Hagel is going to get confirmed. Republicans are going to look like asshats for the shenanigans they're pulling. JUB is going to be flooded with a certain handful of people whining about how terrible it is going to be once Hagel is confirmed. The process will repeat itself next week.

That must be your word of the year. I didn't miss anything. Hagel hasn't confirmed anything since he's not SecDef yet. If he gets in office and fucks everything up, then he would have confirmed their reservations. Until then, nothing has happened except Republicans tailoring their reservations to the situation and then yelling and screaming like something bad has happened.

I have no idea of Hagel's agenda but, the Biggest Set of real Balls in the
Clinton family has long signaled her goal in life. Since she can't be Queen
of the universe, she will settle for POTEW...

I see the warts on all but the nature of the fight these days is if you admit a single fault they try to pry it open until it is a grand canyon.

I just don't know of another who has the experience in working the Senate coupled with the experience of being in War. All of that tempered with the concept, stated long prior to the selection, that our military needs to pivot into a new direction. Hagel and I agree on that pivot. Military leaders and congressmen alike have always fought those changes. Becoming a blue water Navy, becoming a two coast split fleet, becoming a dread naught navy, naval aviation, and becoming a carrier and submarine fleet.... ALL of it fought by the people in power because their power based and specific knowledge is based in that dogma so they are loath to change.

As far as your particulars on the nature of politics? That is its nature and it wont change soon. They play to the stupid and do so via sound bites. How often in this modern era have you heard a politician talking about manufacturing jobs? Pure ignorance. This country has not been a primarily industrial nation since 1959. It never will be again. We just hafta figure out what we wanna be when we grow up as a country. Yet politicians sell that shit pie every time you hand them a microphone. So yeah all of them are full of shit.... unfortunately you have plenty that eat the sandwiches.

Again, his positions were made clear and no reservations were proven valid. The job of the SecDef is to run the DoD, not to meander their way through gotcha questions and accusations from Republican Senators all day. Could his performance have been better? Sure. But this was by no means any confirmation of any reservations that anyone had, other than maybe their reservations that he may not be able to handle multiple Senate confirmations. Luckily, only one will do.

It is Obama's choice. The Republican Senators said he's going to get confirmed when they come back from recess. Sounds like a good job interview to me. And yes, I do blame the Republicans, at least partially, for Hagel's performance since almost every one of their questions was meant to railroad him into a yes or no position on committing to future wars or future spending or future policy. The rest of their questions were immaterial to the position of SecDef. They went up there with the sole purpose of trying to railroad the guy after spending weeks before doing so in the media. It was an embarrassment for the Republicans and, to top it all off, they refused to take a vote on his confirmation, left town, and then said they'd confirm him when they got back. Nothing will happen between last week's attempted vote and the vote that will occur when they get back. This is only meant to allow them to continue their temper tantrum for a little bit longer. They are honestly a disgrace. If you don't like the guy, then don't vote to confirm him, but don't hold up his confirmation using childish parliamentary maneuvers because he wouldn't commit to attacking Syria or bombing Iran.

And no, there is no apology in anything I have said. Tell chance2 not to get his hopes up for one either.

In fact, typically those guys who don't spend hours polishing the turd typically have better ideas and are smarter at implementation. Hagel's interview didn't follow the Washington guidelines of fight or smooze fest. It was his way of telling the smarmy republicans to go fuck themselves without actually saying it... he also allowed them to go on record sounding even more ridiculous than they did during the election... that is magical becomes it would have appeared to me to be impossible to make republicans any more isolated.

No he is absolutely the right pick. I think was is bugging your magical mormon panties is that you (and I) were completely behind Rumsfield and he was an abject failure so now you don't have anything to lose and wanna just go on record ahead of time. Hagel wont be screwing the pooch the way Rummy did though. He has a vision that doesn't include using special forces to prove his war fighting mindset.... Hagel wants to ramp our cyber security and focus on automated fighting techniques that hazard no loss of life. The clandestine nature of both efforts mean that even if Hagel fucks up, you will never know.

It makes sense since we're not hiring a professional interviewer. We're hiring a Secretary of Defense. I'd rather have someone who sucks at interviewing but knows the defense business than someone who spent their whole life working on their interview skills and learning exactly what to say to make people happy.

I also find it funny that you mention the individual interviews that Hagel had. It seems to me that if he's had numerous interviews and doesn't perform as well at one of them, then he should be immediately disqualified? You have no idea what any of his other conversations were like. I'm betting all of those were good since he's going to get confirmed when the recess is over.

I'm sorry, I too have been on both sides of that desk, and I have to respectfully disagree with you.

I do however agree with JH's statement where he says:

Seriously, if the interviewer is already biased against the interviewee, the guy could have given a stellar interview and it still wouldn't have mattered.

the interview isn't the be all end all BUT it's a red flag when someone interviews so poorly

it's not like there aren't a lot of capable people out there

i appreciate "real" and no BS - that's not what happened - his interview sucked - and your suggestion that him sucking is proof of him not sucking is curious
