Users of Netflix may be interested to know that the company is doing away with the five-star rating system in favor of a binary thumbs-up or thumbs-down rating. Their data scientists believe this will improve suggestions Netflix can give the viewer. Personally, I hate this idea, as I've never taken their algorithmic recommendations presuming my taste too seriously. Rather, I use the ratings as a sort of notebook to help me create my own impression of what I like. I'm bright enough to do that, and I would like to think most other viewers are too. Oh well. The dumb world gets dumber.
