The Library Is Open

How often do you visit your local library?

  • Jason, I had no idea what I've been missing, off to apply for a library card.

Libraries are the best! Wandering through the stacks, just randomly pulling any title that sounds interesting. It's amazing what serendipity will produce.

I haven't been to a public library for years. I read a lot, but I buy books now rather than borrow them.

Love the library and use it to read any best sellers that interest me. I'd rather borrow them from the library than buy them since I generally don't re-read books. Once I read it, i'm done with it. Also, the local branch library near me happens to be very cruisy. :D

Do you own a public library?
Public? No, But my personal library has, at last count over 5,000 books. A good mix or non fiction as well as fiction, including a couple that can be found nowhere else in the world.

oh and yeah the whole digitally reading books thing does not appeal to me.

I love feeling a book and turning the pages. it's orgasmic.. no no.. it's nerd-gasmic. :D

Yeah, but if you travel quite often and want to take some light reading material you can get one that can hold up to 1,000 unabridged novels. Can you take a thousand books with you when you travel? Don't get me wrong, I like having the printed books themselves, it is my preferred method of reading. Almost nothing like sitting down with a good book and reading by candlelight. But as I said, when I travel I need to make certain concessions in order to have a reasonable bit of reading material. Besides, I never know just what reference material will come in handy while out and about. And I often find myself out away from sources of internet access.

Likewise. I used to go through 3 books a week in high school and undergrad from the local libraries before I got too busy and reading became a rarer pleasure. Still frequent - Thursday nights post-karate I sit in a hot bath for an hour with my current read and a mug of strong coffee, and I often read at night before bed - but not quite as voraciously as before, and these days I buy more than I borrow. I have since upgraded to a Kindle as well, but I have pretty impressive collection of novels and coffee table books which I dip into. Speaking of which, it's 3 weeks to the local book megastore's Annual Winter Sale. :D

I still go sometimes just to hang out, but I don't checkout books much anymore. I have a hard time focusing so I tend to only checkout new Lincoln/Child novels.

I love my local library though. It is my favorite place to spend time at in Salem.

I love my library. It's a bit hard to get to especially because I work full time but I like to reserve items and sometimes get dad to pick them up for me.

I actually don't get many books though because I love shopping for books

When I fist landed my butt in USA..I asked a guy to met me at the library..

but he called the shot immediately..LMAO. I have soulmate with library- never can get too far from that place, they're like my sanctuary..O:)

but I think it's the most turn off place for men to hook up. I've tried numerously, the place just have bad vibe srsly lol

I have never been to a public library to be honest. I think I only went to the library in college a handful of times. I use the internet for a lot of my research for school and if I read a book I will buy the book. I will go to book stores for that. I normally sit there and read a couple chapters or something to determine if I like where its going.

I'm going to the library now. A book I requested was sent to my branch from the Folcroft branch; they have the only copy in the county library system.

I used to visit often, then I moved to philly. I don't know if the printed word has seriously shrunk since I was little but I swear to god it's gotten smaller and blurrier and I refuse to deal with the optical migraines anymore. I've visited three here so far, and two of them had jack shit for their large print section and the BVS library was closed for remodelling when I went. So I usually just use audiobooks or jack up the font on the pc for books at home.

I can see the library from my flat but have only been a few times so far. The collection of media "waiting to be picked up" (with reserve tags on it) is significant so I imagine that's one of the most popular things to be checked out (DVD's or CD's). But otherwise their book collection seems just OK. Seattle Public Library (SPL) downtown main library is awesome though and architecturally interesting.

I used to use the public library in Memphis all the time for audio books to kill time driving. havent as much here but i dont spend as much long drives. That and I have access to a bunch of resources from my school and various web accesses research libraries such as Ebsco Host and Luxus Nexus... so I really have stopped using the brick and mortar version.

However, I have decided to move downtown and will be about eight blocks from the main branch so I may start using it again.

Every few months I'll visit the room in my local library where donated books are sold, and check out the stock, but I haven't been to the stacks in many years.
When I was a college and university student I was at the library just about every day. The reading rooms of the libraries I liked best were grand and beautiful spaces, and I just enjoyed being there reading the day's or yesterday's newspapers. The New York Public Library is one of my favorite places in the city--too bad there about to embark on a disastrous remodel. Where is Vartan Gregorian when we need him?

I haven't been to a library in years. The one in my town was quite small, and didn't really have much of a selection. I only really went there to use the computer, before I had one at home.

The library was about the size of a double garage.

The library card I currently use can be for any library in our metropolitan area.

When I first began university, I got me a university library card, one for the local city that opened up its chain of libraries and one for my home town.

When I moved to Manchester, I had library cards for the University of Manchester, U. of Salford, UMIST, and Manchester Central Library as I studied there. I loved the huge dome in the central library, and making some noise, lol.

OK, here's a relevant question...... How many still know how to use the Dewey decimal system? And can you find what you are looking for in the old card catalogs?
