any " peace " meetings. It's a complex mess but has been going on on whatever scale for years . What's the answer , well that will never happen ... isreal wont turn around under any government and hug an arab , the same with the other side ... sad , but the world needs to look at the context not what the media want you to think ...

Enlighten me which country is supporting Hamas who I wouldn’t want to piss off?

Once the Israelis are done in Gaza and domestic politics are back in vogue I think the secular and the orthodox will square off as to what the future of Israel will look like. The earlier protests over the judiciary were just a warm up as the orthodox are running this war and if the secular tech sector takes a hit after the war the value Israel has to the Saudi’s will be significantly reduced. It’s the combo of Israeli technology and Saudi money which can remake the Middle East and offer a brighter economic future for those who want it as opposed to religious dictators and stagnant economic growth which is what Iran is offering. It’s easy to see why they worry in Tehran.

MBS is a guy I wouldn’t want to cross but among world leaders he is one of the few with a positive vision for the future of his country.

Is it indifference or twice-bitten? The intractable conflict in the Levant is the tar-baby of all tar-babies. We have zero chance of a resolution.

Additionally, the West hasn't remained indifferent, but complicit, particularly the U.S.

I'm not versed on who, if any of the Western Powers, have introduced resolutions in the UN Assembly or their own national assemblies, condemning Hamas or Israel.

To me it looks like a stalemate or a campaign of grinding attitrition.

It looks more like Israel took revenge and had to slow it after razing the homes of millions, due to world outcry. Israel is stuck like a dog breeding a bitch.

That was never their goal. It was always retribution. There is no scenario in which Israel can maintain actual control.

Just ruzzia having fun with a distraction from Ukraine.
Which is entirely Trump's doing. If the GOP had not blocked the aid, there would be no distraction.

Perhaps there is some movement after all.

Chuck Shumer has openly called for new elections in Israel and noted Netanyahu as an obstacle to peace.

Israeli occupation in the strip seems to be diminishing, although air strikes continue.

The EU is also apparently about to place sanctions on Israeli Settlers of the Left Bank.

The kettle appears to be coming off the boil and things going back to same old, same old.

I’m not a lawyer but I do like the idea of swift justice and Netanyahu was indicted in 2019 for corruption and 4+ yrs later there has yet to be a trial.
In this case justice delayed has had a huge impact on an entire country what’s wrong with pursuing the powerful as if they were ordinary? In the US we have Texas AG Ken Paxton indicted in 2015 only going to trial next month and of course our former president. I used to be said it’s only a crime if you get caught, now, for some, not even then.

The really ruthless and powerful know how to evade justice for a lifetime.

Wow. Another "we're ready to quit you" to Netanyahu.

The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution on Monday explicitly calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war after the U.S. declined to exercise its veto power.

Israel responded by canceling a visit this week by Israeli officials and top advisers to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington, adding to the tensions between the two longtime allies amid Israel’s military operations in the Gaza strip.

The passage of the resolution, led and presented by the non-permanent members of the United Nations’ most powerful body, comes after a series of resolutions addressing the Israel-Hamas war failed because of vetoes from the United States, China and Russia because of disagreements over the phrasing of calls for a cease-fire.

Bombing embassies in Damascus, Syria.

Iran has vowed to retaliate after it accused Israel of bombing its embassy complex in Syria on Monday, in a deadly escalation of regional tensions over the war in Gaza that once again appeared to raise the risk of a wider Middle Eastern conflict.

The airstrike destroyed the consulate building in the capital Damascus, killing at least seven officials including Mohammed Reza Zahedi, a top commander in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), and senior commander Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, according to Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

Killing World Central Kitchen volunteers who distribute food.

An Israeli airstrike killed seven aid workers with World Central Kitchen, leading the charity to suspend delivery Tuesday of vital food aid to Gaza, where Israel’s offensive has pushed hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to the brink of starvation.

Cyprus, which has played a key role in trying to establish a sea route to bring food to the territory, said ships that recently arrived were turning back — with some 240 tons of undelivered aid.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that the country’s forces had carried out the “unintended strike” on “innocent people in the Gaza Strip.” He says officials are looking into the strike and would “do everything for this not to happen again.”

Israel will have no friends or allies at all after this conflict at this rate.

They may be down to one.

They were busy last week attacking Seth Rogan for commenting in an interview 3 years ago that he felt he wasn't told the truth about Israel when he was a child. It's to the point that they try to cancel anyone who dares to question their strategy and ethics in their destruction of Gaza.

I think a lot of diaspora Jews have similar feelings.

It must be a moral struggle for those who have for years defended Israel's right to protect itself now faced with nothing more or less than a holocaust in order for Israel to drive the Palestinians out of Gaza.

As I noted last October...there will never be talk of a two state solution, Israel will stake claim to lands in Gaza, squeezing the refugees into smaller and smaller areas.

Israel is literally doing the same thing in Gaza as Rzzzia was doing in Ukraine. Annihilation and eviction.

On the TV Israel is apologizing for killing those aid workers. I suspect however that they knew exactly what they were doing, and Bibi did it as deterrence.

Ther are no more excuses left for Israel.

The killing of Zahedi reminds me of when Trump ordered the killing of Soleimani and the Iranians get all huffy and promise retaliation is coming and a price must be paid but all they did was shoot a few missiles at a U.S. base in Iraq, not exactly what you might call a proportional response and here we are again top commander killed and the usual threats from Iran.
Is the entire Middle East filled with nothing but trash talking wannabes whose idea of fighting is sneaking up behind you and whacking you on the head? It’s hard for me to take them seriously.
