This movie was terrific, so terrific I bought the Blu ray and I only own about ten Blu ray discs. Usually if I really like the movie, I buy the dvd. Anyway, Colin Firth was amazing as the gay professor who lost his partner (not to AIDS thank god). Then, one of his gorgeous students starts to stalk him. Nicholas Hoult plays the student and you may know him from the hit British show Skins. Hoult looked amazing in this movie and he's naked a lot too! I didn't even recognize him as the gay character from Skins, as his hair was lighter and a bit longer. Hoult's baby blue eyes are amazing too. Julianne Moore was also great as Firth's neighbor and best friend. The share a great scene together dancing to Green Onions--the song. This is one of the few movies I watched that I DIDN'T want to end. Usually I am looking at the time remaining and swearing out loud because I still have an hour to go! It's been a long time since I enjoyed a movie this much.

CHECK this movie out, straight or gay, I think you'll enjoy it.

I would just like to say that Nicholas Hoult didn't play the gay character in Skins, Mitch Hewer did. Nicholas Hoult played the character of Tony. He got hit by a bus at the end of Season 1

I saw it in the theater too. My DVD arrived Monday.

When I saw it the theater was half full. It was an afternoon. The group was largely older...I'm guessing...straight couples. No one got up and left. I live in the southern US, I took it as a good sign that no one left.

I bought the book. It's a somewhat different story than the movie. I prefer the movie.

I don't know but the movie didn't do it for me. I can't quite lay my hand on what exactly I didn't like about it, normally I'm a sucker for those kind of movies (biographies, dramas, beautiful scenery, less words more emotions). It bored me and it made me feel uncomfortable. :shrugs:
Maybe I was too damn excited for it to finally arrive in the movies? I went there myself because I didn't know anyone who would want to watch it with me + all I need for these type of movies is myself and my tears ;) but the latter never showed up. It just didn't move me.

But I'm kind of glad others enjoyed it.

Corn-Sometimes it just depends upon your mood at the time. It's interesting that a couple of people mentioned they saw it in the theater alone. I go to movies by myself and rarely am I the only person by myself. I used to be a bit embarrassed to go alone, but now I couldn't care less. I saw Brokeback Mountain alone, and I loved it.

I think sometimes a movie just doesn't move you.

I loved a Single Man, but Brokeback Mtn didn't move me at for some reason.

Brokeback Mountain means so much to me, I think I have watched it almost ten times.

but you're right elly, I used to think it was weird to watch movies by myself. And I don't think I'd watch funny movies alone, but there's something about those drama movies that is so intimate that I don't mind going alone, or even prefer it.

Anyways, I think I'll give A Single Man another try soon, maybe it was simply my mood back then. (I do remember having to pee so badly through the whole movie lol. Something I will be prepared for the next time)

Certain good movies and certain excellent books are always worth a second look or read. I am amazed how much more I get out of a movie on viewing it a second time. I don't have adult ADD either...lol.

I watched it and frankly was left wanting. To tell you the truth I hate these types of Hollywood tales - the aging, average looking guy gets the cute coed and in this one he attracts two. Its like the fantasy of the old guy with little basis in reality. And what exactly was the meaning of it all?

There were pretty things to look at (the set design was sooo my taste) but I don't want to watch a movie of just pretty things.

Thomas Mann wrote a story with a similar theme, had Venice in the title. Think I'll find and reread it.

Hot White Trash: That book is Death in Venice. A great movie version was made with Dirk Bogarde.
Some people could find the film ponderous, but I just became enveloped by the beauty of it all. Performances are oustanding. I highly recommend it.

Yes, Death in Venice. I think Mann had it right - the older guy lusts after the younger, dangerously so, but never haves him. That is how life usually plays out.

If any of you do hunt down and view the movie Death in Venice I would be interested in hearing your reactions.

It was filmed in 1970 by director Luchino Visconti, and starred the late U.K. actor Dirk Bogarde (a gay man in real life). The young man was played by Bjorn Andresen. The movie was released in 1971.

It really is a masterpiece, and was voted the Grand Prize winner at the 25th anniversary Cannes Film Festival.

^I have read the book from which the film has been freely adapted. It is one of those rare cases where the film is superior to the book.

This film remains one of my all time favourites, as a dedication to the memory of one of Italy's greatest film directors. Visconti revived Dirk Bogarde's waning career with his earlier work "The Damned" (1969), that also has a gay theme worked into it, and then surpassed himself with "Death in Venice."

"Death in Venice" is available on You Tube.

A short dedication to the music, artisty, and sheer magical beauty that unfolds its wonder for all to appreciate:

Thankyou kallipolis for the You Tube offering.

It makes me want to view the movie again IMMEDIATELY.
