Let the Right One In (2008/Norway) seemed undecided if it was a sappy fairy tale or a violent adult thriller. It may be cynical of me to prefer hopelessness to romance in my cinema, but the 'my secret vampire friend' theme just felt really insipid to me. After heaping scorn on it a friend replied, "You know, Z., every movie doesn't have to be some tortured Russian meditation."
