I played on the porch of a house just like that as a kid, every time I visited my grandmother. We thought it was fantastic to be able to run all the way around the house on the porch!

It had a different kind of fence, though, and then a house got built across the lane.

At the house like that where I played when growing up, the parking was behind the house, so the lane was well-traveled. It got more gravel one yer because it had been designed for Model Ts and WWII-era cars were heavier and wore it down.
And the fence there was to keep neighborhood kids from just running across the yard.
