Chapter 7: A Rescue and a revelation

Adam turned over in his bed, restless and unable to sleep at all. He couldn’t stop thinking about everything that was happening in his life right now. Jake and him had always been best friends and he always thought that he and Jake would end up together. Lately however, it seemed like this theory had been tested with the introduction of Steve Roberts into the picture. Just thinking about it made Adam’s blood boil, and he rolled over furiously, not knowing what to think anymore.

Adam glanced over at the clock, 3:15. It was almost first light, and Adam knew that he wouldn’t be able to get any sleep, so he decided to get up. As he sat up in bed, he looked over at his phone, the light on it was flashing. He remembered that Jake had phoned earlier, and how he had chose to ignore the call. With the message light flashing restlessly, Adam decided to indulge his curiosity, and check Jake’s message. As he listened to the it, his eyes opened wide, and he leapt straight out of bed, disappearing out his bedroom door.

Steve was tossing and turning in his bed, and looked very uncomfortable. He was mumbling things in his sleep, and looked as though he was having a nightmare. Suddenly Steve awoke with a jolt, and sat up in bed. He was covered in a cold sweat and looked around the room, rubbing his eyes. He glanced over at the clock which read 3:15, and decided to get up to get a glass of water. Steve slipped on his slippers and quietly trotted downstairs to the kitchen to grab a drink.

He kept pondering his relentless thoughts about Jake. What exactly was happening to him he did not know, but he felt all queasy and excited whenever Jake was around. Steve didn’t want to admit that he had feelings for Jake, even though the kiss they shared a few nights earlier had pretty much spoken for itself. It was too strange to him, he had been trying to cope with this inner demon all his life, but his façade was wearing thin, and he couldn’t keep up the act any longer.

He got his drink and then sat down at the kitchen table, glancing over at the counter. He saw Jake’s watch that he had placed there earlier, and then got up to go get it. As he held it in his hands, swaying it around and examining the detailed metal work, he started feeling those feelings again. He wished that Jake was there with him, and that they were talking, and laughing and just enjoying each other’s company. He quickly put the watch down and turned away, taking his place back at the kitchen table.

Jake sat on the edge of his bed, looking as if he were in a trance. His eyes were blood shot and it looked as though he hadn’t even blinked in ages. He had given up pounding on the wall and screaming, it was no use, no one was coming for him. He was done thinking, it didn’t seem like there was anything left to ponder. It was clear to him that he had been betrayed by his own mother, his only family. His best friend didn’t seem to want to talk to him anymore, whatever that was all about. And the one person he wanted to see right now had no clue that Jake was even missing at all.

So Jake just continued staring, in his trance, until he got a brilliant idea and snapped out of it. He glanced at the clock, 3:15 perfect! The night guard would soon be doing his rounds soon and Jake had a crazy idea that might just get him out of this place. His plan was to fake sickness so that they would have to open his door, then he would let his crazy mind do the rest. For his plan to work he would have to go to the extremes, which meant that he would have to make his “sickness” believable.

First things first, Jake had learned that his room was being monitored by a camera. And he also knew exactly where the camera was, as he had spotted it earlier on in the night. Jake cleverly rummaged through the clothing that they had provided him and found what looked to be a nightdress. “Eyeuch! I’m supposed to wear this?” Jake whispered to himself, and then tossed it towards the camera. With luck the nightdress draped itself over the camera and got snagged, holding it there in place. “Yesss” Jake silently cheered.

Next Jake had to feign sickness, and there was only one thing that Jake knew would be convincing, so he searched around on the desk, and found the complimentary toothbrush. Jake grabbed it and held it up in front of him, slightly hesitant, but knowing it was the only way. The night guard was doing his nightly rounds when he got a call from his supervisor. “Camera in room 20152 is down, get there stat!”, the night guard proceeded to change directions and headed towards Jake’s room at a much quicker speed than before.

Once he got there he knocked on the door, asking if everything was alright in there. “I’m not feeling well, I threw up!” Jake cried out in his wimpiest, most feeble fake voice ever. “Can you clean it up, it’s making me more sick!”. The nigh guard hesitated for a moment, thinking of radioing the supervisor, but decided to give in to Jake’s feeble cries and opened the door. Jake watched in amazement as the wall just magically opened revealing a door, now he knew how people got in and out of these rooms.

“Hello?” The night guard called out, reaching for the light switch, he flicked it up and down, nothing. The night guard tied to peer through the dark room, searching for Jake, who was waiting for the perfect moment. The night guard took one more step, and then Jake knew it was time, “He…hello?” the night guard called out and suddenly he was met with a swift kick from behind. He went flying into the wall, hitting his head and then coming to rest in to corner of the room. Jake quickly grabbed his sheet off the bed and draped it over the guard getting him entangled in it. Then Jake proceeded to heave the desk up against the corner, trapping the night guard up against the wall.

Jake then quietly crept out of the room and shut the door, leaving the night guard trapped, if only for a moment. Jake would have to work quick if he wanted to escape, he crept down the hallway silently, searching for an exit. He moved forward slowly and saw what looked like light in the distance. Once he approached the light, he found out it was moonlight steaming in from some windows, and looked out of them. Jake didn’t realize how high up he was, or that there were even this many floors at the Center, but this might be his only chance.

He silently opened up the window and proceeded to slink through it, out onto a tiny ledge that ran around the outside of the building. He then shut the window again and hugged the wall, inching across the ledge, hoping to find some way to climb down to the ground below. Luckily there was a lattice of vines growing up the side of the wall and he managed to grab hold of it and work his way down. Finally planting his feet on the ground he proceeded to run as fast as he could, towards the road, civilization, anything!

Suddenly Jake could see the gates, and knew this was it, he was home free. When he reached them however, he found that they were locked, and way to tall for him to climb over. He looked left, a stone wall as far as the eye could see, and right, the same thing. Now Jake was out of options, he knew that he had to hurry as they would realize that he was gone any minute and start to come looking for him. Just then he remembered he had his cell phone, and although it had died in his room, he prayed that he could just get one more call out of it.

