A lot of houses in rural Pennsylvania just like that. It looks a lot like my great grandfather’s place, Before the coal company forced him off the land and strip mined the whole township.I played on the porch of a house just like that as a kid, every time I visited my grandmother. We thought it was fantastic to be able to run all the way around the house on the porch!
It had a different kind of fence, though, and then a house got built across the lane.
Before Willis H. Carrier developed his air conditioner; many, if not most houses down here in North Texas had at least a dwelling wide front porch, if not one that wrapped around the sides. It probably also had a swing that hung by chains from the porch ceiling. The house windows were protected from the sun by that porch; and, allowed a cooling breeze to circulate into the interior. There was also, in all probability, an old fashioned, swamp cooler attached to one of the windows of either the Master Bedroom or the main living area.I played on the porch of a house just like that as a kid, every time I visited my grandmother.
