On Topic Discussion The M.A.T. (Military Appreciation Thread)

Yesterday I pointed out Sailors awesomeness.... but for me it is not just Sailors... let me tell you a story of God's denizens of the Seas....

^Would have to agree there Mr. Birdman. excellent.

I have much love for all our military, the Navy however, has a special place in my heart though.
(in x-rays, it shows as a big, black, blotchy spot)

Submariners are a special breed (possibly in-bred), and quite sexy at that.

^(shameless)

What you guys do is truly insane (as Martha would say, a good thing).

Not only do you have my gratitude for doing your duty
You have my utmost respect for being a dolphin in the silent service.

Humbled. (ww)

I agree with this so much , i just would not be able to "hot-bed" with a guy that i thought was a dick , plus the thought of living , shitting , eating and working in what is really a tube of metal.........."shudders" , defo a special breed .

I can remember the first time I dove on a submarine.

A) It was just after the yards where several 20 foot by 20 foot holes had been cut in the hull then welded shut.
B) It was from the same pier that the Thresher and the Scorpion had departed from at the same shipyard. (Thresher and the Scorpion are on eternal patrol as the only US Nuclear submarines ever lost at sea)
C) I was green as hell and understood nothing about the boat.
D) After we dove because of a valve line up, salt water started pouring into my rack.....lol I shit a circle around myself.

Still I know what family is and I know who my brothers are... forevermore.

I started a thread about the VIRTUAL VIETNAM MEMORIAL WALL - you can follow the link, then click on a state, and look for your city, and see who died in service to this years-long effort.

THIS WILL, FOR MOST OF YOU, BE A LIST OF PEOPLE WHO LIVED ONE OR TWO GENERATIONS BEFORE YOUR GENERATION, as this [undeclared] war had already sown its initial seeds more than fifty years ago, and I believe that scattered deaths had already started.

This certainly can't be considered as CURRENT events...but it certainly involved politics, and warfare is a nasty job. For whatever reasons, whether or not the troops really knew the reasons for what they were doing (or, worse, those who were forcibly drafted and could not see any reason at all for this long nightmare), I have always had utmost admiration for Vietnam veterans.

Oh...I guess a link could be helpful. http://www.justusboys.com/forum/threads/404471-Very-interesting-website-VIETNAM-MEMORIAL-WALL-click-on-any-state-and-city-to-see-who-is-honored

Yep, like one poster said, all I can do is express my gratitude. While I may be gay and have/had my issues with Don't Ask, etc, that's never influenced the way I view the military. "The single greatest force for good in the world."

I find it interesting the way many gay people view the military. First of all, the military is not some monolith like people think it is. I have cousins serving in the army; there are many progressive people in the military (many gay people as well!). And whether someone is liberal or conservative makes no difference-- these are people who have given up their lives, spent time away from their family, made sacrifices most of us would scarcely even consider, to defend their country. Our country. I'm sorry, you can complain as much as you want about how the U.S. is intolerant, anti-gay, etc, but look around the world: there's nowhere else I'd rather be living as a gay man than the U.S./Canada/Western Europe/Australia. Yes, I've met some guys in the military who are homophobic, but what impresses me is that, while they may be homophobic, they put their lives on the line knowing full well that one of the liberties they're defending is our right to be gay. Something about that seems very selfless to me. We may not all agree with one another, but at the end of the day, we respect our mutual right to exist.

I didn't mean to approach the issue of military appreciation just from the point of gay-related issues, but I think there's a real disconnect between a lot of gays and the military. It's so wonderful to see a Military Appreciation Thread in a gay forum. It shouldn't be surprising, but it is.

PS: An uncle of mine died in Vietnam. frankfrank, I will be sure to check out the virtual memorial site. Thank you for that link!

Today is Flag Day and the the U.S. Army's 238th birthday.

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.[1] The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.