Steve was washed out his glass and put it away, and took one more glance at Jake’s watch sitting on the counter. He sighed and then proceeded to walk out of the kitchen, but just as he did the phone rang startling him half to death. He ran to grab it before it rang again waking up his parents, and answered it cautiously. “Hello?” Steve stammered, “Steve help me, I’m trapped at that crazy Waldorf Treatment Center, come and meet me at the front gate as fast as you can, please hur…”, Jake’s voice cut off. “Oh my god!” Steve blurted out loud, not knowing what to make of the desperate call from Jake.

However, in seconds the kitchen was empty as Steve had already got his shoes, and keys and was out the door. A screech could be heard echoing throughout the empty kitchen, as Steve took off out of the driveway, straight towards the Center. Steve was trying to go as fast as he could without speeding too excessively, when all of a sudden it started to rain really hard. Steve turned on his wipers but was having trouble seeing clearly through the windshield, suddenly he saw bright headlights and before he knew it was face to face with a speeding semi.

At the same time Adam was speeding down a different road on the other side of town, turning on his wipers to try to clear some of the torrential rain. Once he had heard Jake’s message, all the ill mannered thoughts that he was thinking towards Jake had disappeared, and it was like nothing had happened. They were best friends for life, and if Jake was in trouble Adam was there for him. On the message Jake had said that his mother had him admitted, and Adam knew exactly where Jake would be, so he continued his drive towards the Center.

Jake was nervously waiting by the front gates of the Center, getting drenched by the sudden downpour. He kept glancing out the gates in hopes the he would hear the splash of Steve’s tires on the road or see the headlights of the car. He was half ducking behind a bush, when suddenly a light went on up high in one of the floors of the Center. “Oh crap!” Jake cried out, as he knew the word had spread about him escaping. Soon other lights were periodically going in what seemed like a chain reaction, and he knew that he was running out of time.

Steve wailed on his horn as he swerved to avoid the semi that was barreling down the road. “God, slow down! Maniac!” Steve screamed as he narrowly evaded the head on collision. He recollected his thoughts and continued down the road, he could see the Center coming into focus on top of a hill just up ahead, he was almost there. Meanwhile Adam was still driving down the road, coming from the opposite direction, he could also see the Center appearing up ahead, he knew he was almost there and would finally get Jake out of that horrible place.

Jake couldn’t wait any longer and he decided to take his chances climbing the 20 foot high gate. He began ascending it, when suddenly he heard barking, wild, vicious, rabid barking. Jake knew that the had released the dogs and fought to get over the slippery metal gate. With great difficulty he managed to scale right over it, and then down the other side, but slipped at the end and fell, twisting his ankle slightly. “Ohhh, crap!” Jake cried out in pain, as he hobbled to his feet and limped away from the gate, onto the road.

Suddenly Jake saw headlights coming from around the corner, and heard the splash of tired on asphalt, he knew that Steve was here and he could finally get out of this place. Steve approached the front gates of the Center and saw a figure standing in the road, he knew it was Jake and sped over to him. Adam was approaching from the other direction, and also saw Jake standing in the road, he started to drive towards him, but slowed down when he saw another car approach Jake first.

Jake hopped up to Steve who had pulled over beside him and quickly got in the car. Jake just stared at Steve for a moment, as Steve starred right back. Steve could clearly understand that Jake was grateful, but at a loss for words. Then Jake just threw his arms around Steve, catching him off guard. Steve paused awkwardly for a second, but eventually gave in and embraced Jake, closing his eyes and letting the moment sink in. “Um Steve..?” Jake said, interrupting the moment, “Could you let me go now!” Jake said, chuckling, as Steve’s eyes bolted open and then he pulled himself back. “Oh…er….sorry”. Steve felt really embarrassed now, but Jake just gave him a look, and it made Steve feel better.

“Let’s get out of here!” Jake said after a moment, and then Steve clued in and took off down the road. Adam watched as the car that Jake had climbed into started moving towards him, and he was curious as to who was driving, although he did have a hunch. “Look Steve, another car? At this hour, it’s kind of late” Jake pointed to the car that they were about to pass up ahead, and Steve took notice. At that very moment the two cars passed, and Adam’s and Steve’s eyes connected, it all seemed to happen in slow motion. Adam leered over at Steve and Steve just looked back and shrugged with a malicious smirk.

Steve then accelerated and shot off down the road in his fancy sports car, clearly showing off. “Who was that?” Jake questioned, “I have no idea!” Steve shot back, and then the two continued driving. Steve knew full well who it was, and also had a hunch that Adam had come there to pick up Jake too. The fact that Steve had beat Adam to the punch, made Steve feel important and also fueled his ever growing ego that seemed to have disappeared for awhile.

Adam tightened his grip on the steering wheel, Steve had clearly struck a nerve and Adam thought for a second, trying to summon some form of rationality to calm him down. He couldn’t do it, and decided that he had to do something about it. Adam slammed on the brakes and then pulled an illegal U-turn and screeched off down the road after Steve and Jake. He didn’t know what he was going to do when he caught up to them, but he had plenty of time to figure that out. Right now Adam was running on pure testosterone, and who knew where that would get him.

Steve and Jake continued driving away from the Center, Jake never wanted to go back there in his life. “Um.. Steve?” Jake questioned, “Yes?” Steve responded. “Could I maybe stay at your house tonight, there is no way that I am going home, at least not now!”. Steve was feeling those feelings again, and part of him wanted to say no, just out of fear of these new things inside. He however couldn’t resist, and gave in, “Sure! Not a problem!” Steve tried to sound as accommodating as possible, part of him was excited at the prospect of spending the night with Jake Saddler.

“Oh, thanks so much man! There is just no way that I am going to face my mom after what she did to me!”. Jake was clearly getting worked up, and Steve decided to take action. “Hey, Jake! Calm down, it’s ok you are safe now, you’re here with me!”, Steve was surprised at his own calmness. Jake looked up at Steve, and immediately felt safer, and more relaxed. There was definitely something going on between the two of them and neither one could make sense of it at this point, so they just kept avoiding it, until now.

