Mizanur Rahman the British hate preacher defended the Charlie Hebdo massacre could easily be considered evil.

Josef mengele, as far as i'm concerned. But anyone who tortures and kills, or orders such things are all on an equal footing really.

After Cormac mentioned Hitler and Stalin I thought of Pol Pot and Tomas de Torquemada, but I see that they too did get named.

I hope you are not including Queen Victoria among the very evil. She was largely a figurehead and the Empire was, in the balance, benign.
It is very strange that you admire Mao and Stalin, while demonizing Victoria. She would not be amused.

I was indeed including the late queen. Her pride of title was a vanity that was in part responsible for her allowing the government to ruthlessly exploit Indians by means of religious division and further class division that the Indians already labored under. Empress of India indeed, as if it needed yet another foreign raj.

It is not strange that I admire Mao and Stalin, as I clearly do not nor did I say so. For the record, less your spin, I stated that I marveled that they were able to propel their states into a modern industrial world after they had languished in the distant past for so long. To be sure, both despots have answered for the blood on their hands, and no tears are due them.

I wonder what it would look like if you could somehow quantify evil. Do these 1% most evil characters possess a wildly disproportionate share of evil in the same way that the 1% wealthiest people possess a disproportionate share of wealth?

My hunch is that evil is much more evenly distributed than riches. In that way, it may be more remarkable to talk about the average moral failure than the notorious one.

A figurehead can hardly count among the most evil, nor someome accused of "religious and class division". Beyond that i would point out that prior to British control India was ruled by alien Moguls or local monarchs of varying degrees of cruelty and exploitation. The British did not replace a democracy, and many acpects of British rule were an improvment. Ending the cremation alive of widows, for instance.

No, the Brits exploited the existing chaos and made it worse for selfish gain, just as they had many times before elsewhere. To cite a Sanskrit proverb, it is not goodness to be better than the worst. Factoid: the cremation of living widows had STILL not ended.

The same shame is due all the Western powers that likewise exploited China as she entered the 20th century.

And feel free to leave Victoria off your list. It is not required that morality or virtue be assessed equally between different men, nor is it expected in this thread. There are certainly even English members here who view all monarchs as evil.

Oooooo

It a minimum, the British brought order to the chaos. And you can hardly blame them for wife cremations since 1947.
