This being the 1,000th post, figured it warranted something a little more special with a little more meaning.

With Lefty's passing, a moment of reflection seems appropriate.

Beyond Memorial Day or even Veteran's day for that matter, let this be an ongoing place where we can come to share stories both first-hand and second-hand. To show honor, appreciation and respect to each of our respective militaries through words, music, pictures or anything. A place to list who in your life, as a member of the military, has impacted you personally. Whether we know it or not we are all affected directly or indirectly, and touched by someone in the military. Without these brave young men and women both active and retired or in reserve and those no longer with us, no one in the "free world" would be enjoying such relative peace and freedom without them. Regardless of your political view, your views on war, the view of the U.S. specifically, or the military in general, especially with respect to DADT...People in the military make huge sacrifices: not spending time with family, their spouse, children, in the end many make the ultimate selfless sacrifice with their very own lives. You don't have to name them, just who they are to you and where they are or were in the military. But They definitely deserve much respect and appreciation.

I will start this off with listing the people in my life who were or are members.
Growing up a military brat, many of my friends and family were members of various branches. Thinking back, I realize how much our military has impacted my life and how many people I have lost.

My grandfather (RIP)- Air Force
My father-Navy, retired
Uncle-Air Force, retired
Uncle-Army, retired
Cousin-Navy, retired
Former roommate\close buddy\fwb-Air Force, retired
Brother-in-law-Army, retired
Brother-in law's father-Air Force, retired
Ex-brother-in-law-Air Force, retired
Childhood friend-Army, retired
Childhood friend-Army, retired
Childhood friend-Army
Close friend-Airforce, retired
Buddy-Air Force
Friend-Air Force
Friend-Army
Friend (RIP)-Army
Friend (RIP)-Air Force
Friend (RIP)-Army
Friend (RIP)-Army
Friend (RIP)-Air Force

Though the dynamics of some relationships can be complex at best, these men in my life who have served and sacrificed will always have my respect and gratitude for protecting my life and defending my country. Thank You.

Re: The Military Appreciation Thread.

An appropriate and grateful thread recognizing Service.

My family traces its roots in this country to the Anne's landing at Plymouth in 1623.

Three more ships traveled to Plymouth soon after the Mayflower, including the Fortune (1621), the Anne and the Little James (both 1623). Passengers on these first four ships were called the "Old Comers" of Plymouth Colony, and were given special treatment in later colonial affairs.

My sister has the complete family history from then forward and it is replete with service to this country, the Union and the Confederacy. I thank them all.

Re: The Military Appreciation Thread.

Thank you to all who have served and sacrificed for our freedom. (*8*)

My friends, the straight couple I housekeep for, He's former Navy, and she's former Marine. Thing is, she's all of 5ft 6, and honestly doesn't look like much. ( I love telling this story...) But one day, while she's at work (she's a store manager for a beauty goods/cosmetics store) having a particularly rotten day... Now mind you, this store's location is in a not-so-nice neighborhood. So, one morning, when she was already having a bad day that day and running the store by herself until lunch, during the 11am hour, this big tall guy comes in, and goes behind the counter, where they keep their high-dollar merchandise. She's like, "Hey, what are you doing?" The guy shouts back, "I'm gonna cut you and take all the money!"

/facepalm... He shouldn't have done that. Oh, god damn, he shouldn't have done that.

With all that had went on that day, she'd already had a lot on her plate, and on her mind, and now this motherfucker was gonna try and rob the place. And that's when the Marine inside her just clicked. :)

Oh. Hell. No.

They keep some store-use utility scissors underneath the cash register. After the robber made his threat, the Marine inside fired right back, "Bitch, I'ma cut you!!!" as she rared back and threatened him with the store-use scissors. He actually wasn't expecting that, and it spooked him. He immediately ran out of the store, and she called the cops. When the cops got there and took her statement, she explained that she scared him off with a pair of scissors. The cops were like oO, and had this look of absolute perturbment on their faces. Then, she explained that she's ex-Marine. They're like, Oh...OK...

For like a month straight, her employees were scared of her, and scared to piss her off. Her boyfriend and I were so proud of her, though. She will cut a bitch!

The history nerd in me salivates with what a rich story your family history must have been, very cool.

What can I do except express my gratitude...

Thank you, lovelies!

Re: The Military Appreciation Thread.

I will forever be humbled by the bravery and sacrifice so many men and women have given so the rest of us would have a better world to live in. I salute and thank every one of them....past, present and future.

I especially want to salute the men and women who served in Vietnam. I was there at the end working to evacuate Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia...we helped as many people as we could get out and took them to an island in the Philippines. By the time I was out people had long since stopped spitting on the men and women who had served. My heart broke for those guys and the damage we did to them as a nation.