After driving a while Steve pulled into his enormous driveway and then parked the car, turning off the ignition. Jake turned to open his door, but hesitated when he noticed that Steve wasn’t moving. “Uh… Steve? Are we going to go inside?” Jake was confused, Steve looked like he was thinking hard about something. “Jake…..” Steve finally turned to face Jake, and Jake could not read those beautiful blue eyes that he adored. “I’m falling in love with you…”, Jake was speechless, there were so many things that were running through his head that he couldn’t even get a word out.

“Every time I’m with you it just feels right, like nothing else matters, and when I’m not around you I miss you!”. Steve was clearly using an amazing amount of courage to say what he was saying, and Jake knew this. Jake still didn’t know how to react, so he did the only thing that he could think of at the time, he kissed Steve. Jake Jumped out of his seat right on top of Steve and let all his emotion come out. There was no need for an answer now, Steve knew exactly what Jake was thinking as he fully took advantage of the passionate moment. Little did the two know that there was a third emotion overshadowing them, the emotion of envy.

Adam had parked his car on the road outside Steve’s mansion, and was now peering at the two through the neatly trimmed hedges that surrounded Steve’s property. Adam was so upset that Steve was living his fantasy, it should be him kissing Jake not Steve! Now Adam knew that the game had been kicked up a notch, and it was time to play hardball! Adam was determined to let Jake know his feelings once and for all, and he didn’t care who he hurt in the process. He climbed into his car and took off down the street into the darkness not even disturbing the two lovebirds who were still lip locked.

Finally Jake and Steve managed to get into the house, and migrated up to Steve’s room, a place that was becoming quite familiar to Jake these days. They sat down on Steve’s bed, and just looked into each other’s eyes. “I wish it could be like this forever, just you and me!” Jake said as he got lost in Steve’s blue eyes. “Yea, that would be awesome!” Steve chuckled, “However we have a problem! I’m still with Ashley!”. Both Jake and Steve made a disgusted look at the same time, and then burst out laughing. “No, Ashley is a really nice girl and all, but apparently I’m gay!” Steve continued while fighting off his laughter.

“Yes, apparently!” Jake retorted, “So what are you going to do?”. “I’m going to have to break up with her at school tomorrow, oh god, that won’t go over well!”, Steve had a pained look on his face, and Jake knew that Ashley Santos was a force to be reckoned with. “Well good luck with that, but I however am exhausted and I think I’m going to crash!” Jake snuggled up in the covers and rolled over but stopped and turned back to Steve. “G’night!” Jake cooed and kissed Steve quickly on the cheek, then he rolled over again and adjusted himself within the blankets, drifting off to sleep.

Steve just smiled and looked over at Jake sleeping beside him, examining him and all his beauty. Steve had never experienced this kind of feeling before, a feeling of belonging. Steve bent over and kissed the top of Jake’s head and then rolled over the other way and started to drift off to sleep, knowing that tomorrow was going to be one of the most trying days of his life. It didn’t matter to him though, he now had Jake to support him, and that was all he ever needed. With Jake’s love backing him up, Steve knew that he could conquer anything.

Chapter 8: Nothing in life is certain

Jake awoke to sun streaming in from the window behind Steve’s enormous bed. He sat up and rubbed his eyes looking over beside him, empty. Jake looked around the room and didn’t see Steve anywhere. He hobbled down the stairs after making a quick stop to the washroom and saw that Steve was fully dressed and sitting at the kitchen table drinking some water. “Jake! What are you doing? Get dressed, we’re going to be late for school!” Steve cried out, and then rushed Jake up the stairs into the washroom and shut the door. “You shower, and I’ll wait out here, and um.. Get your things ready!” Steve cried out, but realized that Jake didn’t have anything here.

Steve scratched his head and then looked around his room, he walked over to the closet and found some of his clean clothes and brought them to Jake. “Hand them to me through the door!” Jake called out from the washroom, “Hey no peeking!” Jake scolded jokingly as Steve half covered his eyes with his hands, and then jumped out of the way as Jake slammed the door. Jake then came out dressed, and the two went to the kitchen to grab a bite to eat before school. “Just get some toast! Quick!” Steve warned, soon they would be late.

“Thanks for the clothes!” Jake was grateful as he didn’t have any of his own things with him at the moment. Jake realized that in order to get his things he would have to go home, and at home he would have to face his mother. This however was not something that he was ready to do, so he put the thought out of his mind. “No problem!” Steve replied, “Now let’s go! We’re practically late!”. Steve pushed Jake out the door and Jake nearly choked on his toast as he gobbled it down. It seemed like Jake and Steve had just taken off out of Steve’s driveway, when suddenly they were at school.

“Thanks for the ride man, good luck with Ashley!” Jake called out to Steve as he ran off to his class. Jake quickly looked around, and when the coast was clear he blew Steve a kiss. Steve smiled and looked down at his feet, then he took off in the other direction hurrying off to his class. The day went on, Jake found that being away from school for a day had it’s repercussions as he had a mountain of homework, and Steve had been avoiding Ashley all day, which proved to be a difficult task.

Steve however, could not avoid her forever, and it seemed that the time had come as Steve stood outside his locker. He was adjusting some papers that were inside the locker and then he shut it revealing Ashley. She was hiding behind the door and Steve cried out in alarm. “Steeeeeeve! What’s the matter, aren’t you happy to see me?” Ashley whined, “No, I mean yes, I mean what?” Steve was fumbling with his words. “Steve what’s going on with you today?” Ashley pressed him for an answer, “Ok, Ashley look…there’s something that I have to tell you…”.

Ashley could sense that something was up, she was after all the most popular girl in the school. “Oh hell no! Steven Anthony Roberts you’re breaking up with me???” Ashley’s tone had become stern and unforgiving. “Wow, you’re good! I mean…Ashley, I just think that it’s for the best you know?” Steve felt slightly relieved that she wasn’t causing a scene, or so he thought. Ashley’s gaze wandered off, she was starting to breathe more heavily, as if she was searching for something to say. “So, I guess this is goodb……”, Steve got cut off in mid sentence.

