I started watching Xmas movies today...

From a series of several hour long French documentaries on some of their elite Michelin chefs.

L'invention de la cuisine. (2009). (Inventing cuisine.)

The first three:

Michel Bras' elegant, confident work:

Nicoise Gerald Passedat's cooking looked best when working with tradition, not invention:

Michel Guerard's jovial and revolutionary cooking:

I watched Iron Man 3 recently. I cannot say I liked it as much as the first one. I find this one a bit mushy for my taste.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Like its predecessor, I enjoyed it as an entertainment, but can't swallow the notion that it works as anything more than the vaguest dystopia.

Pretty much.

Not jumping on any bandwagon but Jennifer Lawrence is badass.

I saw "Dallas Buyers Club" and thought it was very good. Matthew McConaughy is great as is Jerod Leto. Tomorrow night I'm planning on seeing "The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug." I enjoyed this first Hobbit movie and I'm hoping this one is as good if not better.

I watched People Like Us at home last night and I liked it. Makes you ponder about family.

Desolation of Smaug. It was good, but I think I liked An Unexpected Journey better, even though most reviews are saying Smaug is far better. I think the ending (or lack thereof) takes a bit of punch from this movie. But the really weird thing is, the best part of it is a character that wasn't even in the book. Evangeline Lilly's Tauriel is quite the surprise as the new she-elf and totally rocks the part.

About a man who saw past the enchantments of his subject, Bill Cunningham New York (2010).
