The iPhone 4S?! WTF?!?

Um, bud, normally I enjoy your posts, but that is incredibly tasteless today.

Yes, I was shocked to hear Jobs had passed away today. He barely left...but he knew it was coming, of course.

Does the S in 4S stand for Shit?

Naah, it stands for special - short bus kinda special.

too soon?

I dont have any gripe with the iPhone, but paying $2,000 a year to own it is a bit high.

No disrespect but you clearly have low expectations. Apple has for months hinted at an iPhone 5, not some cheap parlor trick meant to skim us for every penny we have.

And no disrespect to you, mygaybuffet, but when has Apple hinted at the release of a new iPhone5? Is it not the media, the fans, the tech heads who speculate, speculate, speculate and build Apple launches into something that they sometimes are not?

I'd have been very surprised if all the rumours were true and a whole new iP5 was released. The 4S is a cool upgrade of the 4 that will tide us/them over for 12mths and then along will come the 5. I'm happy to buy the new phone, I'm on a 3GS right now but my plan expires next month and I can't wait to upgrade.

In your case an upgrade makes sense as you'll be upgrading hardware and software. In my case it's not. I have the iPhone 4 which I upgraded from an iPhone 3G. I am not paying $400 just for a camera upgrade. Sorry. It's not happening!

The 3GS was targeting those who still had the original, not those who had a 3G. The same holds true here. The 4GS is targeting those who are ending their two years with the 3GS. The half-step is due more to the carriers and their contracts than some master plan by Apple.

Your venom towards a company because you believed fanboy hype and media speculation is a little overblown, especially considering you apparently like their products. If you need to replace yours, lean on your carrier to see if they'll work with you.

Yes, apple never claimed to be coming out with an iPhone 5, but they were well aware of the rumors as well as the consumers expectations. If they wanted to [STRIKE]do well[/STRIKE] sell more, they should've at least quieted the rumors. People have been speculating about truly revolutionary upgrades, and they knew this. I think they should have 'leaked' info about an iPhone 4s especially when they announced that they were going to wait an extra couple of months for production. This only heightened consumers expectations for a truly new, great product.

I think if they had called it the iPhone 5 and kept all the same features, they still would sell more hahah

Apple never hint at anything. You are confusing Apple with Apple pundits.

This thread is hilarious. I wonder if Apple had actually named this new phone the iPhone 5, with a new OS, dual-core processor with 7x graphics improvement, 8MP camera with some of the best optics seen in a camera phone, would you then be happy?

Here's the standard pattern for Apple product releases. It happens almost every time.

1 - Public and blogosphere anticipate new release product. Apple never, ever comments. Predictions from "those in the know" reach fever pitch.

2 - Apple launch new product. Blogosphere moan and bitch that it doesn't meet their expectations, and predict a worldwide flop and destruction of Apple as we know it.

3 - Product becomes spectacular success and sells millions.

4 - Go to point 1.

This pattern can be applied to the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad, the MacBook Air, etc etc etc.

If the iPhone 4S does not have the features you require from a smartphone, there are plenty of alternatives on the market.

There really are not. The iPhone has every phone beaten by a slight edge when it comes to hardware. Although I am seriously considering getting a Droid Bionic.

I'm upgrading from the 3GS and I just placed my order today. I've had my 3GS for almost 2.5 years, I guess it will make a good MP3 player in my car, lol.

Exactly.

If Apple had only named this phone the iPhone 5, instead of the iPhone 4S, it would currently be being celebrated as the greatest thing in the history of mankind.

Even more than sliced-bread?

The differnce is that there was normally a reason to upgrade from the previous version and unless apple make iOS5 run like a dog on the iPhone 4 people wont upgrade.

Also the rest of the market has caught apple and passed them this phone brings them up to par with others but does not pass them in any way it basically matches 5-6 month old phones which is not enough. Apple products are required to be BETTER than the competition in some way and voice control is a novelty

But you forgot about Siri!!!!!

It's a lot like like Dragon Dictate, only it's from Apple. And unlike Dragon Dictate, you get to pay for the "S" to make it work!

So let me repeat the main message her:

But you forgot about Siri!!!!

AJ is spot on. Unless IOS5 runs like garbage, then there is no reason to upgrade. The minor upgrades they did don't phase me since it is essentially still the same phone. I'm mildly interested in the voice controls, but not to shell out the cash for the new phone. I'm sure there are some people who will still upgrade to it, but its not worth it to me.

I'm gonna be curious to see the sales on it though. Reactions to the iPhone 4s would indicate that it will bomb, but apparently people are looking forward to it. Many people are selling their phones on Ebay and stuff to upgrade to it.

In a way we should have saw this coming though considering they went from the iPhone 3g to the 3gs. I kind of wonder though why they were hinting at an iPhone 5.

Silly you. They wouldn't have needed to change ANYTHING - except the design. New design, and they could have called it iPhone 4C for crap ... and people STILL would have bought it. En masse. But with the old design now .. how would anyone recognize from far away that I do have the money for the NEW NEW NEW iPhone?