“You SHUTTUP! Don’t you even think for ONE SECOND that this is over, do you hear me, no one dumps ASHLEY SANTOS!!!”, Ashley was breathing monstrously and her eye was tweaking slightly. “Ashley are you ok?” Steve questioned, “JUST PEACHY!!!” She screamed and with that grabbed the nearest locker door and ripped it clear off the hinges. She threw it across the hall and it collided with the other lockers, denting them badly. All the students that were in the hall at that time froze and stared at Ashley, “WHAT???” She screamed, and with that they all ran in fear.

Steve just stood there, mouth agape, he knew Ashley was a strong individual but didn’t know how strong. “Well good luck with that…” Steve casually said and then strolled off, finally free from Ashley’s clutches. Ashley just sat down on the floor cross legged, arms crossed in front of her and let out the highest, most ear piercing scream ever causing everyone to come running out of their classrooms to see what happened. Steve just laughed as he walked away, knowing that that wasn’t his problem anymore. He couldn’t wait to tell Jake what had happened as he made his way out of the school doors, just as the final bell rang.

Steve waited by his car, and within minutes he saw Jake heading towards him, about 100 feet away. Jake smiled and Steve smiled back, but then Steve watched as his old group of friends approached Jake. “Hey Saddler!” they taunted, they began hassling and tossing him around between them, ignoring his objection. Steve suddenly bolted up and started walking towards them, but then hesitated and stopped. He was thinking, these were his friends, what would they think if he didn’t join in, but stopped their fun. But he couldn’t bear to see Jake getting attacked, what could he do?

Adam happened to be walking towards the parking lot coming from another direction when he saw that Jake was being hassled by some of Steve’s crowd. He was about to walk into the tussle he noticed that Steve was standing by his car, he seemed to be contemplating something. He didn’t want too get to close when Steve was around, not because he was afraid of Steve, but he was afraid of what he might try and do to Steve. He had so much anger at the moment that he thought it would be wise to watch from afar. Adam got as close to the scene as he could and hid behind a bush.

Steve decided that he didn’t need his old friends anymore, because they weren’t really his friends anyway, just drinking buddies and jocks. “Hey!” Steve called out as he approached the scene, “Oh look here’s Steve, he’ll kill this punk!” one of the guys stated. “Leave him alone guys, just go home or something!” Steve’s voice commanded a presence, and the posse seemed to flinch slightly. “What? Steve let’s take this fag!” another guy said, but this remark hit a nerve with Steve, and he lunged at this guy, slamming him up against a nearby car.

“Don’t you ever say that about him again you hear me?”, Jake was shocked, he remembered that Steve could be aggressive, he had been slammed up against a locker by Steve himself. This time however, Steve was fighting for him and it was one of the hottest things that he had ever seen. “C’mon guys, let’s get out of here, looks like Roberts is a fag too!” The last guy shouted, and with that the posse took off, as Steve made threatening gestures at them.

“You ok Jake?” Steve asked after he had calmed down a bit. “I’m fine, but I’m impressed! Sticking up for me? That was so awesome!” Jake cried out, and then leapt onto Steve grasping him in a thankful hug. Steve flinched slightly, knowing that he and Jake were in plain sight, but then returned the embrace, as he didn’t care what others thought anymore. “Well, what should we do, head home and get some homework done? Or perhaps head to the arcade?” Jake questioned Steve playfully, but Steve had a more serious look on his face.

“Jake?” Steve asked, “Would you like to go out on a date with me tonight?”. Both paused, taking in the words that had just come out of Steve’s mouth.. “Sure, I’d love to!” Jake replied, beaming from ear to ear, he knew he liked Steve and that Steve liked him back, but this would make it official. “Where we going?” Jake joked, but Steve had a nice night planned in his mind. “You’ll have to wait and see!” Steve teased, and then put his arm around Jake’s shoulder.

Adam raised his hand to his mouth, things were heating up fast and if he didn’t do something about it, Jake was as good as Steve’s. Adam knew that he needed to find out more about this date, for it might be the perfect opportunity to let Jake know how he really feels. Adam continued to listen and try and gather more information, he knew that tonight Jake Saddler was going to know his true feelings and that made him feel better. He even felt some of the anger inside him melt away, tonight was going to be a night to remember.

“Well let’s get out of here! School is over for the day, I don’t want to hang around!” Steve wanted to get home and start planning his date with Jake. “Steve, you head home and you can plan our date! I’m just going to swing by Adam’s and see how he’s doing, k?”. “Sure! I’ll catch you later, 6:00 sharp!” Steve replied, and pointed his finger at Jake emphasizing that Jake shouldn’t be late. Jake laughed and then waved bye and took off down the road.

Adam panicked, If Jake was going to stop by at his house he would have to be there, or else he might miss an opportunity to gather more information. Adam knew that he would have to beat Jake to his house, so he took off down the road, knowing that there were a few shortcuts that he could take along the way. Thoughts were swirling around inside Adam’s head, he was excited that he finally had the perfect opportunity to tell Jake, but he was also slightly apprehensive about the fact that Jake and Steve had a date tonight. Adam wondered what he would do if Jake rejected him, it would devastate him and he knew he couldn’t deal with that. But Jake wouldn’t reject him, they were best friends and friends are forever, this comforted Adam and he continued to run.

Jake however, had lied to Steve, he had no intention of going to Adam’s house, where he really wanted to do was his own home. He needed to get his things, because he realized that if he were going to be staying with Steve for a while, he would need some of his things. He really didn’t want to go home and risk facing his mother, but he needed clothes and a toothbrush, so he had to press onward. When he reached his house he saw his mother’s car in the driveway and that meant that she was home. “Damn!” Jake said aloud and then decided to try the garage door at the side.

Upon entering the house, he didn’t notice any sign of his mother and though the coast was clear. He decided to move upstairs to his room and see if he could make it out again without even alerting his mother’s attention. He grabbed all the clothes that he could, and his toothbrush and personal items. Once he had all he could carry stuffed into an old duffel bag, he grabbed a warm jacket and darted out the door straight into a black wall. However it wasn’t a wall at all, but his mother’s body.

