Another day. Another year. Tell me how to tell 2012 from 2013 (at least until tax time, when it's easy).

Another thought. It is hypocritical for gay men to celebrate New Years if they don't support circumcision. Think about historical aspect between Christmas and New Years and the connection....

I'm confused. Would you please elaborate?

We celebrate the new year, we're not "glad to see it gone".

The gap between Christmas when Jesus was born and January 1st New Year is not accidental. Early Christians arranged the calendar dates to commemorate birth of Jesus and the day of his circumcision (covenant with God, since Jesus was born into Jewish family.)

Ahh, got it. I learned something new today. Thanks!

It's just generic hope that anything new is going to be better than what came before. We know what 2012 was (for most of my friends, it was a dung heap filled with razor blades), so the hope is that 2013 will be sunshine, lollipops and rainbows.

I get 7 days between Christmas and New Year, not the biblical 8.

Since the Mosaic Law commands that if a woman give birth to a male child, he should be circumcised in the foreskin of his flesh on the eighth day (Lev. 12:2-3), on this, the eighth day from His Nativity, our Saviour accepted the circumcision commanded by the Law. According to the command of the Angel, He received the Name which is above every name: JESUS, which means “Saviour” (Matt. 1:21; Luke 1:31 and 2:21).

Not to say anything about Christmas being a pagan graft onto the December 25 bit, long after the camel merchant manifesto was put to writing.

well, it's funny how people suddenly have an appreciation for life and the people around them on new years, christmas, or even their or your birthday where they're happy to see another day or a minute or to tell someone that they love them. that's what i think is the messed up things with these holidays. people show their ass all year long, they're mean to the next person, they treat the next person badly, they basically are assholes to people around them BUT all of a sudden, on christmas, new years, thanksgiving, valentines day, your birthday, your funeral and etc. that's when they want to tell you that they give a fuck about you or they love you or they're happy to be living and all this bullshit. it's disgusting. people take everything for granted until they find themselves in a fucked up situation then they realize how things really are. you never know if the next minute will be your or the person you love or even the stranger you don't know last. there's babies that don't even make it out the womb alive and folks don't appreciate life until someone they care about dies or has a stroke, gets into a car accident, crippled or whatever.

but props to rakroma for that info though. never knew that.

New Year is celebrated worldwide, whether it occurs on the 1st of January or another date... it is not a monopoly of occidental cultures, the circumcision thing is a bit of a stretch...

So, you're telling me somewhere in the world, they will celebrate March 1st tomorrow?

Given that Jesus was actually born in April his circumcision would not have occurred on January 1st. Also that Christmas is a celebration many thousands of years older than Christianity and the Bible, I don't buy this connection at all. Unless of course you're saying the Catholics stole important dates from the pagans and wrote their little informational novel around the pagan dates, thereby making the whole thing a load of fairy stories.
