The Frank Ocean thread

I wonder who Chelsea Handler was talking about on her show last night??? 50cent maybe :)

He is slaying.

Good for him releasing actual R&B music. God knows that genre hasn't sold a damn thing in the past five years.

Lets see if he can keep this up. Remember, he doesn't have a hit single to help promote himself. All he has is his artistry and album. Clearly it's more than enough for him.

I would agree with you if Maxwell didn't go platinum with his most recent album, BLACKsummer'snight, but he did so R&B is doing alright...

Who the fuck doesnt release an album on Amazon MP3 these days? Only iTunes really?!

Now that "Channel Orange" has arrived on iTunes, that sigh of relief has become a squeal of excitement. And rightly so: over 17 tracks, some of which spin into nothingness and others which poke longingly at the meaning of the universe, "Channel Orange" presents a complex view of American life from the mind of superbly talented writer and vocalist. On "Channel Orange," Ocean is preoccupied with wealth, drugs and sex, but instead of toasting his newfound fame and its spoils, the singer pulls at the thread of their existence, and paws at the idea of love and its place in between all of the shiny material. Happiness is constantly out of Ocean's reach on these songs, whether he's calling unrequited love a "one-man cult" or sitting on his roof, wondering what his next move is when he has everything. There are celebratory moments, but there is a lot of confusion from a young man forging an unfamiliar path.
Frank Ocean, 'Channel Orange': Track-By-Track Review | Billboard.com

I guess I will break down and buy iTunes.

Listened to a couple tracks.

Not here for this at all. Glad people are enjoying it though.

Frank Ocean's "Channel Orange" should debut at No. 2 with perhaps 130,000 -- a bit more than forecasted on Wednesday (July 11). The set was initially exclusively released via the iTunes Store on July 10 -- a week before its advertised street date of July 17. Since it dropped digitally, physical retailers have been instructed by Ocean's label to start selling the CD version as soon as it arrives in stores. In turn, many brick-and-mortar retailers will have the album on its shelves over the weekend.

Guys, you have to give this artist a chance. No, his music won't be for everyone (i happen to love it), but at least listen to these two songs: "Bad Religion" and "Forrest Gump". How often do you hear a song written and sung by a male that you can completely relate to, without the target of the song being "her" or a female?? Oh..NEVER. To know that you can sing along to these songs without having to change "her" to "him" in your head is quite awesome. The first time I heard the Bad Religion song, I thought it was good, so, I played it again. When I listened to the words, I cried. The song is about Frank's love for another man that doesn't feel the same...I'm guessing the guy is straight. This hits home for me, as I have had strong feelings for my straight best friend for some time, now. It's just really comforting. Sure, there are tons of songs about being in love with your best friend, but they are all male to female, or female to male. The song says, "I can never make HIM love me". The rest of the songs on the album reference females, so maybe he's bisexual. I would like this album, regardless, but the two songs I mentioned really put it over the top for me.

The door is open to the closet to see more coming out.

yeah but if you ask me, being openly gay in towards world is taboo.

Did you mean to say "Today's" world?

What does that have to do with anything? The fact is Frank Ocean has had one of the highest rated debut albums of the 21st century and has sold more albums than anyone previously thought

All because he admitted to loving a man.

I guess "Taboo" is now an easy way to make money.

Clearly because you live in an environment where you cannot thrive off of your sexual orientation your view point is skewed.

Unfortunately so is your objectivity.

I hope this Ocean guy gets lots more popular so the gay boys can stop idolising Barbie dolls like Aguilera and Gaga and Britney

yeah, i meant to say today. sorry for that.

and reviews are simply opinions. am i supposed to give a fuck more about an opinion because it's reviewed by someone who works for pitchfolk.com or rollingstone. i can think for myself. i don't need anybody to tell me if an album is hot or not. why would you bring that up as if it's supposed to say anything?

you talk as if there are no hate crimes involving gay people being the victims or homophobia going around. you must be living under a rock. i just read a news article where a young guy in his 20s was assaulted by two women in their 20s for being gay yesterday. they smashed his head open with a liquor bottle. the other day, in fact, either yesterday or on saturday at my job, we had a customer using the f-word to one of his friends for whatever reason in front of everybody. i was like wow. his friend looked upset and tried to play it off. this is right in the state of new jersey too. not the south. i don't think where you're at but contrary to belief, it's not okay to be openly gay. you can be open about it but don't expect people to be tolerant.

and oh yeah, the hip hop community for the most part really aren't feeling this whole frank ocean being bisexual thing at all. try living outside the gay community one time. i called it taboo because we all know how people like to generate attention in this case, frank ocean's just trying to use his sexual orientation for a buzz for his album. he could have done it anytime he pleased to do it. just like we have lady gaga running around trying to use the lgbt community as one of her really stunts for attention.

Did I ask you to give a fuck?

You have a tendency to not only put words/ideas/fallacies in my mouth but then to talk to me like I am the one spouting off nonsense

you talk as if there are no hate crimes involving gay people

I do? Okay, lets review my post again and you let me know where I say there are no hate crimes towards gay people

Lets see, I said that his album got rave reviews: Fact

I said that him coming out got him more sales: Fact

You know what I now realize about you, Refuji.

You don't like facts that you disagree with. Or that you don't first hand experience.

The great thing is these facts don't go away just because you lack the awareness of them.

oh god. talk about putting words into people's mouths. that's YOU. you noticed that you responded to me begging me to respond to you back. then you turn around and talk about me putting words into your mouth.

since you don't get it and want to play stupid. i'll break it down so you can understand.

just because some person who has an favorable opinion, the key word, OPINION, about an album doesn't MEAN SHIT. you talk about rave reviews from media outlets but yet you fail to see that a review from a magazine, a tv show, or whatever else is just a glorified opinion. just because someone likes something or doesn't like something doesn't mean that IT is factually good. you understand that now? so you using a bunch of people's opinions towards an album doesn't mean shit.

frank ocean album did about what, 100,000 on itunes which is good in today's standards since most artists can't even go gold let alone platnium these days. however in the record industry, an artist really isn't shit if they can't go gold or platnium saleswise. that's what record labels look for. if he can't go gold, then chances are that his career will pretty much go downhill as the record label may not be willing to invest in him since he's on a major label. bad enough, he's a part of the odd future imprint which has failed to translate it's buzz onto the record charts as the next big thing so they're pretty much relying on him to do big. i think him trying to come out was a way of boosting up his sales by branching himself out to a wider audience other than the hip hop/r&b scene but in reality, his sales show otherwise. his next week sales will show you where he's at in terms of sales. it's known fact that someone's second week sales is a huge drop from the first week. i honestly think him coming out as bi may have hurt his career since this is his first album and nobody outside the rap/r&b arena ever heard of him until the moment he said he was bi. he pretty much needs to rap/r&b support since that is his MAIN foundation. once he loses that like how nicki minaj disowned the hip hop audience which was her foundation, then he's done.

and yeah, being openly gay in today's world is still taboo. it's that people are a little bit more used to it now compared to how it was 10 years ago. it's that the public acknowledges it a bit more now since the last decade. it's slowly starting to become okay to be gay but we're not quite there yet and we won't be for a long time.

Oh My God.

This guy's album is AMAZING!! SO GOOD!!!

Him being on our team is just the icing on the cake. I can't wish this guy enough success. He might fuck around and bring R&B back.

he stuck his dick the disksette and it never came out.