“J…Jake? Oh my god, you’re alive and safe! Come here baby, give mom a hug!” Mrs. Saddler made for her son, but he jumped back, “Get away from me, don’t you dare touch me, I don’t know who you are anymore, just get out of my way!”. Jake was very upset at his mother right now and couldn’t bear to look at her let alone speak to her. “But Jake, it was for the best, you must understand….”, Jake cut his mother off. “Don’t mom, JUST DON’T!”, Jake stormed past his mother and made for the front door, opened it and left. Mrs. Saddler took off after him, “Jake, where are you going? Come back this instant! Listen to me I am your mother!”. Jake stopped and closed his eyes in anger, then he turned on his heel and started his mother right in the face.

“You aren’t my mother, I don’t know who you are, you are dead to me!”, Jake was fuming but his actions were justified, that’s how Jake saw it anyway. “Oh Jake, that is a horrible thing to say, you….”, Jake cut her off again. “I’m leaving, I’ve found someone who actually loves me for who I am, take care mom” and with that Jake turned around and started walking away. Mrs. Saddler was shaking, she didn’t understand, Jake had found someone? Like another guy? The though disgusted her, and she had to retreat to the house to collect herself, she also noticed the neighbors were peeking out of their curtains.

Jake recovered from his ordeal, only because he was so mad at his mother that he didn’t even want to think about her. He was also anticipating his date with Steve later that night, and that made him feel slightly better. “Whoa! I’m so sorry…” Jake cried out as he went around the corner and crashed into a breathless and panting Adam. “Oh, Jake!” Adam hollered in surprise, they both looked over and saw that they were just in front of Adam’s house. “Adam, you scared me! How are you man? I’ve got to tell you, I was in this crazy place last night, my mom tried to have me committed!”.

Jake was talking fast and Adam was still trying to catch his breath from running all the way home. “I left you a message but my battery died before I could finish, it was so scary man, I’m never going back home!”, Jake was starting to get angry again, but then he calmed himself down. “Want to come in and talk about it Jake?” Adam questioned, but Jake shook his head, “I’m so sorry, I can’t man, I have…well ok, I’ll tell you, but promise not to tell!”. Adam nodded “I promise!” and then Jake and him did their secret handshake, “I’ve got a date with Steve Roberts tonight!”, Adam feigned surprise, but it was hard to do.

“That’s….err….awesome!” Adam muttered, “I know, it’s weird, the whole gay thing, but I’m so happy, and excited, so you have to be happy for me! Haha!”, Jake smiled at Adam. Adam smiled back, and then decided to bid Jake adieu, “Well you go and get ready for that um…date, I’ve got homework to catch up on! Talk to you later Jake!”, Adam waved him off. “Later man!” Jake replied and then walked off down the road, under the watchful glare of Adam.

Once Adam was sure that Jake was gone, he got in his car and took off the opposite way of Jake. He drove his car up into the hills, straight towards Steve Roberts’ mansion. Once he reached Steve’s he parked a little ways down the road, and then got out and walked towards the house. He noticed that Steve’s car was in the driveway, and he knew Steve was probably home. After sneaking around the sides of the house for a while, Adam heard a voice coming from an open kitchen window and he crept up to it.

Adam peered inside and saw that the voice belonged to Steve, he was on the phone. “Yes, 6:30 sharp please, yes that will be fine, and what was your address again? Hadley Rd.? 3200? Awesome, I’ll see you there! No, thank you! Bye now!”. Steve hung up the phone and then turned to look out the open window. Adam quickly ducked hoping that Steve hadn’t seen him, he was in luck. Steve got up and headed upstairs, and Adam just sat there under the window.

He remembered Hadley Rd. and 3200, this was gold! He was walking back to his car when he saw the bus drive by, and he saw Jake sitting in one of the window seats. Thankfully Jake hadn’t seen him, and he ran to his car, quickly jumping inside. Adam’s heart was beating fast, he felt like some sort of espionage agent or something. His life was never this exciting before, and he kind of liked the adventure. He looked on ahead and saw Jake step off the bus, he quickly started the ignition and took off down the road.

Jake stepped off the bus, and saw what he though looked like Adam’s car take off down the road away from him. He dismissed it as an illusion and then started to walk up to Steve’s house. He was so excited for his date that he could barely contain himself. He hoped that he had managed to grab something nice to wear in his hurry at his house, so that he didn’t look like a complete mess. When he arrived Steve greeted him at the door, “You’re early!” Steve joked. “Are you sure it’s cool that I can stay here like this?” Jake’s voice faltered slightly, “It’s fine, my parents are totally cool, they said you can stay as long as you like!”.

Steve’s voice was so reassuring, it could make anyone calm in an instant, and Jake felt 100% better. “You better go and get ready stud!” Steve hollered at Jake and then tapped him on the butt, to which Jake jumped. “Haha! Control yourself!” Jake joked and then headed upstairs to change. It was now almost 6:00 and they were about to head out. Jake found his nicest clothes, sadly the ones that his mom had bought for him the other day on their outing. He put his feelings for her aside and checked himself out in the mirror. “Smokin” he joked to himself in the mirror as he pointed at his reflection and raised an eyebrow.

“C’mon dude! We’ve gotta go!” Steve hollered from downstairs, and Jake darted our the door, meeting Steve at the bottom of the landing. Steve looked amazing, he was freshly showered and had his hair done up in a sleek fashion. He smelled amazing and his body was flawless. Steve also found Jake to be irresistible and both spent a minute sizing each other up. Then they both realized what they were doing and burst out laughing! “C’mon you!” Steve said and threw and arm around Jake’s shoulder, leading them out the door.

They both climbed into Steve’s car and headed off towards the restaurant, both too excited and nervous to be chatty. Once they arrived at 3200 Hadley Rd, Jake gazed out the window and saw the restaurant. “Oh Steve, it’s amazing! And expensive, are you sure?”, Jake hardly went out to McDonald’s let alone swanky places like this, he wasn’t used to it. “Dude, nothing is too good for us!” Steve replied, prompting Jake to agree, “You’re right! Tonight is about us!”. Jake and Steve parked the car and walked up towards the grand an elaborate doorway at the front of the restaurant. Steve held out an arm and Jake grasped it generously and the two marched into the restaurant, both as happy as they could be.

Adam pulled up to 3200 Hadley Rd. about ten minutes later and scanned around for any sign of Jake or Steve. He saw Steve’s nice car parked in the restaurant parking lot and pulled in, parking at the other end of the lot. He waited in his car for a bit, wondering how exactly he was going to go about this. His plan of action had to be precise and swift, he didn’t want to cause too big a scene. All Adam wanted to do was declare his undying love to Jake Saddler, so naturally there was no pressure. Adam decided to remain in the car and work out his plan, his nerves were starting to get to him and he needed to relax for a bit.

Meanwhile, Jake and Steve had talked to the front desk and confirmed their reservations. They were now seated at one of the nicest seats in the house, a window seat that gave a beautiful view of the city. They got their drinks and were now looking at the menu, whilst chatting and enjoying the moment. “This is so amazing Steve, I couldn’t have asked for more, just to be here with you, just us together, it’s perfect!”, Jake was flying on cloud nine, he always had such bad luck, but tonight his luck would not mess this up, or so he thought.

People in the restaurant were gawking and staring at Steve and Jake, obviously uncomfortable that two men were on a date together. Steve and Jake did not care however, all they cared about at the moment were each other and the amazing night they were sharing. The pair ordered their food, chatted about their life, flirted eagerly and enjoyed what seemed to be the perfect date. At the same time that the two were enjoying their night it was about to get a lot more interesting as Ashley Santos and her parents pulled up outside the restaurant.

Ashley and her parents frequently went out for classy dinners on the town, it was like a tradition that they shared a few nights a week. Tonight they decided to try this restaurant, as they heard that it provided a nice Hors D’oeuvre. They parked the car and walked up to the restaurant, going inside it’s grand doors. Adam watched them from his car, he knew that Ashley used to be Steve’s girlfriend, and had heard about the breakup. This was excellent, he could use Ashley to distract Steve then he could move in for the kill.

Steve and Jake were just finishing up the last of their dinner, when Steve paused and then remembered something he had for Jake. “Jake, I have something for you.!” Steve said to Jake, causing Jake to look alarmed. “Oh Steve, I didn’t know we were doing gifts! I didn’t….”. Steve stopped him, “I picked it up a while ago, don’t worry about it, I just want you to have it!”. Steve then reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box, which he handed to Jake. Jake took the box and eyed it with curiosity, he then proceeded to open it up carefully.

Suddenly Jake gasped, and looked like he was at a loss for words. It was his father’s watch, the one that the mugger had taken from him that one night as he walked home. “Steve…I….how did you…”, Jake couldn’t formulate a sentence, he thought he would never see this keepsake again. “Don’t mention it!” Steve grinned at Jake, who stood up, leaned over the table and gave Steve a warm embrace. “It’s amazing, thank you so much!” Jake was so grateful to have his watch back, and would be grateful to Steve for the rest of his life.

After much thanking from Jake and much reciprocation from Steve, they ordered dessert and continued their pleasant evening. Ashley and her parents were now sitting at their table and had a few elaborate trays of Hors D’oeuvres laid out in front of them. They were happily eating when suddenly Ashley looked over towards the tables near the window, and let out a sudden gasp. “Is everything alright honey?” Ashley’s parents asked her, “Yes everything is fine, this one just has an odd spice on it!”, her parents chuckled.

However, everything was not alright, Ashley was in horror as she saw Steve Roberts sitting with another guy. Had she been dumped for a guy? There was no way that Steve Roberts was gay, she could not believe her eyes. She watched as the two guys laughed and flirted, grazing each others hands and looking into each others eyes. She felt ill for a moment, then angry, then sad, and then spiteful and wicked. Yes, Steve was sitting over there with a guy, but he was confused and Ashley was going to set him straight.

Jake and Steve were sampling each others desserts, when Steve paused for a moment. “Jake will you excuse me, I just have to use the restroom”, Jake obliged and Steve politely got up and made his way towards the restrooms at the back of the restaurant. Ashley saw this as her cue, and once Steve had passed and was out of sight, she told her parents to excuse her and she made for the restrooms as well. Meanwhile Adam had entered the restaurant and was scanning for Jake and Steve’s table. With luck he spotted Jake sitting alone at a table near the window.

This could be Adam’s one and only opportunity to tell Jake how he felt, and it was a bonus that he was alone. Adam knew that he had to act now, or not at all, so he waited until the seating hostess wasn’t looking and then quietly slinked between the tables, making his way to wards a very elated Jake Saddler. Jake was in a love struck daze, the night was magical, everything that could go right had. He was thinking about Steve and looking at his fathers watch when suddenly he was awakened from his trance with a fright.

“Adam? What are you doing here!?” Jake cried out, realizing that his voice was slightly elevated, and then quieted down. “Jake, I need to talk to you right now about something really important!” Adam was shaking slightly, and was struggling with his nerves, Jake was totally flabbergasted. “Adam!? I’m on my date remember! Couldn’t this wait??”, Jake was just so shocked to see Adam he really didn’t know what to say. “No Jake, I’ve been putting this off for too long, I need to tell you…”, Adam was cut off, “Adam, Steve is going to be back any moment, please don’t mess this up!” Jake was frantic. “Jake Saddler I love you!”

Jake had just raised his glass and taken a sip of his water, when he suddenly choked and spit it out all over the table. Adam sat there watching Jake coughing and sputtering, as he tried to cope with the reality of what he had just said. Curious onlookers were gazing around from all sides of the restaurant, some scoffing and returning to their meals, some intrigued with the prospect of a “scene”. “You.. You what!?” Jake thought maybe he hadn’t heard Adam correctly. “I love you Jake, I always have!” Adam repeated again, causing Jake to her a sick feeling in his stomach.

“I don’t know what you are talking about but I am on a date right now, and you need to leave!”. Jake was starting to get slightly frustrated, Steve would be back any minute, everyone was staring and his perfect night was slowly going down the drain. “I’m not leaving until you tell me you love me too!” Adam protested, and he sat firmly In his seat, crossing his arms in front of him. Some of the onlookers seemed delighted, as if watching a soap opera, some were disgusted. Jake just collapsed, his head falling into his hands as he lay his head down on the table in mortification.

Steve had just finished using the washroom and walked up to the sink to wash his hands. He was thinking about the awesome night that they were having, and he couldn’t help but smile. There was on other man in the washroom drying his hands, Steve exchanged a smile with him and then the man exited, now Steve was all alone. Ashley waited outside the door to the men’s room, and smiled at the man who just exited the washroom. She then proceeded to look left and right and behind her, making sure the coast was clear.

Once she was sure, she crept into the men’s room letting the door close behind her with a slam. Steve was alarmed when he looked over and was face to face with Ashley Santos, the one person he did not want to see right now. “Hi Steve” Ashley crooned in a sultry and provocative manner, to which Steve seemed alarmed. Steve sized Ashley up, she had on one of her best and most revealing dresses, and it seemed to be dangerously tight. Although Ashley was small, she was noticeably curvaceous and used this to her advantage.

“Ashley this is the men’s room!”, Steve felt silly but it was the only thing that he could think of to say right now. “Steve…” Ashley was still using that sultry tone, “Did my eyes deceive me or did I see you here on a date with another guy?”. Steve was taken aback, but came clean. “Yes, I’m here on a date with Jake right now, so you better get out of here!”, Steve was doing his best to get rid of Ashley, but wasn’t working. “Steve, I don’t know what you’re doing wasting your time with little boys, when you’ve got a real woman right in front of you!”.

Ashley had a come hither look in her eye and she cocked her shoulder to the side, letting the strap of her dress fall off her shoulder. “Oops, silly me! I always did have a hard time keeping my clothes on around you Steve!”, Ashley chuckled and advanced on Steve, who backed away slowly. “Ashley stop it! Just get out of here, someone might come in!”. Ashley kept coming closer, she let her other strap fall off her shoulder and eyed Steve hungrily.

Steve continued to back up but stumbled as his back hit the wall, now there was nowhere for him to hide. Ashley pressed herself up against Steve who tried to look away, and spoke in a lurid whisper “C’mon Steve, nothing we haven’t done before!”. Steve tried to move left but she had him pinned and was surprisingly strong, “I don’t want to be with you anymore Ashley, just get off!”. Ashley just looked up at him and pounced, their lips met and she kissed him with such force that his eyes bolted open.

Steve had a million thoughts racing through his head at this one moment, he was gay, he loved Jake, he didn’t want to be with Ashley, but he couldn’t get free. He tried to resist but in the heat of the moment his instincts wouldn’t let him let go. Ashley was passionately making out with Steve who was returning her advances minimally, but with a faint distress. Suddenly Ashley was reaching for Steve’s belt and things were all happening so fast, Steve didn’t know what to do.

Jake looked up, people were still staring, some laughing, some watching intently, some looking disgusted. He had had enough, he couldn’t take it anymore, his date was ruined. “Adam! Thank you very much, this was supposed to be the perfect night, and you have now ruined it for me!”, Jake just stood up and stormed off towards the washrooms at the back of the store, followed by Adam, who was not giving up in his quest for Jake’s love. “Jake, come back here! We were meant to be together!”.

Jake was so upset, everything was ruined, and the night had been going so well. He thought that everything would end happily, with a walk along the street or some romantic kiss or something. Now he was faced with a situation that even he couldn’t foresee. Adam, his best friend was in love with him, he was trying to start a relationship with Steve, what was he going to do? Jake was just so upset that his unforgiving bad luck had not left him, and had struck again this very night.

As Jake made his way to the back of the restaurant, people were staring, and shuffling uncomfortably in their seats, no doubt because of Adam’s hollering coming from 40 feet behind him. Jake didn’t care anymore, he was tuning Adam’s voice out, and ignoring the stares, he just wanted to escape, if only temporarily. Jake knew that there was nothing else the could go wrong this evening, until he opened to door to the men’s washroom, and stopped dead in his tracks.

“Steve?” Jake cried out in anguish, prompting Steve to look up and Ashley to turn around. Jake just stood frozen there, taking everything in, Ashley was practically on top of Steve, passionately making out with him. He didn’t look like he was putting up too much of a fight, and Ashley’s hand was inside of Steve’s pants, just wonderful! Jake’s reaction quickly turned from surprise, to anger, he could understand Adam ruining the perfect night, but not Steve, everything was so perfect before, he though Steve loved him.

“Jake, it’s not what it looks like!” Steve cried out and then turned to Ashley, “Get off me!”. He threw Ashley to the side causing her to crash into a bathroom stall door, which opened leading Ashley to plop down onto the toilet inside. Steve zipped up his pants, and fixed his jacket, “Jake please you have to believe me, she just came on to me!”, Steve was desperate. “Oh spare me, I don’t care what happened here, but this date and us are so over!” Jake screamed. With that Jake took off out of the men’s room.

On his way out Jake crashed into Adam who had just come upon the scene looking for Jake. “Jake, what’s going on?” Adam saw how upset Jake looked. Jake just ploughed past him, not even saying a word, practically knocking him over. Adam was confused he didn’t know what was going on. Suddenly Steve burst our of the men’s room shouting “Jake! Come back here! Let me explain!”. Once Adam saw Steve, he felt his plan was threatened, and he stepped in front of Steve.

“What did you do to him?!” Adam demanded of Steve, as he blocked him from getting past. “I didn’t do any…..wait, what the hell? Get out of my way!” and Steve knocked Adam backwards and then chased off after Jake. Adam watched as Steve took off after Jake, and then heard the men’s room door open again. Ashley Santos ran out, in a commotion, “Steeeeeevve, Come back!!!”. She bumped into Adam on her way by, and he looked at her funny, “What is going on here Ashley?” Adam asked. “EWWW! Who the hell are you?” Ashley screamed and then blazed by him after Steve.

Adam looked puzzled for a moment and then took off after the other three. Jake burst out of the front doors of the restaurant and then took off down the side walk, looking clearly distressed to any passersby. With luck the bus was just around the corner and Jake quickly hurried to catch it. Steve burst out of the doors, frantically looking for Jake. He saw the bus and ran to catch Jake before he got on. Ashley burst out after Steve, whining as always and tripping in her heels, which had a trail of toilet paper trailing behind them. Adam burst out after, trying to catch up with everyone else and find out what was happening.

Jake boarded the bus and looked out the window to see Steve run up to the side of it. “Jake! Please just listen to meeee!”. Steve’s voice trailed off as the bus drove off and disappeared around the corner, Jake just ignored Steve. Steve quickly ran to his car in the parking lot to go after Jake, but found that Ashley had beat him to it. “Ashley just get out of my way, you’ve messed everything up!” Steve cried out and moved her aside to get to his car door.

“Steeeeeve, I still love you, take me back!” Ashley said in her most whiney tone ever, and then half tripped on the toilet paper and her heels, and fell into a puddle. Steve just ignored it and drove off in his car, out of the parking lot. Ashley got up, dress soiled with mud, hair frazzled and high heel broken. She just let out a loud high pitch scream and ran to her car to chase after Steve. She pushed Adam out of her way to get to her car, Adam had finally caught up to them. “What is going on!” Adam was still as confused as ever, but decided to go after Jake.

Adam headed to his car and left the parking lot after Ashley, following her down the street. Everything was now in full flight. Steve was chasing the bus that Jake was on down the street as it headed into Jake’s neighborhood. Ashley was in hot pursuit of Steve, still screaming her high pitched shriek, which was audible through her closed windows. Adam was following Ashley, hoping to find out was going on and be led to Jake, so he could get Jake’s response to his revelation.

The bus stopped at the stop beside Jake’s house and Jake got off and then headed towards his front door. Steve pulled up and his car went right onto the sidewalk, he didn’t care. He jumped out and started walking towards Jake. Ashley came screeching down the road next and then plowed into Jake’s mailbox, sending it flying. She stopped the car and jumped out, hobbling after Steve, trying to take off her broken heel at the same time. Adam pulled up to Jake’s house and actually parked with some decency, jumping out and walking into the commotion.

“Jake, please can we talk about this!” Steve was begging to Jake who went inside his house, not even closing the door. Steve followed him in, as did Ashley and Adam. “Steve I don’t want to hear it, I just don’t want to do this anymore!” Jake was so hurt by Steve, he didn’t want to even look at him. “Steeeeeeeve, why won’t you love me!” Ashley’s whining could be heard in the background, but no one was really paying attention. “Jake, I really love you man, please we have to be together!” Adam was saying as he tried to get near Jake.

“Back off Adam, why don’t you just get out of here!” Steve said to Adam as he turned to face him. “You don’t even know Jake, I do! I love him, you are just an ass!” Adam replied, there was tension between the two. “Excuuuuse me! I was talking to Steve!” Ashley interrupted, as she also turned to face Adam. “Okay! Everyone just needs to get out of here!” Jake shouted, as he was growing tired of all these antics. “Jake please give me another chance!” Steve pleaded, “No Jake! He’s a cheater, I would never do that to you!” Adam reassured Jake.

“Steve is mine anyways! Whoever you are, you can have Jake!” Ashley said to Adam, and then grabbed Steve’s arm. “Get off me Ashley, I don’t like you!” Steve reciprocated to Ashley, “Adam, we’re best friends but I’m not in love with you!” Jake said to Adam, causing Steve to give Adam an “I told you so” look. Adam then approached Steve, clearly trying to pick a fight, Steve returned Adam’s advance. Jake tried to get in between them, as Ashley pulled on Steve’s arm trying to get him for herself.

All this racket had awoken Mrs. Saddler who was asleep upstairs, she put on her robe and then headed downstairs, gasping at the scene she happened upon. She saw Jake, who was holding back two boys from fighting each other, one was Adam who she recognized and the other she didn’t know. There was also a whiny girl pulling on the arm of the boy that she didn’t know, she didn’t even know what was going on. “That’s ENOUGH!” Mrs. Saddler screamed, causing everyone to stop and look at her.

“Mom, I…” Jake didn’t know what to say, he didn’t really want to talk to her, as he was still really mad at her. “Jake what is going on, what is everyone doing here?” Mrs. Saddler was really confused and wondered why half the neighborhood was in her living room. “Mrs. Saddler I love your son, and I need him to know that!” Steve pleaded to her, in desperation. “WHAT? Jake, this is the boy isn’t it! Oh my god!” Mrs. Saddler was outraged and confused at the same time, she didn’t know what to make of this. “No, Mrs. Saddler! I love Jake, he should be with me!” Adam chimed in, equally as desperate, causing her to look utterly flabbergasted.

“Adam, don’t…” Jake tried to say, but Steve was back facing Adam who was now glaring at Steve again, Jake jumped in between them and Ashley started pulling on Steve’s arm again. Mrs. Saddler walked into the tussle trying to stop everything by shouting and commanding her authority. Apparently it wasn’t working, because all that could be heard was shouting. Everyone was shouting at the same time, all trying to make their point heard, but it all blended into one gigantic argument that was indecipherable.

Anyone happening upon this scene might find it amusingly comical, but for those involved it was a very stressful moment, Steve and Adam were grasping at each other, Jake was barley keeping them apart, Ashley was back to shrieking again and desperately pulling on Steve. Mrs. Saddler was appalled and just shouting at the top of her lungs “Stop! Stop! Stop!”, but nothing was happening, the commotion just ensued. Suddenly the loud ring of the doorbell echoed throughout the entranceway of Jake’s house, causing everyone to stop what they were doing.

Everyone stopped arguing, Steve released Adam’s shirt from his clutches, and turned to face the door. Adam let go of Steve’s arm and also turned to face the door. Mrs. Saddler gasped and covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes opening wide. Even Ashley’s incessant shriek had been quieted as she gazed at the doorway intently. Jake just stared at the doorway, mouth agape, and speechless, he was caught so unaware that the only words he could think of echoed through the now silent entranceway. “Dad…..?”.
